There's been a lot of talk about the changes in Liz's sound throughout her career, with emphasis on WCSE. Does anyone know if Liz really wanted the album to sound all techno? Or did the record company urge her into this direction? I remember reading in my friend's Spin a Liz article about how Matador wasnt happy with her first attempt at WCSE. (Which is pretty common knowledge now.) Maybe Liz isn't too happy with her new sound either, but had to bow to the media gods. I also remember in the early nineties hearing all this talk about how techno and electronica were gonna take over the States, which it had already done in Europe. Each year MTV's Year in Rock would lament how the invasion hasn't happened yet, but it's gonna, really. It is. So maybe the record companies got tired of waiting for the American tastes to change, and decided to change them for us. Well, there's a theory for ya. Hope this sparks some discussion, because the digests have been lacking lately. On a more egotistical note, I've made a couple Liz skins for the obligatory MP3 players out there. If anyone wants 'em, just drop a line. They're decent if nothing more. - --Malmuud NP: "Turn it Up" Treacherous Three ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 23:16:21 PDT From: "M.L. But, anyway, since everyone else is busy plugging their favorite singers, might I name one of mine? Anyway, Lucinda Williams' CD Car Wheels On a Gravel Road was the best album that came out last year, in my humble opinion. I don't know how the Lilith Fair people snubbed her. Anyone out there that likes to hear country-rock-folk stuff should go out and buy this CD immediately. Her lyrical writing is top rate. With lines like: "You can't depend on anything really, there's no promises, there's no point/ There's no good there's no bad in this dirty little joint/ No dope smoking, no beer sold after 12 o'clock/ Rosedale, Mississippi, Magic City Jukejoint/ Mr. Johnson sings in a corner by the bar/ Sold his soul to the devil so he could play guitar/ He's too cool to be forgotten, hey hey", sung in a twang that crosses Loretta Lynn with Janis Joplin, absolutely a modern day classic. Check it out at http://www.stormloader.com/pecf/blair.html by the way, the actual film is really frightening. yet there's hardly a drop of blood spilt, just terrific suspense. you want to visit the official site at www.blairwitch.com before you see the film if you can. the website gives nothing away, while it sets you up with a pre-text which only adds to the theatre experience. and the winner is: whoever emails me first and second. and the prize is: Phairities (two-disc set) and the reason is: i just thought that a contest might make amends for the shocking dearth of Liz-content in this message. It starts in Fort Lauderdale! Enjoy! > Yes, bay-bee! That's me. I'm there! I have my tickets. I'm ready! I'm primed. Well, I saw Eyes Wide Shut Friday. Sorry, if I don't agree with the masses. I love independent and for lack of a better term, alternative-type movies. This one just didn't do it for me. And what's worse, in my mind, than something like Lake Placid - which obviously doesn't pretend to be more than it is, I think EWS is full of that kind of pitfall. There is hardly the kind of sexual behavior, mores, etc. that would have given this movie more depth to me. It seemed VERY surface to me, and when I looked under that, I saw nothing. The party scenes were droll and dull (once again to me, I wouldn't speak for everyone) and I found the last monologue, even with that last line way too hit-you-over-the-head with the point. I liked Nicole's early monologue and Leelee Sobieski just glowed on the screen. Otherwise, major thumbs-down from me. I would rather have spent three hours cleaning my house - and i HATE to do that. I wish I had my money back. Anyway, I have my spaceegg demos (Thanks, Jolie!) I love them. It's like having another new Liz album. I love the alternate tracks and the ones I didn't know. And I love Russian Girl more than ever! I also like the other running order. But I still love WCSE too. Any and all Liz is good with me, apparently. Maybe I would have liked EWS with her in it... That's all from me. paige= NP: Cree Summer-Street Faerie _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
