I myself had just recently surrendered a hefty chunk of change to a young woman of vertical hair and heavy makeup, a capable gameswoman who consistently had the ability to edge me out by the slimmest of margins in that game of chance they call blackjack. Fueled by red wine and gin I slowly began to wind my way through the casino. My pockets were lighter, but I felt good. It's Vegas after all, I mused to myself. Drifting about with a slightly silly grin I began to take in my surroundings. Lining the walls of the Hard Rock Casino were artifacts from times past and present, the toys and memories of legends, gods, and here and there, a monster; markers of dreams fulfilled, and, fleeting for some, now gone. Crowds lined the outer walls, anxiously awaiting entrance to a small club where a band known as the Flaming Lips was soon to entertain both young and old. Working my way through the crowd I found myself jammed against a large wooden pillar. As I shuffled around the obstacle I turned to notice a small gold plate that said simply, Liz Phair. As my gaze began to drift above, my field of view was overtaken by a vision in black and white, a six stringed marvel graciously donated by the Phair one herself. Liz Phair's guitar I said with glassy eyed wonder. With a life its own my hand drifted over the body, my fingers gliding over the strings that once she played, picking at patterns that were once perhaps her own. The din of noise rising from the casino floor faded out and I found myself in a strange loop of my own, oblivious to everything but the moment. From nowhere a meaty paw came to rest heavily on my shoulder. The strange words this man spoke began to make themselves clear. "Don't touch that." Gutteral noises invading my private moment. Alas, in a small moment of wisdom (to be shortlived) I conceded this victory to the man of excessive testosterone. With newfound vigor I was off to report this grand find to my comrades in excess. I would let the fountains of gin and bourbon flow once more. I would seek out my high-haired, masked mistress and retake what had been lost... Sadly, my friends weren't as terribly excited as I was about my find so I share it with you, my fellow Lizsters. I would go on that night to basically lose my ass and drink myself stupid. But that's okay, cause it's Vegas, baby... If ever you find yourself amidst the madness, I highly recommend the Hard Rock and the Rio (check out the Voodoo Lounge, top floor). I am happy to be alive and sad that I didn't take a picture of Liz's guitar at the Hard Rock (frown). For all who have enjoyed Liz's CK ad, there are also postcards that feature a better shot in a different outfit. If you want to see it, some guy on ebay is selling them. I'm betting that you can probably get them at a department store or something so I'm going to check it out. If I can get a hold of several I'll be sure to offer them up to the list. I'm crossing my fingers for a pre-Christmas release on Liz's new album, but not counting on it. Who knows, though. If the recording is done, there's plenty of time to take care of mixing and such for a nice November release. Here's hoping. I think Liz will do quite well as a Capitol artist. To all those who are screaming for a mainstream accepted Liz I know you mean well, but take it from someone who has lost bands to the main, it's just not the same. Just keep spreading the word to your friends and neighbors and all will be well. To all those who've been discussing Aimee Mann over the last week or so, I thank you. To me she was always "that girl from Til Tuesday," but I went out and got "I'm With Stupid" the other day and I'm hooked. Can't wait for the new album. I suppose I've rambled here long enough. I must get packing. It's off to NC for a wonderful weekend of holy matrimony (suckers!). I can't believe the "rude remarks" Vince Lombardi (or whatever his first name is) made about Liz! It's bollocks! If he's going to be a prick, he should think about what he's saying. It's not Liz's fault that Matador joined with Capitol, and it's Gary Gersh's fault that WCSE turned out relatively clean and commercial sounding (for proof, see Ken's CDs). As far as I can tell, especially from her new material, Liz isn't on a commercial, slick journey or whatever he called it. If you write music, don't you always just write what you are able to write? It seems like some songwriters are incapable of writing pop music, and correct me if I'm wrong, but Liz doesn't seem to be Alanis or the Spice Girls or anything like that. In response to Dermich's comments about Liz on the telly... I agree. I hate to say it, but I think she is a wee bit camera shy. I mean we must give mad props to Liz for overcoming hte stage fright thing... i don't expect her to wipe out all fears in one fell swoop. I think it's kind of cute, actually, how she's so camera shy, but I realize if I wasn't already a fan, I'd be liek "who's this hokey chick on the screen?" Hmm what else is there? I don't remember. I really wanted to see Les Miserables while I was in London, but i don't think I will. I hate musicals and live theatre in general,b ut I am a sucker for Les Miz. I love Eponine. Anyway that isn't why I an't believe they're engaged. It's just that Ms Danes is only like... a few months older than me. And also I used to IDOLIZE her. I dunno. And didn't she JUST learn to drive? The Underground is on the local cable channel (channel 3 for those of you who are with Charter in Long Beach) which plays the best videos around. It is only an hour long and comes on every Sunday at 10 p.m. I've seeing videos from Sleater-Kinney, Pavement, Atari Teenage Riot, Belle and Sebastian, Cornershop, Sebadoh, Long Beach Dub Allstars, the Dandy Warhols, X, Bob Marley, and just basically really cool artists that we never see on that god-awful shit of a program known as MTV (but 120 minutes is cool but its on too late for me to watch it).
