Oh. You want justification? Yeah, some people like to back opinions up. The acting was well done (once you get your suspension of disbelief going about Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman playing a married couple. Totally unrealistic.), look at the scenes where they're drunk or stoned or when Dr. Harford is about to piss his pants. I don't know anything about directing, so I won't comment on that. But it is Kubrick, and there are some tedious (sur)reality scenes. It was hilarious some of the time (it being a serious movie, that's a good amount). What the hell is a Dillions? "Fuck." Her name is Diane Izzo and her debut album is called "One", put out by Sugar Free Records. She is early Liz-like with her throaty vocals, but more people seem to think she is something of a cross between PJ Harvey and Bob Dylan. She has a great folk/punk sound and her lyrics are wonderfully dark and complex - lots of Catholic imagery. The Brad Wood production is evident - the album has that "close to the microphone sound" that spotlights her unusual voice. My favorite songs on the album are "Wicked Spell", a totally rocking tune, and "Horse of Diana", a gorgeous ballad. I have seen her twice now, once in a Starbucks where she was playing solo for free, and since she was nice enough to hand out tickets to her upcoming show, I saw her again on Saturday night with her full band. The two experiences were vastly different. She was the quintessential folk singer at Starbucks, while on Saturday she was in rock queen mode with glitter on her face. Please take a listen to the album (I believe you can hear samples from it on cdnow.com or tunes.com) and let me know what you think! Following is an article that quotes Brad Wood: Like it or not Diane Izzo's debut transcends comparisons, so far By Allison Stewart "Either you like it or you don't, is what I've been hearing," says Brad Wood of advance reaction to "One," the soon-to-be-released debut outing from local singer-songwriter Diane Izzo, which he produced. "Most people like it, fortunately." "One" has earned Izzo comparisons to everyone from Liz Phair to, most frequently, P.J. Harvey. "It's not bad or good," Izzo says of the comparisons. "I don't listen to a lot of her music, so she doesn't have much to do with my content, at least." To Wood, Izzo's carefully constructed, guitar-and-mandolin-heavy songs suggest a far different influence. "I never really [told Diane] this, because you don't want to tell someone their influences are showing, but I hear a sort of classic, Dylan-style folk in her music, and her vocal stylings are similar," Wood says. "I've never heard a woman sing that way." Izzo, who says she taught herself to play guitar from a Burl Ives songbook she checked out of the library, went through the expected period of struggle and strife before signing to local label Sugar Free (home of Chris Mills) on the strength of an unsolicited demo tape. Wood came on board after attending one of Izzo's residency shows at Schubas, and advance word has been snowballing ever since. This week, Izzo goes to New York's CMJ record industry conference to try to drum up interest for "One," out January 19th. Wood and the label have high hopes for Izzo, who is trying not to think about it. "There's been so many different times of anticipation and disappointment that I've gone through for so long that I try to remain neutral," Izzo says. "Everyone on the record is just happy we've made a really good record that we can be proud of. Everything else is just icing on the cake." The album also features guest appearances by local jazz guitar ace Fareed Haque and Wood, and the Aluminum Group's Eddie Carlson handles bass duties. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 11:15:18 EDT From: Danaldj@aol.com Subject: smiths fans can't get any!!! (I suppose Daniel Hurlburt is no ordinary photographer.) re: Blair Witch Project and M.L.M.'s suspension of disbelief ("I would still beg to differ--but i guess that's only me")... Okay, this is getting a little annoying. If you can come up with some proof that a) these film students actually were never seen again & this footage is all that was found [you don't _honestly_ think that, do you? Good grief!]; or b) there actually is a Blair Witch LEGEND in Maryland [or elsewhere] involving the disappearance of young people, then great. Otherwise, I'll hold with the filmmakers, journalists, and sensible movie-goers who know that the Blair Witch Project is TOTAL FICTION. "I do agree that is way to hyped up though. I mean it looks like an extrememly interesting film and everything but i hate when they devestate low budget/indie films by turning them into the fucking TITANIC bullshit." Titanic? The BWP grossed something like $1.5 million over the weekend, and when it gets its "wide release" (to some 700-800 theaters), I doubt it'll reach Titanic proportions. "Oh...and i just wanted to warn you all...Eyes Wide Shut--SUCKS..don't even bother..." Maybe you just didn't know how to watch it. I saw Eyes Wide Shut over the weekend and loved it. It did seem long after a while, but the movie is so dreamlike and mysterious, I didn't mind the length. There's a lot going on underneath the surface of movies like this (the same goes for, say, Liz Phair's music), you just gotta know how to look for it, I guess. Anyway, I say GO SEE IT.
