I don't know the exact number of shows Hole has done, but as a big fan of theirs who follows them as much as I can, I am still sure they have done fewer shows. First of all, they've canceled quite a few shows, including the dates they were scheduled to play at Lilith Fair, along with leaving their tour with Marilyn Manson after only nine dates. Also, their appearances, like Liz's, have been broken up quite a bit (considerable time off before each new string of dates), they didn't go out on the road nearly as early as Liz did and they've been off the road for a month now. Not to mention, it did take them a while to get their own tour set up after the Manson debacle. Hole have played many more countries than Liz has, but they haven't done extensive touring in most of them. They seemed mostly to play festivals, instead of their own shows. My guess is that they've probably done around 55-60 dates all told, which is still much less than Liz has played. Anyway, it's always good to see another Hole fan around here. :) Jase ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 10:11:34 -0400 From: "Wendy Alkins" Subject: Artist Support To Jase, who I assume is Jason, I was actually just trying to be nice & turn someone on to music I love, Ben Lee. My offer to tape was not meant to offend & I do see your point about supporting the artist. Personally, though, If I liked a tape, I would just spend the $ on the CD anyway, because the quality is that much better. Don't most people listen to CD's today?!? Anyway, your point was taken. Ben Lee's 1st CD "Grandpaw Would" & his newest "Breathing Tornadoes" are both great. He must've been depressed for his 2nd release, "Something To Remember Me By" because I found it depressing & don't listen to it. Maybe it was before he met Claire. He was first in a band called Noise Addict before going solo, but the CD is hard to find & the quality is poor. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 10:16:25 -0400 From: "Henry, Gregory" Subject: Patti Rothberg To the person who asked about Patti Rothberg, I think her record company went out of business and she was out of luck, so to speak. But she still gigs around NYC a bit. She also goes to a lot of shows. I've seen her at a Lori Carson show, a Juliana Hatfield solo show and the Blondie "secret" show at Tramps last year. Patti has a new song called "Suffocator of Dreams" that is so metal, so fabulous, you MUST hear it. I just wanted to extend a big "THANK YOU" to Jase for posting this URL - -- the article was absolutely fascinating, especially coming from Steve Albini. I really have the utmost respect for him, both as an Indie-Label supporter and as a producer -- some friends of mine released an album this spring which was produced by Albini (his cat is nicely pictured in the liner notes), and I think he did amazing work with it. [Albini also worked with another acquaintance of mine, who tells me stories of the secret doors in Albini's house....] In any case, I'd heard some stories about Albimi (as is always the case with so-called 'difficult' people, we hear only the rumors which portray them in a negative light) -- his loathing of Los Angeles, for example, and quotes such as the one below. But I really enjoyed reading this article -- Albini, of all people, would know about this sort of stuff in the industry. There is one thing I'm curious about: If Albini is SOOO opposed to major labels and the shit they put their artists through, why does he produce so many major-label artists? (I'm thinking, for example, of Nirvana, Bush, Page/Plant.... there are many others....) That is, if he is that opposed to the major-labels' raping their artists, why does he contribute to it? Catherine [who is trying very hard to resist making a horrible joke involving the name of Albini's band between Big Black and Shellac....] - -- "Anybody who thinks we overstepped the playground perimeter of lyrical decency (or that the public has a right to demand 'social responsibility' from a goddamn punk rock band) is a pure mental dolt, and should step forward and put his tongue up my ass." - Steve Albini ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 12:53:12 -0400 (EDT) From: "Nicole W." Well I was reading my Jane magazine from August, and it mentioned a cd called, like, Jane Ultimate Summer CD, which contains, among other things, Liz Phair, Luscious Jackson, Cibo Matto, uhh ouch my brain hurts from trying to remember the rest. Now the website is not very informative as far a stellign me which songs are on this cd, and i've emailed two different addresses and gotten both emails sent back to me as undeliverable. So I don't know... the details. Later, Nicole P.S. In my opinion, I don't think how famous a band is or how well they can sell their music determines the quality of the music. You may all disagree with me, and I don't really care. But Hole are not very good, musically. They may sell lots of records and have a large fanbase, but it's just a damn shame they can't play(or sing, for that matter) their instruments. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. It's quite possible Liz might turn up in both the documentary and on the CDs. Lilith Film in the Works Lilith Fair '99 may be the last lap for Sarah McLachlan's celebration of women in music and art, but the festival will have an afterlife. McLachlan says that, like its two predecessors, this year's Lilith will produce "one or two CDs" of performances recorded each night. "I'd like to release a CD on each artist on the tour, but it's impossible," she says. "You can't get record companies to cooperate with a venture like that." However, McLachlan promises that Lilith '99 will be documented in another medium — film. Canadian director Lynne Stopkewich, best known for the dark 1996 drama Kissed, is on the road with Lilith filming the onstage performances, the production set-up, and the backstage action. McLachlan says she's wanted to do a documentary since Lilith started in 1997 but was not able to get the project off the ground. "I wanted to document the behind-the-scenes of the village that moves," she says. "This whole traveling circus that we have and how it all works and all the people. I think it's important for people to see what's involved." McLachlan says she's given Stopkewich and her crew "full, free rein to catch the essence" of the festival. She adds that it's uncertain what form the Lilith documentary will be released in when it's finished, though ideally, she says, "I'd love it to go into proper theaters and film festivals and things like that." There's no targeted release date yet for either the album(s) or the film. — Gary Graff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 01:07:46 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Giveaway!
