Hey fellow Liz lovers. I'm new to this list - I've been on the distribution for about a week or so now, and have been enjoying the Liz-related emails. Too much non-Liz related notes if you ask me though. But I digress. I've been a huge Liz phan since '95. I've seen her in concert 3 times (95 in NYC, 98 in NYC, and 99 in Providence, RI). But I'd see her twice a week if I could. It's funny... I'm 26 and never in my life have I been star-struck or have I had a obsession with anyone famous. But at this stage of my life I can't seem to get enough of Liz... web sites, music, pictures, and now on my first ever distribution list. I've even managed to get my girlfiend into Liz's music. The more Liz the better. And that's where I'm hoping you can help. I've seen a couple of obscure CD's out there (in particular 'Secretly Timid', and 'Girlysounds') that I'm itching to get my hands on. Is there any at all out there that can help me find a place where I can purchase these (and other obscure CD's?) I have the obvious ones, and Juvenalia, but I want more! Can you help? If so, please email me at Also, did anyone see the amazing slides from her own photo collection that Liz displayed for her opening of the whitechocolatespaceegg tour? There were some amazing pictures of Liz in there. Any ideas if there is any way to find or purchase those photos? That might be a long shot but I was thinking someone might have found a way to get ahold of them. Also, one stupid question... I see many people ended their emails with 'NP', and then a band or something like that. What does NP stand for? Looking forward to reading more great Liz info in the years to come. Peace out, Bouche "It's cold... out there. And rough. But I kept standing 6' 1" - Liz. (And coincidentally, that happens to be my real height. And even also, i can see her making it rougher and more...breathy...you know what i mean...i just think it would be cool. OH! I'm also thought it would be cool for her to cover "Cryin" by Roy Orbison. I mean, obviously that would take some work on Liz's part, but think about how beautiful the out-come could be! Oh, and somebody asked when we got into Liz--it was shortly before WCSE.....a friend of mine played EIG to no avail. Usually I take one apart to find out. Of course, then it never does work again... Anyway: There may be 8-track recorders, which would be like 4-track recorders, allowing you to layer 8 things instead of just 4. I haven't really heard of them, though. A 4-track is what you hear about because it's practically dirt cheap, and gives good enough quality to work on songs in your garage or your bedroom. It uses standard cassette tapes, which, if you think about it, almost always have 4 tracks on them anyway. A stereo recording uses 2 tracks, and then you have a stereo recording going the OPPOSITE way on the other half of the tape surface. So that's 4. But on a 4-track recorder, it records the four tracks in the same direction, using the whole width of the tape. You can record one or more at a time, I think, then "bounce" all 4 of those off and back on to one track, letting you add 3 more, ad infinitum. Now for the fun part---8-TRACK!!! Not an 8-track recorder, but the old 8-track cartridges popular mainly as one of the early car audio formats. Some of you may never have seen one, but trust me, it was a remarkably ODD construction. It was a fat tape in a cartridge, with 8 tracks side-by-side in the same direction (4 stereo sets.) It didn't REWIND, though, because it was one big loop! It all wound up in a big coil inside, with the part of the tape just played winding onto the outside of the coil, and the tape ABOUT to be played coming out of the middle of the coil, making a half-turn on its way to the tape head. Crazy stuff! They broke all the time. What most of us remember best, though, is how the whole tape was something like 20 minutes long (times 4, though, makes 80 minutes capacity). So a few songs would be on each of the 4 stereo tracks. And usually, your favorite one would be half on one track, and half on the next. So "Devil Went Down to Georgia" is happily playing along on track three, and then you get to the beginning/end of the loop, and "CLUNK!" over to track 4 we go to finish the song, with only a slight pause in the middle. As I said, exceptionally odd. There are those who collect, repair, and even recreationally RECORD on these things, though. You can find them on the internet somewhere. As for me, I've cut my 8-track collection down to pretty much just MeatLoaf's "Bat Out of Hell." Which I also have on LP. And cassette. And minidisc. And CD. And 24K gold CD. And... - ---Mark _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. But everyone changes. Knowing Alanis so well (even though I dont know her personally) I know her enough to know that she really is honest! she didn't change purposely. I read an article that she hardly spends her money. She does lots of charity. She loves to express herself through anything. She's writing a screenplay and book now. It's not a hyperbole that she wrote them all in one day. they were all demos. She didn't even finish them up. She wanted them that way, to capture the moment. She does it like that for all her songs now.She didn't even expect JLP to become big. Africa? It was just India. She went there with her mother, and her mother's friends, as a "goddess trip" cause her brother said she "had to go there." She got very sick there, and almost died. She's allergic to medicines and stuff, so she thought she would die. it changed her views a lot. >Well, I have seen her on the latest tour and have >heard all four albums worth of her songs. (Have you?) >She has been a pop queen for her entire career, both >before and after the change in direction. >From where I'm listening, Alanis really does have more >in common with the likes of manufactured pop bands >like BSBs and Shania Twain, than Liz Phair and Tori >Amos. I've heard all 4 too...u have to understand. She was only like 16. She did it for entertainment purposes. She didn't feel she had enough of herself in the writing process, and she was going through a very rough time. She moved to Los Angeles, and then lived on friend's couches and stuff, and on a flight home to canada for christmas, she had a nervous breakdown and bawled her eyes out, and I heard she went to a psych, and he said that since she expresses herself through music mostly , that she should try writing songs, and poems about her feelings. she did, and they turned out to be demos. Someone took "perfect" to maverick, and they said "we have to sign this girl" and the second they played "You Oughta Know" all the lights lit up, and it just snowballed. If she really was a BSB kind of singer, she would have polished up her songs a lot, and if u hear the new album, its about fame and money not making a person happy. Oh and hello?? Tori....Y KANT TORI READ? don't tell me tori wasn't like that. She was in that 80's band thingie, and then became the piano tori...how is that different?oh and that disco stuff in the early 90's, caused her to become the singer she today, because most of that stuff harbored in her, and she needed to get it out. Most of the depression was from being that, and she said when she first arrived in L.A, most people had preconceived notions of who she was, and she wanted to start over, because she felt she didn't get to express her emotions as much in the old music. U probably will laugh at this stuff, and make it like I'm so naive, and gullible, but alanis is a very true person, I know she isn't a fake. steve ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V2 #160 ************************************
