Don't get all excited, Liz isn't coming to town, but there is a good gig on Monday 12th July. It's at the Notting Hill Arts Centre and it's to promote the Dreamy records release "Head in the Clouds" and featured acts are arco, Kirk Lake, Chris Starling, Jamie Owen and Graham. For more details go to the Dreamy site... www.dreamyrecods.demon.co.uk Also that night and slightly earlier, so you can do both, is Damien Jurado at the Rough Trade shop in Notting Hill. I can't make the DJ and due to various reasons way too personal to go into, i'm not welcome at the Dreamy gig. But it should be good, probably all the better without me as most things are, so go along if you're in town and if not, buy the album as it's beautiful and i wish i could play it, but i just cry. On a Barbara Manning note, she's coming to London in a few weeks, i'll post the date when i find out when it is. I saw her a few years ago and she's mad as a balloon. Great though. I've only got one of her albums and i got that in Seattle. She's pretty much unknown here, but i have heard a rumour that she's going to be playing live on GLR 94.9fm (visitors, listen to this not Radio 1 or Capital and definately not xfm, these guys have been known to play LIz). Again i don't know when, but i'll let you know. Nicole, take it easy and i feel for you. I've been deleted from the life of my last love. Okay fellow listers I need your opinion on something. I'm re-defining some of my tastes in music and heading into a different direction/attitude (don't ask what that means, I'm not sure myself at this point) and I need to expand my collection of a certain type of music. Besides some/most of the music of the Beatles, Beck, Liz, Neil Young, Blind Melon, Grateful Dead , etc, who else can I check out that falls into that lo-fi-laid-back-but-still-jams-slacker mentality? Preferably newer groups... More bizarre gems for Liz to cover - Imagine her singing these... "Time of the Season" - the Zombies 'It's the time...of the season...' "At the Zoo" - Simon & Garfunkle" 'Something tells me its all happenin at the zoo..' "Tales of Brave Ulysses" - Cream 'Tiny purple fishes, run laughing through your fingers..' "That's the Way" - Led Zep 'And all the fish that lay in dirty water dying ..have they got you hypnotized...' On a side note, how many here have done the Pink Floyd DSOTM/Wizard of Oz Synchronicity? Here is a Boston Phoenix review from that show: By the time I made it next door for the last half-dozen songs of Girls Against Boys' set, the downstairs at the Middle East was mostly empty, and with good reason. There was a time when GVSB's mixture of cool downtown noir and intuitive post-soul subterranean groove seemed primed to become a mainstream phenomenon. But after abandoning the legacy of the Fall, Kraftwerk, and Gang of Four for the derivative discofied electronics of last year's Freak*on*ica (Geffen), GVSB found themselves abandoned as well. At the Middle East the gravel-voiced Scott McCloud meditated on the line "It's great to be a rock-and-roll star" to the 100 or so people left in the room, his über-ironic phrasings suddenly sounding like an outmoded form of discourse, like the faded Pep Boys and Atari logos on their T-shirts. Even when the foursome (bass, bass, drums, guitar, with Eli Janney doubling up on keyboards) went back to older tunes like "Kill the Sexplayer," there was no sign of past glories. It was a real bummer. If you're not a diehard fan maybe you should save your $10 for another show . . .
