I usually receive all of the posts for the list in real-time (as they are sent in), but I've been having problems with my mail account and a few posts never arrived here. So, just reading the digest now, I saw Jaime's post where she gave Janet's email address, and it turns out that it may not be the email address of the Janet in Michigan that I know. At least, it's not the address she uses to receive the list or that I've written her at. At the same time, though, it is an AOL account and while I don't really remember from my own AOL experience long ago, aren't you able to have more than one screen name with them? Jaime, if you could email me and let me know Janet's last name or address, I'll be able to verify if it's the Janet I know or not. If it is, you really don't need to worry -- I'm sure she will come through for you and TMK. If it's not the Janet I know, I'm going to feel like a bit of a goof for posting my defense of her, but how many Janet's in the state of Michigan could there be on the list? My first real concert was seeing Stone Temple Pilots on July 10, 1994 at the Marcus Amphitheater in Milwaukee, WI during the last night of Summerfest '94. The lineup: Stone Temple Pilots Meatpuppets Red Cross It was a packed sold out crowd of over 25,000 people. The atmosphere was amazing that night with the crowd going nuts all night long and singing around to EVERY song. The stage setup was amazing too with 2 huge 50 ft. lava lamps on each side of the stage. The band, and especially Scott Weiland, was at top form that night, with Scott dancing around and flailing his arms around wildly as usual. When all was said and done I had lost my voice and my ears were ringing for almost a week, and it was all worth it. Next to Liz it was definately the best concert experience of my life. I will say that I find this situation unfortunate. In addition to my workload, am a student and do volunteer work on weekends (i.e., I'm busy). I must say that all of my obligations have suffered recently, and my social life, e-mail correspondence, and any tapes that I was making for others have all been put on hold. And when I say tapes - I do mean plural -- since offering to make GS copies for people who don't have them I have been swamped! Please write me and let me know where to send them so that I can mail them out again. Nathan - - I got your tapes yesterday and will send them out with Tommy's later this week.) So here is my final response. Jamie, I want to let you know that I don't appreciate what you've said about me. I also don't appreciate you telling the list where I am from or all of the addresses I have e-mailed you from. Although I never got back to you, I never heard back from you either, and I figured that maybe things had become hectic for you too. "I hope you get booted from the list, and if I ever meet you in real-life you better hope I am smaller than you--- " Resorting to name calling and threats of physical violence? I don't know what to make of that, except to say that after your tirade and hostile behavior I don't want to meet you, or trade with you. " ... and actually she will probably either never face this list again, or she'll change her name or something. " No, I am not about to change my name or leave this list. "besides -- have you ever heard of karma????" Yes, I have. Have you? "It is a fucking shame that someone on this list would behave in such a way." So I get to his house, and he's like "wanna smoke a bowl?" And Id ont' really necessarily want to sing stoned, but i don't want him to be stoned and me not, so i oblige eventually (even though i alway scomplain about how i hate being stoned. Well i've been stoned like 7 times alreayd this summer). Oh i forgot to say w4e're going to go to the karaoke bar and meet my friends there. My friend told me that it was 18+ (i'm only <20... meaning i'll be 20 August 31), so i didn't think we'd get carded, and eventually we did, but tha'ts beside the point. Anyway, to make a long story short, I did sing two songs("Cherish" by Madonna and "Angel" by Jimi Hendrix, which really doesn't translate twell to the karaoke backup track shit)... and while I was looking through the catalog of songs, I saw one called "Everything's coming Up Roses" by Ethel Merman, and I made a note to myself, literally, so when I wasn't stoned I'd remember this. Id n't listen to ethel merman. Does anyone know anything about this song? Cuz i'm thinking it's a possible candidate for another song liz borrowed from, you know for "Elvis Be True?" So I'm currently trying to search the web for an audio clip of this song, but i haven't found one yet. Oh fuck. It won't matter if i do cuz i don't have a current copy of real player right now. Fuck it. well... later, and i'm sure i had more to say. oh does anyone on this list work for Toys R Us or ASny of the "R Us" stores? Wasn't that meetin tonight lame as all hell? Any thoughts >on this? Here's the part of the NY Times article that I believe you are referring to: Most major labels have added what's called a new technology deduction clause to the contracts they offer bands. What it does is subtract 15 percent to 25 percent of the royalty rate of 12 percent to 13 percent that a new band receives for each record sold. The labels maintain that the clause is necessary because of the costs of Internet-related technology. This rationale seems strange because the distribution of music on the Internet is supposed to save record labels money in CD manufacturing, packaging and shipping costs. If it is, the fact is that the record companies aren't claiming more of the profits from albums sold through sites like CDnow. I believe they're referring to music that is intended to be sold online as downloadable files, which a lot of labels are talking about getting into. Many are saying that they will be making entire albums available for download, starting in the very near future. Perhaps the labels view these deductions as necessary to fund the copyright protection systems they are trying to develop for online music, but it's still unfair to the artists. I'm still unclear on some of the details -- maybe these royalty cuts will be taken from all albums sold through any means, and not just ones purchased as downloads. I haven't yet read anything on the matter that's been entirely clear. Anyway, to the best of my knowledge, an artist will receive the same amount in royalties for an album sold through CDnow as from any other retail outlet. However, artists (and songwriters, as well) receive a reduced royalty rate for albums sold through music clubs such as Columbia House. I believe they get three-quarters the regular rate, and in the case of free selections, I think they get totally stiffed, although I'm not completely sure about that. It's been a while since I've heard anything about the subject, but I do know that it has to do with the fact that the music clubs license the albums from the record labels for manufacture. Your best bet of the two would be to purchase albums from CDnow, although in my opinion, you'd be better off going to your local indie retailer and supporting them. Many indie record shops already have a tough time competing against the chain stores and it's likely only going to get harder for them. While they don't have the financial resources to have the same selection as your local Tower store, they're usually more than happy to order whatever you're after if it's not in stock, and since such stores don't have the same high overhead as a chain outlet, they can usually sell it to you cheaper.
