WB Records Die, damn you, die!! No doubt, that's what many people would like to say to the decade known as the 1980s. Bad hair, bad clothes, bad presidents, and of course, lots of bad music. But there was also lots of great music, especially coming from female-led new wave bands. These bands have reunited (or even continued) in the 1990s with, predictably, mixed results. The B-52's launched a summer-long tour last year in support of a greatest hits album with a fabulous new song, "Debbie" (in honor of Blondie leader Debbie Harry). The newly reunited Blondie, unfortunately, did not live up to the challenge, releasing a thoroughly awful new album this year. The Go-Go's reunited (again) just last month. Then there are the Pretenders, who have trudged along since 1980, and who just recently released their seventh album, Viva El Amor! Only two members remain from the original lineup of the early '80s: leader and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde and drummer Martin Chambers. Guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon both tragically died of drug overdoses in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Since then, Hynde and Chambers have continued on for sixteen years with various musicians. Here's the good news about the album: it doesn't suck. In fact, it's pretty darn good for a band that's been inconsistent for the last 15 years or so. Hynde certainly hasn't lost her touch for writing beautiful pop hooks. And they're out in full force on this album. Take, for example, the ringing "Popstar," "Who's Who," and the gentle closer, "Biker." Thankfully, she also hasn't forgotten how to rock-"Nails in the Road," "Dragway 42, " and "Legalise Me" all bristle with the attitude and energy that has made Hynde a mother figure to almost all female rockers of the '90s. On the downside, the cover art (a photo of Hynde gazing skyward with a clenched fist extended) and album title are pretty lame. A few sappy ballads drag down the pace of the album. Lyrically, Hynde has only gotten mellower with age, writing more and more about love and relationships. And while it's not fair to fault her for this, it does make one yearn for the sexually charged, biting lyrics of the band's first album. Gone are the days when Hynde said, "I shot my mouth off/and you showed me what that hole was for!" Viva El Amor! stands as another solid collection of songs from the mighty pen of Chrissie Hynde. And while it's obviously not as good as the group's sublime first album (truly one of the best debuts in rock history), it is certainly a worthy addition to any Pretenders fan's collection (or anyone who wants to know from where Alanis Morrisette got her lousy shtick). - ---- Vasant - ----- LOUDER THAN BOMBS: the very best in punk, post-punk, and indie rock Saturdays, 4-5 pm. It's been a while since I've had anything to post, and, well, I still don't really have anything to post so I'll just ramble about some of the current topics at hand. I haven't had a chance to see Blair Witch yet but I did catch Eyes Wide Shut over the weekend. I kind of fall two ways on this one. First off I thought it was visually a fantastic film. The gritty element, the moods reflected in the lighting, the camera work...it just looked great! However... the film was lacking and just almost absurd at some points. First, Tom's acting...bad, bad, bad, bad. All I could think about while watching him was Days of Thunder. Dr. Trickle anyone? I thought Nicole did a good job, but she was underused (although I think she might have overdone the dope smoking scene a bit...or it was just really good pot...and how did she get drunk so quick at the party?). Onward...That scene with the guys hassling the good Dr. mistaking him as gay was just ridiculous. I mean seriously, guy in expensive suit IN THE VILLAGE in NEW YORK CITY? Come on... Maybe in Idaho. Also the scene where the hooker's roomate tells Dr. Trickle that his little friend has...hold on kids....AIDS!!!! If Stan was going for shock he was about 15 years too late. Hooker with AIDS...go figure. I just think Stan was trying to make a bold film that just wasn't that bold in 1999. I've seen the same mature look at sexuality on Cinemax. This one was just prettier to look at. Speaking of pretty pictures, though, I really dig the new Liz CK ad (liz content!). I just like that lighting and Liz has that natural thing goin' on. I felt really cool buying my Glamour, too. Anyway, while I'm here...does anyone have the lyrics to Don't Apologize? I know someone posted them a while back, but that was before I had a copy of the song. I will be crushed if this one doesn't make it onto the next album. Also, I am in dire need of girlysounds (good copies). Anyone wishing to help a soul out please email. I've got a couple of tapes that I can bargain with. Tapes are cool, but if anyone would like to burn CDs, you'd be my superstar. Lastly, first exposure: EIG. Current fave: EIG. Nothing will ever beat that chill I got the first time I heard Never Said.
