She should be sweeping the Grammies for cryin' out loud! Having seen how some of my friend's bands have been treated by record companies, it is absolutely impossible to tell from the info. I've seen what happened here. One thing I do notice about her music is that it takes a lot more than one song to grasp how good she really is. PB is a good song, but that alone would not have been enough to get me to the record store. What Makes You Happy certainly would have, and the person that turned me on to Liz did so after hearing Uncle Alvarez on the radio. >i'm really glad liz isn't main stream. >it seems inevitable, that once you go >main stream it's only a matter of time >before you sell out. >~Taryn I haven't really seen that--it depends on which facet of the artist's art you appreciate. For example, if you appreciate a rough-around-the-edges approach and the artist grows into a better singer/player, that isn't necessarily selling out. I do think that almost all artists have a finite amount of good product to offer and some hit the end of their rope sooner than others. >Anyone know what "the ugly pilgrim thing" is in the >line "I know all about the ugly pilgrim thing" in >Dance of the Seven Veils? If it hadn't been Liz doing Lilith last year, I probably wouldn't have looked into her music at all. Lilith was a great way to get exposure since there's plenty of artists featured and you have all the fans...blah blah blah.. In short, there are many artists I've checked out cuz of Lilith. JC wrote (Responding to Taryn's comments): "I've found Liz to be the easiest thing in my music collection to turn people on to...just let them listen to Exile and they're hooked." Yes totally! I've already gotten three people into Liz by suggesting EIG. There's this girl I made a tape for at work and asked her about it yesterday. She told me she loves Divorce Song. Yikes! I was shocked to hear her actually name *A* song! Of course, I also wrote on the J-card to feel free to pass the tape around, but it looks like she'll be keeping it for herself. :) TMK wrote: "Liz is PICTURED in the current issue of Rolling Stone" Might want to check out rollingstone.com to see the "new" five pictures they have in her gallery. Katie ();) NP: Sarah McLachlan_Touch ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 09:18:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Tedford Subject: Liz's exposure After reading Dan's post pondering the question of "Why doesn't Liz get more exposure?" I got to thinking about the issue myself. The thing is I see Liz as getting tons of exposure over past year. She's appeared in pretty much every major magazine, done advertising on MTV (influences), done a Calvin Klein campaign, a PBS special (sessions at...), print campaign for rollingstone.com, tons of radio interviews and in-studio performance, received high marks from just about every music mag, toured relentlessly, done all the major talk shows, and took time out of recording her follow up to WCSE to play a benefit show last week. Capitol put a strong promotional push on Liz right from the get go generating strong word of mouth months before WCSE was even released. I think the issue isn't really exposure, but why she doesn't get played. There are a lot of great radio stations out there that play Liz frequently. After WCSE's release, she was at the top of the college radio play list for quite a while. Unfortunately, if you live in a town like I do, there is no good radio. In a lot of places what passes for modern rock radio is marginal at best. I choose to listen to public radio most of the time and you can often hear Liz if you've got a strong station, especially those that love to support singer/songwriters. As far as video, I think it is almost lost as a strong promotional device. When was the last time MTV broke anybody, much less played videos. Liz actually got good rotation from some of the smaller video channels. Unfortunately, most of us don't get those. I am happy and content with Liz's current success level. A lot of people view success with the mega stardom mult-platinum stature which just isn't the norm for most bands. This often inevitably leads to a backlash from the public and the fans. Liz does very well and I suspect she will remain steady for a long time to come. If she does have a breakout hit one day, good for her, and I will still support her. That's just my take on the issue. All this tour talk is tormenting at times. Wooh, count those t's. But, reading over the last couple of digests before going to sleep last night must have left a little Liz in my head which resulted in this really cool dream. Liz happened to move into this low rent block of flats that I lived in (in the dream that is). I said hello and told her I liked her music. We sat outside her room and talked about things. She had a couple of Beth Orton posters in her window which I thought was odd, but Beth is great and she thought so too. Then after a few coffees, I found some courage and asked her 'do you think you could do me a copy of your Girlysound tapes' and she raised an eyebrow and I said 'I swear to god, I will not bootleg them and sell them' and then she said 'sure' and that was all I remember. Still didn't get to hear the Girlysound tapes though. Liz though....what a nice girl. Dreaming is free.
