I'm new to mailing lists as well. I've been reading this one for ten days now and I'm starting to be able to follow some of the correspondence. In any event, I'd like to introduce myself so everyone will have an idea where I'm coming from. I recognize that long posts can be overwhelming so I'm going to put all of the detail in brackets so you can easily skip them and just skim the main items. My friend Toby gave me a tape with eight songs from WCSE on it which I promptly lost for a couple of months. When it finally surfaced, I popped it in and listened while I was doing other things. It sounded pretty good but I wasn't paying that much attention. Same for the second time through. The next time I had the tape in my car and I cranked it through the first two songs and that was the first time I really heard "Perfect World". That did it. I thought to myself, "Damn, she's REALLY GOOD." I then proceeded to play those eight songs into the ground and I still love all of them. What a great songwriter and lyricist!! That was about one and a half months ago. At this point all I knew about Liz was that I saw her on the covers of magazines several years ago and knew she was a critics favorite, but had never heard anything. Now I've been playing guitar (and other instruments) since I was in second grade and I'm two years older than Liz. [My favorite artist in third grade was John Denver. I graduated to Kiss and Cheap Trick in junior high and was blown away by Yes in about seventh grade and have survived on a steady diet of Yes, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Led Zep, the Beatles etc. ever since. Only in the last couple of years have I moved away from progressive rock somewhat since there's a very limited amount of good stuff out there which you can only listen to so many times.] I moved to LA from upstate New York when I turned 21 and I slugged it out in the LA music scene for eight years. [I played with the progressive rock band Glass House for six years. We got a few songs onto some TV shows, one of which was mine. They were just background music for some movies of the week but I still receive royalties. I spent four years in Paris Quadrifolia which morphed into Betsy's Big Day for the last six months of our existence. Our closest brush with success was a CD we released ourselves which was promoted by Joe Benson, a local DJ for KLOS at the time. Joe heard our band just as the Betsy (lead vocals) and Toby (her husband and songwriter/keyboardist) were preparing to move back to Illinois to raise their family. We gave it a mighty heave ho at the end and Joe Benson got Greg Landanyi (sp.) (Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Toto) a grammy winning producer and Ken Scott (the Beatles, Pink Floyd), an engineer to come see one of our last shows. Ken passed on working with us largely because we passed some shots on stage at the Club Lingerie (which we never did but it was one of our last shows!) and he was a recently recovered alcoholic, but Greg liked us and remixed and produced our CD gratis! We played a couple more shows and tried to get the industry out. We received great feedback, but not from anyone who could offer us a recording contract. We disbanded the year the first Sheryl Crow CD was released and woman in rock became huge. Damn.] Four years ago I hung up the ax, dragging it out only for singalongs at neighborhood parties. Most of the magic in music was gone for me and I concentrated on my job at a LA law firm and raising my two children. The music of Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee) was the last thing that really floated my boat, and he died tragically (and somewhat ridiculously) about four years ago so there hasn't been anything that has really turned me on since then. I do like those Goo Goo Dolls and some of the Gin Blossoms. Actually, there's a lot of cool stuff on the radio these days--not like the Eighties! Anyway, WCSE changed all that and music is once again magic. The only thing that's sort of depressing is, if that CD didn't put her over the top, what possibly could? I mean come on! I have the three CDs now and have heard much of Girlysounds. Since EIG came second for me, my perspective is somewhat unique in comparison to most of the rest of you, I suspect. I have an interesting Barbara Manning story to share in future (much shorter) posts. Looking forward to hearing from anyone and everyone... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 02:25:20 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "Janelle M.Wong-Moon" Subject: Columbia House I don't know how it works in the USA but I do know here in Canada that artists royalties for product sold thru Columbia House and other record clubs are EXTREMELY low. Dear All, I am sorry if I overreacted in my post yesterday. This whole situation really had upset me and I freaked out. I was tired of defending myself to all of you. But I shouldn't have taken it out on everyone in a blanket statement like that. After all, some of the people on this list are really great people! I've met some really kind and generous people on this list. (And I don't really believe that anyone should buy bootlegs from eBay!) After some time spent seriously considering the situation, I realized it was best to just let it all go. This has also really made me think about these virtual communities and the relationship that we all have because of this one. (And I can promise that I am going to go back to lurking for a while!) Dear Jamie, Thank you for apologizing publicly. I wasn't expecting it, but I do appreciate it. No hard feelings. This whole situation is crazy and got way out of hand. I say that we all just forget the whole thing ever happened. I decided yesterday to just let this whole situation go - I hope that you can do the same. I think that there's too much negativity in the world already, why contribute to it by continuing this or harboring any negative feelings? Let's put an end to this whole thing and just move on with Life. Be happy. Agreed? I heard one of their songs the other day and it's still pretty catchy even though they don't really sing. Does anyone know the story about the people that actual did do the singing in the studio? See, at first, I passed it off on the fact that she was with Matador records, and for such a small company - she was doing okay, getting great reviews in major magazines, playing Lilith, ect.. okay, she's on Capital now, right? A perk of being on a somewhat major record label is usually better - or PROPER - promotion, isn't it? Why is it that it has been NEARLY a year since Liz released such an exceptional album - but we only have *one* video...and only *one* unofficial single? Why does she have minimal airplay on radio? Why have we only seen "Polyester Bride" video (an amazing song and a video that's as good as the rest of them) played maybe a total of 3 times? Basically, I don't understand why Liz is being shunned by the mainstream..I mean, this might be a blessing in disguise. It's cool to be part of a somewhat...intimate fan base, and It's kind of fun in an old school way to have to DIG to find facts and little phairities on liz..but at the same time..I really don't see why "what's-his-face" isn't releasing another single from such an incredible album as WCSE. It's about time. Oh well..I'm sure Liz will have her moment in the sun...I guess this is kind of her ongoing 15 minutes - isn't it? Better to be a steady rocker than a flash in the pan I guess - but at the same time..it is frustrating..knowing she has an album FILLED with beautiful rock songs - and no fun video-visual stimulation to go along with them. I'm just bitchy again..I don't really want to see Liz become the BackStreet Boys or anything...I guess she's doing okay respect-wise - and even better musically. Seeing as I work for an arm of a major Canadian bank I am well aware of what can and can't be done with international funds/cheques/women etc... The fact A $US cheque is easily deposited or cashed via a Canadian banking institution (only through a teller though). The only restriction being that often they put a 10 day hold on the cheque before letting it enter your account. (Personally I can bypass this because I am on staff -->be a banker, it pays off!). The "shot" I was taking at Janet (taking into consideration of course that at the time it was sounding like Janet had screwed a couple of people, admittedly I was a little 'soured'.) was not about her making an attempt to screw me out of $5 (approx C$236). What I was joking about was the ridicule that can be accompanied with a 25 year old walking into a bank during the day in a suit, accompanied by his $5 cheque, waiting in line for 10 minutes and then having some fellow 25 year old in a suit (the teller)cash it and make a snide remark such as "Don't spend it all in one place, Opie!". Flip the situation around my American Lizters. Imagine one of us silly canooks sends you one of our Canadian dollar cheques (all Canadian cheques have either Kids in the Hall or Strange Brew scenes in the background, so they are easy to identify) for $5. Are you going to run down to the bank to cash it via the teller? Hopefully everyone gets my point now. This isn't about fraud or the International Monetary system. It's about hockey.
