Why is it that so many people don't like Baby Got Going? It's one of my favorite songs from WCSE... sort of an Ode to Joy=Masturbation, as it were. I nearly always have to hit Repeat and listen again when I'm playing WCSE. Why don't people like it? Is it the railroad/train track rhythm? The lyrics? The harmonica? I'm partial to blues, so maybe that's why I dig the song. Just wondering why so many people have put it near the bottom of their WCSE song "rankings." FYI to Sandra, Jaime, etc. -- my Johnny Feelgood is definitely not on this list. He's not a Liz fan, he didn't use Liz to "suck me in." He's a fellow actor in a play I was in, and didn't need to suck me in at all... I was so consumed with lust that he could have been unaware of my existence and still sucked me in. I was his from the get-go. Y'all will see him some day in a soap opera or a movie, I swear on everything that is sacred... As for the Lonely Hearts Club, Part II... well, as if anyone cares, my (very) LONG-term relationship has ended since my last post. I don't know 99.9% of you, but this is a BIG DEAL in my life. And it's not my Johnny Feelgood with whom I had this LONG relationship. My JF is actually a minor reason why my 10-year relationship has ended. (Yes, you read that right -- 10 years.) Well anyways, I'm wondering if y'all could post some more heart-mending songs I should listen to, besides Liz's Divorce Song, of course. I could really use some help mending a severely broken heart right now. Here's one person's opinion on tripping. I've done acid once, mushrooms once -- and although many of my friends swear it's great fun, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I didn't have great experiences with either. My acid hit (circa 1986) was cut with speed, so I was super-hyper and constipated (while camping in the Adirondacks -- not fun). My mushroom trip (circa 1988 -- boy, am I dating myself!) was 1/2 great, 1/2 terrible. For those who wonder what it's like: the great part was like hallucinating from sleep deprivation, with all the hallucinations being *extremely* funny. The terrible part was like freaking out, feeling like you were going to pass out/flip out/die/all of the above. Again, not fun. Later. My bed is now paging me. Last night, I went to Lounge Ax in Chicago to see what was being billed as a "solo acoustic" show by Kim Deal. They just announced the show on Friday, so it was kind of a last minute thing. Lounge Ax was packed to the sweaty gills as I made my way up to the front... Two bands opened, but no one cared and no one was paying attention.. there was a really intense feeling in the room about the night's special guest. Kim finally walked in the back door, just before her set was supposed to begin, but was carrying a Fender electric, not an acoustic.... much to the crowd's pleasure.!!.. Also walking in with her was her sister Kelley, also with an electric guitar. What followed was a completely rocking 50 minute set sprinkled with the following (incomplete and not in order) set list of Breeder's/Amps songs as well as a couple of new songs that I did not catch names for... No Aloha Drivin' on 9 Pacer I am decided Cannonball Mom's Drunk IRIS When they started to play IRIS, there was a roar like I've never heard in a small club like this. The crowd was completely fawning and adoring, shouting out requests as well as technical help for the engineer to boost the level of Kim's guitar and voice, which were overpowered by Kelley's on the first song.... Kim & Kelley were very cool about fielding all of the requests and bizzare exclamations that were being shouted out (including a bunch of Pixies/ "gigantic") requests. At the end, they came out to try an encore of some Hank Williams song, but seemed not to remember the chords or the words, and were not able to get through the song.... The crowd stomped and begged for another "proper" encore for about 10 minutes but the house lights finally came on and the crowd slowly dissipated... a few hard core devotees hung out by the stage to wait for them to come back and pick up their gear, but even that didn't happen for about 20 minutes, so we left. On the way to our car, we were walking through the Alley behind Lounge Ax and actually ran into the Deal sisters who were hanging out with a handful of people (including a jet-blonde Nina Gordon from Veruca Salt, who I almost didn't recognize!) by the dumpsters waiting for the crowd to disappear before they went back in. We snagged a quick interview with them (though I'm not sure where it will appear) and I got the following scoop... - -They'd been in Chicago for three weeks to do a record with Steve Albini at his studio - -They have three songs totally finished and will be coming back in the Fall to get some more songs done... _Jim McPherson will not be drumming with this new Breeder's line up, he's officially playing with "Guided By Voices" now - -Josephine Wiiggs is also out of the picture (they also told us that Josephine broke up with the girl in Luscious Jackson...) - -The drums on the new record are being played by ... Kim Deal (?!) who says that that's one of the reasons it's taking so long to finish the songs, because they have to learn the parts on each song for multiple instruments!! - -Kim is no longer going out with the dude from Spin magazine (Jim Greer) and has no comment about her current love life - -They have no idea who the touring line-up will be... - -Kim also went on a rant explaining why she prefered being recorded analog as opposed to digital... she swears that none of her songs will ever be done on Pro-Tools, which is why she works with Albini so often... - -The Kelly Deal 6000 (if anyone cares...) will remain on hiatus while Kelley plays in the Breeders... - -Kelley says that she has been drug and alchohol free for 4 years now and has put the heroin arrest and publicity behind her... _ They Deals spent a long time out in the alley with a bunch of underage fans who'd come from St. Lous & Boston only to be rejected at the door of the 21+ club... - -Apparently, they did the show at Lounge Ax as a favor to a woman named Heather (whom they refer to as "Albini's bitch"), and were leaving Chicago in the morning with Kelley flying home to Minneapolis and Kim being picked up by her Dad and driving back to Dayton, Ohio All in all, a very rewarding night.... I'm sorry this is so long, but I know there are a bunch of Breeder worshippers on this list who might want to hear some of this info.... The stage was buttressed with huge scrims picturing the Lilith '99 logo, a curlicue image of a depressed-looking 18th century woman playing a lyre under a deco-ish tree. But then the second act on the bill was bitchy, bellicose Sandra Bernhard, who hauled out tired road show material in which she dissed anything remotely related to folk singers or to women and music. Sarah McLachlan must have been craving a doppelganger when she made that hire. The crowd had a bit of a multiple personality too, with lesbians and coeds and sweet-faced teenaged girls and hetero hippie couples sporting nose rings — all peacefully coexisting. Then there's Lilith's affirmative action problem. Critics complained the first year that it was strictly a white-chick affair, so last year McLachlan made an all-out and laudable effort to bring performers of color into the mix. Maybe that explains the choice of Mya, the mainstage opener, who seemed less Lilith than aspiring Broadway musical star. The 19-year-old African-American dancer-turned-R&B singer did a fabulous tap number on a portable floor, accompanied only by drums. And she sang several carefully choreographed, artificially sweetened numbers backed by what appeared to be the cast of a Gap khakis ad. Fun and energetic, but rather out of kilter for Lilith. On to the good stuff: Luscious Jackson got Lilith's rock thing going, finally, with an eclectic, flashy sound. They came off like an urban sampler for 20-somethings — a little prep with some cowgirl, beat poet, and grunge all stirred up together but still retaining the individual flavors. The group was especially strong on its hits "Naked Eye" and "Ladyfingers," and got everybody pogo-dancing to "Citysong." Back to Sandra B for a few excruciating moments of … something. Then Liz Phair picked up where Luscious Jackson left off, by announcing, "I feel the need to rock." And she did, with "Never Said," "Johnny Feelgood," and "Polyester Bride" (the last two from her most recent album, whitechocolatespaceegg). We were a little worried she'd end up with "shaken rock star syndrome" from all the head twirling, but it was especially effective on the new song "Love/Hate." Ah, yes, things were definitely improving. And with the arrival of Sheryl Crow onstage, Lilith Fair stock rose precipitously. Decked out in a white dress embroidered with red flowers and slashed on the diagonal at the hem, Sheryl cranked up the energy level and volume through sheer force of talent. Everything about her — the band, her enormous stage presence — made the multi-hour wait worthwhile. From "My Favorite Mistake" to "There Goes the Neighborhood" to a joint venture with Luscious Jackson on the old double-entendre song "Squeezebox," Crow controlled the crowd with subtlety and strength. Now, that's the essence of Lilith, even more than Sarah McLachlan — a strong woman coming on strong. Crow's problem, if she had one, was one that also dogged McLachlan's set: the sing-along. Everybody at Lilith knew all of the lyrics to both women's songs, turning it into a good old- fashioned hugfest where only new tunes prompted a collective sit-down. But then, that's why fans go to these things, right? To sit in the sweltering summer sun for hours for a few precious moments of face time with their faves. As McLachlan, shimmering in sequined blue cargo pants and white tank, said at the Saturday night close, "Last night, I got flashed during my set … it worked for me." It worked for the Lilith Fair swan song crowd, too. They ate up all of her mellow soul food and begged for more. It was "Sweet Surrender" all the way around. Even the second stage boasted some jewels: Bijou Phillips, Beth Orton, and Sixpence None the Richer all offered stand-out sets. No. 3 may not have been the best Lilith Fair in terms of talent range and musical spirit (No. 2 takes that honor), at least at the Gorge shows, but it surely accomplished its feed-the-starving-women mission. — Rose Pike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 00:24:23 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "Heather Coleman" Subject: Lillith Report - Portland Well, it's been many moons since i took a look at the digest, but I'm going on faith here and assuming that this address still works for contributions. Just thought I'd take this opportunity to feed a little concert material to all you Liz phreaks and share my most recent sighting with some sympathetic souls. I had a bout of luck. I am working for a company which is doing a traffic study of Civic Stadium here in Portland and we needed a few people to attend the concert and survey people about the method of transportation they used to get there. When I heard this, I went to the Lillith website and Liz had just been added to the bill, so I signed up. After battling a little heat exhaustion, finishing up interviewing people in the restroom line, and heading to the field to hear Liz's performance, further luck ensued. At first, all the seats seemed to be taken by bodies either present or not present, and the defenders of those seats informed me that the organizers would not allow one to stand in the aisles. But I was determined to be close to the stage. I kept wandering until some former classmate I barely recognized flagged me down, talked to me, and pointed me in the direction of an empty seat, quite central and just at the back of the first large row of seats. Then I had to wait as Sandra Bernhard came on stage and bad-mouthed everybody. What's her deal, anyway? For those of you who read this list last year, this Lillith report will sound familiar. The most disappointing thing is that the audience at Lillith Fair just doesn't seem to know Liz Phair. Then when Sarah comes on, everyone just goes wild. This has confounded me for the past day. I'm sure it's partly a matter of exposure, since so many of Sarah's songs make it on the radio. But this is a discussion we've had before, no? Anyhow, Liz came on stage. She wore black stretch pants and a grey halter top with a laced-up string back and high-heeled sandals of some sort. Her hair was sort of blowing in the wind back behind her face. Her voice seemed really strong and her performance very solid. She danced around on stage a lot and kept exhibiting her back, which looked like it had been participating in a great deal of circuit training. She dribbled some water from her water bottle on one of the security guards beneath the stage. The song line up was this (approximate order): Mesmerizing Explain it to Me Johny Feelgood Divorce Song Polyester Bride Hello Stranger Supernova 6'1" and a new song i didn't catch the name of The Hello Stranger song uses the same tune as "Hello Sailor" from Girlysounds, but doesn't have the same bite or wit. I think the original song is so great, but i suppose it would have to be put in a different context now anyway if it were going to be released, as the Gulf War is over. The new song might be about oneself being a stranger, because she says something about looking in the mirror, but I'm not sure. Sarah came on during Divorce Song and the crowd went crazy. Before, I'd been one of the few people standing up in my area, which was a little awkward. Then when Sarah came on, everyone stood up. Sarah sung the line "Well it's true that I stole your lighter.." but then missed another line ("And then accused me of trying..."). Part of the audience did seem to recognize "Supernova," so that was fun. It seems Liz put a clip from one of her voice lessons in one of her new songs, as she has sort of an opera moment. Well, it was over too quickly. She waved as she went off-stage and I, at least, waved back. Sheryl Crow came on after Liz and I do see that she's a strong performer with a very strong voice, very confident on stage and lets her personality show and jokes with everybody. And then Sarah McLachlan has the pretty songs and the big light show, the big flowing voice and great turqoise sparkly pants. Still, I wish more people had been standing and dancing and singing along with me during Liz's performance. that wraps up my report. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 00:25:51 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "Sarah May Scott" Subject: Liz Phair Hey--want to get on the mailing list for Liz...my email is sms229@psu.edu I'm also looking for anyone that has access to Liz's bootlegs and would be able to burn me a copy... thanks... sarah ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 00:46:26 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: The Pretenders Hey everyone, Since there has been talk of them in the past on the list, I was just wondering if anyone's heard the new Pretenders album yet?
