Well, the first time I heard of Courtney Love was in relation to Kurt Cobain. I think a large part of her popularity has to do with him. Maybe she has proven herself talented and worthy of the popularity she has gained, but some of it DOES have to do with Kurt. There are a lot of talented people out there, but without the right connections and boosts, they never make it. All I'm saying is he was her boost. I was taking into consideration shows that they did anywhere, and despite the fact that Hole have played in many more countries than Liz has during the past year, they've still played far fewer shows. They have not played anywhere near the 74 that Liz has. The only thing where I was considering America solely was the double platinum sales figure. Its (A) quality and is on cassette. Due to some recent purchases (new computer, video recorder) im short on cash so I have to limite my trading. If you want to trade for this show, there are some rules you must note: 1. I will get back to everyone who emails me. 2. There will be an order to which I will except trades (People who have master copies will be first, people who have shows I want but dont have the masters will be second). 3. B&P's are undecided yet. I don't like to do them and I also don't like to sell tapes but if you insist on buying one, and because im short on cash and the damn concert cost me $116.00, It will probably cost you $5.00 which will include shipping. The people who want to buy will be dealt with last though if I have time and decide that I want too. Hope you all understand that so I can spread the wealth and if you have master copies, please make note of that at the top of the email and list which shows are masters so I dont have to guess. Better yet, type it in the subject box so that I know and i'll read your email first. As for the show, It was very good and I also got to meet Liz finally for the first time. Liz related news! :)! (Please forgive my typos). Since no one seems to be discussing Liz at Lilith, I just thought I'd share with you that Liz did sign stuff at the Tower Records tent again this year. At the Detroit show she played a great all-too-short set*, including 2 new songs, one of which she closed with, called "Love/Hate Transmission". Great song! :) I don't remember all of the songs, but some were: 6'1", Never Said, Supernova, Polyester Bride, ... I don't remember... She played a song I thought was Don't Apologize, it was a great song, but it sounds richer? more developed? than the Don't Apologize I recall from the college tour. Have any other Lilith-goers who heard it know anything about this? I know she said something before she sang it, but I couldn't understand her. (*=What's up with the really short set for Liz, anyway? She gets 30 minutes, Sheryl and Sarah get almost an hour. Why don't they break up the time evenly? I know normally the opening band does have a shorter set, and that Sarah and Sheryl are more *popular*, but if the purpose of this is to see a bunch of different artists and celebrate them ALL, then shouldn't they all get equal stage time?) The only thing with her signing was that there were two lines, one for people who bought CDs from Tower, and one for people who didn't. The Tower CD line went first. I was really disappointed by this - that Liz would do something like this. But when she got to the table, she was confused by the two lines, and the security guy explained to her - these people bought CDs, you have to see this line first - she said ok - but apparently she didn't know anything about it. That made me feel better. I asked her about the new album (which she made reference to during the set - - she said Love/Hate will be on the new album). She gave a big exasperated sigh, and said "I don't know *when* it will be out. It's not even finished yet." She sounded really frustrated/disappointed about it, so I didn't ask anything else about it. I drove 13 and a half hours, paid $34 for a ticket, $6 for parking, and $18~something for a CD I already own, but I'm happy, becasue I not only got to see Liz perform live, but I got to talk to Liz, too. It was definately worth it. I think it's great how friendly and polite she is with her fans. If she does ever top the charts, I hope that she doesn't change. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 16:54:27 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "lately, i'm into circuitry" Subject: Lilith "Phair" in Detroit Liz was just amazing! she did 6'1" Never Said Glory Don't Apologize Supernova Polyester Bride and a *new* song called Love/Hate Transmission (which was a fun, jumpy song......and liz jumped all over the stage) she was great! then she did an autograph signing at the Tower Booth........she was the only main stage act to do that....... it was a great day! in liz love trent. The concerts are much more intimate this way, and I know that Im more important as a fan when I'm one of few, as opposed to one of many. For example, my first favorite band is Pearl Jam, and I dont' feel important at all in their career. And I've seen them four times: half of those shows were spent watchinga screen becasue I wa so far away from the stage that I couldn't see the band. It would have been 3 shows that I spent like that, but I convinced a security guy at Deer Creek (take note, if you're seeign Liz at Lilith at DC) to let me into the Pavilion area. I gues this is kind of selfish. But also, I dont want people like my sister listening to Liz. I came in here to get the computer from her, and she was listenin ot country music. Earlier, my bro had the tv on, and britney spears was on, and he was yeling for my sister to come in there, because apparently she would have wanted to see ms. fake boobs herself on tv. Because she likes her or something. So I don't want this crowd to be listenin to Liz. It's an insult, not a complement. And I found out the country my sis was listening to was the dixie chicks, and my humble opinion is that they suck, just like all other country (or neo country. The article is actually about both Courtney Love and Liz, and Sandy Carter, the author, makes a lot of good points about each, including the following about Courtney: Those who have dismissed Love as an opportunist plotting pop stardom on the coattails of her famous husband should consider the market potential of selling female pain to a public with no stomach for bratty women who don't know their place. Live Through This is not going to crack MTV or commercial radio, but it is blood on the tracks and one of the great records of 1994. The article is definitely worth a read, and you can find it on the web at . Wendy Alkins wrote: >Anyway, people don't moan about XTC not touring because they know that >Andy Partridge admits to having severe anxiety over performing live so he >just doesn't do it, period...... Well, yes, this is true; there were a lot of other examples I could have used, though, but XTC was the first to come to mind. Others might have been Kate Bush or Joni Mitchell, who admittedly did play some shows with Bob Dylan last year, but before that hadn't toured in well over a decade. Even R.E.M. didn't tour for a while, either. My point was that we should feel lucky that Liz does tour as much as she does, instead of complaining that she doesn't tour enough. Much like Andy Partridge has his reasons for not touring, Liz has several valid ones of her own she could use. The fact is, while she is over her stage fright and seems to enjoy performing now, she probably doesn't enjoy everything else that's involved with being able to get up on stage for that hour-and-a-half each night. The problem is that a lot of people probably look at touring as being something glamourous, but really it's very grueling and a lot of work, and if you asked most performers, they would likely tell you as much. It's not that they don't appreciate the fact that they have loyal fans that do want to see them live, but all of the traveling, waking up in a different city each day, and being away from their friends and families for long periods of time does take a toll. It's a very isolating thing. It's no wonder to me why Liz doesn't go out on the road for more than a few weeks at a time, then takes such lengthy breaks. It's likely quite hard for her to be away from her husband and son, not to mention the rest of her family who she seems really close to, for any longer than absolutely necessary. I imagine it's probably somewhat frustrating for them as well, particularly Liz's husband. I just couldn't imagine it not taking some kind of toll; it'd be a hard thing to get used to. And the thing is, if Liz did have to choose at any point between her marriage or touring, I have no doubt she'd give up the latter without hesitation. Liz's family seem to mean more to her than anything else. I do feel bad for those who want to see her, but haven't been able to, especially those who actually held tickets only to have her cancel. At the same time, I'm trying to see how things may be for Liz, and I consider myself extremely lucky to have seen her as many times as I have. Not all bands tour, and she has more reason not to than most. >To the person who is interested in Ben Lee (Pop Queen), I am happy to tape >the CD for you. Just send me a tape. No offense, Wendy, but why would you tape a commercially available release for someone? The artist, producer and songwriters don't see any royalties this way. If you really love an artist, you will support them and make sure they receive what they are entitled to, rather than rip them off. That said, I do believe in taping a few songs for someone on mix tapes or such to introduce people to artists they might not hear otherwise in the name of exposure, but when this person is already interested in purchasing an album and knows the artist, it's just wrong. Taping a few songs as an introduction is cool, that way people can decide if they want to purchase something from the artist or not. It may actually end up helping the artist's sales. Taping full albums just so people don't have to buy them is not cool, it just screws the artist over. By the way, a lot of people probably think by now that I'm a complete bastard about this stuff. If that's the case, here's a URL to an article by Steve Albini that you all should read. It explains how a band can be on a major label, have sold 250,000 copies of an album, made their label a lot of money, yet are in the hole themselves. It's pretty scary, and I believe more music fans need to know exactly how the industry operates. I think most casual fans believe that once an artist is signed, they've automatically got it made; that's really not the case. Anyway, check the article out at . It's an eye-opener. Pat wrote: >I know (well, I think) that you're only talking about the >late-1998 shows which she cancelled, but, given her history of booking >dates and then playing only a selected few, honestly, yeah, I'll blame >her. Her history of booking dates and then playing only a selected few? Well, I don't recall Liz canceling any dates on the solo electric tour in '95, and while she did cancel a tour for _Whip-Smart_ the previous fall, anyone who's done their reading will know that Liz was in no condition to tour at that point. Remember, Liz initially didn't set out to make music as a career and she never imagined being so successful (in one interview, she even said that she only expected _Exile_ to sell 1,500 copies, which she would have deemed a great success). She obviously didn't anticipate her music catching on with so many people, and she wasn't prepared for all that came with it. She also recounts in several interviews how wiped out she was at the end of the summer of '94, after doing so much press for _Whip-Smart_. She still wasn't used to all of the scrutiny and all of the pressure that had been placed on her (expectations for _Whip_ were quite high). There was already tension between her and Brad Wood, and she was feeling really fragile at that time (not exactly a state one would normally associate with Liz, so you know things definitely weren't good). All in all, not a happy time for her. Going out on the road would have made things that much worse. Before _Whip_, Liz didn't do that much touring, and although she had severe stage fright, I don't recall her canceling too many shows. Her history of canceling may not be that great, but it's still better than many think. Ginz wrote: >Ah, but whatever you do, don't miss Aimee's first album 'Whatever'. >Everyone....run, don't walk...to the store and buy this album. I read something recently about episodes of the show being released on video. Search Amazon (if you dare). I'm sure they've got it there. Also, in the same vein as Your Friend and Neighbors lies Happinesss, directed by the Todd Solondz. I think somebody mentioned Welcome to the Dollhouse, which was his other movie. I found Eyes Wide Shut mildly disturbing as well. But bar none, the most disturbing movie I've ever seen is Titanic. Not because of the movie itself, but the reception. Hello. > Has anybody heard anything from or about Patti > Rothberg(Between the 1 and > the 9, 1995)? Nope. But I got the chance to see her perform a couple of years ago. A highly enjoyable show. She was opening for that band that played that song "Stuck on an Island Inside a Phone Booth in Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again." or something like that. I let my father borrow Exile this weekend. He made some remark about "her language." Oh well. d. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? POWER >TO THE PEOPLE!!! GO PICK UP A GUITAR!!! This is one thing that concerns me as well. For an artist or band to start their own label, that has got to be very time-consuming, then for them to work at actually getting their music out to the public and promoting it.... Sure, the rewards may be greater for the artist financially, but it must mean some sacrifice of not only personal time but creative time as well -- time that would normally be spent writing and recording new material. Still, for most, it's probably worth it, just to have complete artistic control and to see some reward for their efforts. In light of the Universal/PolyGram merger, maybe I'm a little more cynical than I should be about the music industry, but it seems like it's just getting harder and harder for serious artists to get anywhere and to build an audience. Everything seems to be about nothing more than making money these days. In the past, the major labels seemed to have been a little better about all of this. They would allow "cult"-ish acts to co-exist with superstar ones, and use the money the big names would bring in to subsidize their less accessible acts. You wouldn't see nearly as many bands getting dropped after just one record. I know it's not like the music industry hasn't always been profit-driven, but it seems to be even more so now and there just doesn't seem to be enough room for both art and commerce. These labels should take a few gambles now and then, though -- they might find it pays off. I think they grossly underestimate the public's intelligence and what people really want to hear. Is it just me who feels this way? I guess there is the tendency to romanticize the past, and maybe the reason why I'm so down about the state of things right now is because so few of the artists I like stand a chance in the current marketplace. I am really anxious to see what happens in the future with MP3s and artists starting their own labels, though. It may be really optimistic of me, but I do hope it will create a revolution in how music is marketed and sold and maybe it will finally cause the majors to change both how they do business and how they treat their artists. I will say that one thing I like the most about this list is that we're all able to share music recommendations with each other and a lot of us have similar tastes. I've picked up on so much great music that I might not have come to know otherwise because of posts people have made here. To me, that's a great thing.
