I love Liz more than anybody, but she has to do what she said >she would do. TOUR! First of all, Liz did not cancel her tour three times. She did, however, cancel several dates at various times, but that was because they were booked without her knowledge by her agent. Sure, she could have been a good sport and played those shows anyway, but seeing how much work she put into promoting the album, who can blame her for not wanting to spend even more time on the road, away from her husband and son? Liz has done an incredible amount of touring in support of WCSE; much more than for her previous two albums combined. She did well over a dozen Lilith Fair dates last summer, toured on her own throughout the fall, spent a month opening shows for Alanis at the start of the year, then launched her college tour in the spring and is now doing Lilith Fair again this summer. And you're saying "TOUR"? She has! Also, the notion that touring is going to bring in a lot of new fans is pretty much bullshit to some extent. Sure, it does generate some print, and in the case of opening for a more well-known artist or being on a tour like Lilith, it helps bring exposure to people who might not otherwise know her work, but on her own tours, she's pretty much just playing for her established fanbase. Most of the shows sell out so quickly to fans anxious to get tickets that there aren't any left for curiosity seekers looking for something to do that night who might decide to check her out. Besides, lots of bands sell a lot of records without doing much touring. Case in point: Hole. _Celebrity Skin_ is nearing double platinum in sales, and they've played far fewer shows over the past year than Liz has. Also, there are artists who play a lot more shows than Liz does and still sell fewer records. Touring isn't everything. Secondly, Capitol hasn't really done that much for Liz. Posters and promotional 7-inches? Almost all bands get at least that much promotion from their labels, even bands that sell a lot less than Liz does. Take a look around eBay sometime and you can find an incredible amount of these items by even relatively obscure bands. Most bands don't get a second single these days? Where have you been? Again, bullshit. XTC have already had two from their latest album, Jen Trynin had two from _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_, Aimee Mann had two or three off of _I'm With Stupid_ (depending on if you want to count "That's Just What You Are" or not, since it had been released as a single long before the album was released), Elliott Smith had at least two (that I know of) off of _XO_. And these are all artists who don't sell nearly as many records as Liz does. If you look at artists who sell more, such as Garbage, Hole or Beck, they see three or four singles released off of each album. Truthfully, Capitol has done relatively little for Liz. I've almost seen more promotion for Sleater-Kinney's _The Hot Rock_, and consider the irony there, since they record for a label called Kill Rock Stars! I mean, like, Liz was such a low priority at Capitol, they delayed the release of WCSE for two months so they could put out the Beastie Boy's _Hello Nasty_ first, a record that would have done well no matter when it was released and a move that screwed Liz over. Had WCSE been out in June instead of August last summer, Liz might have been able to capitalize on her Lilith appearances more. Also, Capitol didn't even seem to give a damn about making already impatient fans wait even longer when the album was already finished and ready to be released. Liz did several TV appearances in support of the album, gave countless interviews, and played more shows than at any other time in her career. All of these were things she did herself, or set up with the help of her management and booking agent. Somehow a bunch of posters and 7-inches don't seem like much effort on Capitol's behalf in comparison. It's no wonder why Aimee Mann is now starting her own label to release her recordings. It seems to me that a lot of artists can do a much better job promoting themselves than the labels they are signed to. Hell, it was cold! Go see eclipses if you can, but be sure to be in the 100%-zone (otherwise, they do indeed get dull). On the subject of scary movies (and BWP): 1) Has anyone seen "Man Bites Dog"? It's a Belgian movie, originally titled "C'est arivee pres de chez vous". Though I haven't seen BWP, I think there's a resemblance. In "Man Bites Dog", you're to go along with a camera team that has agreed to follow a serial killer in his "daily doings". The whole thing is filmed as original footage: the serial killer talks to the camera and the other members of the team. They're with him and watching as he breaks into people's houses and kills them. Eventually they get involved. It's very scary, because you get to sympathise with the crew, even with the killer. 2) Twin Peaks... anybody else believe that the "Little Man From Another Place" is actually the ghost of Elvis? It is unbelievably close to the 'Phairities' compilation I put together, except since this person has put it onto CD, they've left off a few songs (the Ashtray Boy and Ben Lee songs that Liz sang on) and added a "remix" of "Headache," which is probably just an older version from the '96 Shelved Demos tape or the WCSE Sessions CDs. No one has asked me if it would be alright if they sold this, and I wouldn't give permission anyway. Trading such items is cool, but selling them and ripping off other fans is not. Honestly, I don't care if this person is on the list or not -- I say report them. I'm going to myself anyway. If anyone really wants to hear all of this material, just ask on the list and I'm sure someone will be more than happy to make a copy of 'Phairities' for you. I'd offer to do so myself, but I really can't take on anything further until after I move. And before you all start thinking I'm a bastard, I will try to post something with a little less negativity soon. I guess everyone knows by now what my pet peeves are, though: the sale of bootlegs and seeing artists get screwed over by their labels. (Wow, I just dropped my joint and almost burnt the desk. Shit.) I dont want Liz, my girl, my fragile cute girl, buckleing under the pressure... but then again i underestimate her strength. Maybe she can handle mainstream and become a familiar name who contiunes to put out great music (like my man Tom Petty-- there are other Petty fans out there...) and become a part of musical history.
