By Julene Snyder It's a shame that singer/ songwriter Sarah McLachlan has decided that this summer's Lilith Fair will be the last. These two CDs provide proof that Lilith has managed to transcend the formulaic drudgery of the past two years' testosterone-fueled summer concert circuit. The 28 songs chosen from 1998's live performances roam all over the geographic and aural map, ranging from Berlin-born Me'Shell Ndegeocello's ebullient paean to '70s soul (aptly titled "Soul Record") to the U.K. trip-hop combo Morcheeba's psychedelic groove, "The Sea." Listening to songs like these, it's easy to picture a sea of grrls turned toward the stage, swaying in unison under the midday sun. Lilith Fair was designed to give female artists more exposure in a male-dominated music industry. It worked beautifully, managing to out-gross both Lollapalooza and H.O.R.D.E. But McLachlan announced in late April that the end is in sight. "We always had a three-year plan right from the start, and this is going to be the last year in North America for a good long while," McLachlan said. "It comes from realizing that we're all well into our '30s, and some of us want to have babies." Babies aside, Lilith seemed to offer concertgoers a genuine sense of community, at least for one day. Hey, that's a better return than usual on one's concert dollar, and by the evidence here, the music alone was worth the price of admission. Luscious Jackson's "Naked Eye" skitters and dips, evoking a groovy mood with the insistent chorus, "It feels all right/ It feels all right." Less successful is Natalie Merchant's cover of "In the Ghetto"; but, to be fair, the song's lyrics are so ridiculous and overwrought that even Elvis couldn't pull them off. Lisa Loeb's performance of "I Do" is casual to the point of lethargy. Better is Liz Phair's "Never Said", in which the singer comes across like your cool big sister who's home from college and showing off her newfound grown-up skills. Tracy Bonham's "Meat Hook" is a welcome, raucous interlude, while the Cowboy Junkies' "Miles From Our Home" is pleasant, if unchallenging. Less successful efforts include Rebekah's "Little Black Girl" -- with labored lyrics like "It's a minor miracle just to make the graduation when no one in your world gives you a hint of validation" -- and the instantly forgettable "Kiss Me" from Sixpence None the Richer. The latter tune seems ideally suited for a bathroom/ beer break. But there are transcendent moments scattered throughout, notably Queen Latifah's uplifting "Life" and McLachlan's duet with Emmylou Harris on the spine-tingling "Angel." Holly McFarland's "Elmo" is a rousing rocker and N'Dea Davenport's rendition of "Underneath a Red Moon" is smoothly satisfying, thanks mainly to the thick honey of her voice. After awhile, the female voices here all start to blur into one, but on the whole, this chronicle of the Lilith Fair is both a worthy souvenir for those who were there and a snapshot of the event for those who missed it. But what is the story behind Juvenilia? Was it released just as a >"filler" album between LPs or as a contractual thing or as a >at-the-moment-money-maker? And who picked the songs for it..was it Liz or >some schmuck in a suit and tie? I really don't know much about _Juvenilia_'s release, and interestingly, it never seems to get mentioned during any of Liz's interviews. That said, to the best of my knowledge, Liz did choose all of the songs for it; it was a Matador-only release, not one going through major-label distribution, and they usually give their acts total freedom with their projects. It's quite interesting what songs were chosen though, since there were better Girly Sound tracks that could have been included instead of what was used. While "Easy" is a favorite of mine, I'd liked to have seen songs like "Sometimes A Dream (Is What Makes You A Slave)" and "If I Ever Pay You Back" released instead of "California" and "Dead Shark". I just think that they are much stronger songs. Of course, there is always the possibility that Liz might have been thinking of rerecording them for her next record at that time, and wanted them to remain unreleased for that reason. At that point in time, Matador released a lot more EPs and singles than they do now, so it probably just seemed like a natural idea to release _Juvenilia_ in support of "Jealousy", which was Liz's then-current single. My memory is sketchy on this and I probably should go back and reread some of the earlier articles on Liz, but I do believe that she was initially signed for one album and one EP, but after _Exile_ was released, she signed a bigger contract for more albums. I don't know whether the new contract canceled out the old one, but if it didn't, perhaps _Juvenilia_ was released partly to count as the EP she owed the label. I don't recall there ever being any talk of it being a stop-gap release between albums, although it certainly didn't hurt matters. The EP was released in August 1995, close to a year after _Whip-Smart_'s release, and at that point, Liz still hadn't started recording the next album and was in the process of lining up a producer for it, having fallen out with Brad Wood. So with the release of a third record nowhere in immediate sight, _Juvenilia_ was something to tide us all over, whether that had been the intention or not. I'm quite thankful we at least got that much, plus the few soundtrack cuts that appeared between releases. When the album's initial release date was set for May 1996, the wait didn't seem long at all; little did we know then that it would be delayed repeatedly for the next two years. >>There are about 925 subscribers to this list right now > >I was just curious how 'accurate' this figure is. Not that that is a problem, hell I'm glad to be able to rant >with my fellow Liz lovers and I for one would be lost without it. Yes, everyone remains subscribed until either they unsub themselves or ask me to do it. If the digests start bouncing back to me from any given account, I will usually let it ride for a few days, in case it's just a temporary problem with their mail server, but after that, I will unsub the problem address, as all of the bounced digests start filling up my account really quickly. If it's a 'user has exceeded mail quota' error, I try to let it go until the problem's been resolved if it doesn't go on for too long, but in the case of a 'user unknown' or 'mailbox not found' message, I usually will only wait three days. I do exchange emails on a somewhat regular basis with other list members who don't post, but I can vouch for the fact that they read and enjoy the digests. A lot of you are probably aware that a bunch of us from the list have an IRC channel we chat on, and a couple of the regulars there are also people who mainly just lurk on the list. Also, some of the list members I've met at shows are people who only read, but don't post. It may seem that we have an unusually high percentage of lurkers, but it's not that uncommon. I am on a number of lists myself where I very seldom ever post, but read the digests regularly, either because I enjoy the discussions or to find whatever information I can on the bands I like. There are a couple that I would probably post to regularly if I had enough time to, and others where I just don't feel like I have much to add to the discussions. Perhaps that is the case with some of the people on this list, too. I'm on one list (Chalkhills, for the band XTC) that is bigger than ours, but has about the same number of core posters as we do. The other lists I'm on don't have quite as many subscribers, but they too have roughly the same ratio of posters to lurkers. I guess I can't really say for sure that nearly all of our subscribers read the digest on a regular basis, but I would imagine that a lot do (or so I'd like to think). :) Jase NP: PJ Harvey, _Rid of Me_ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 01:41:47 -0500 From: palik@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: it's a fruity taste sensation >it would be really funny if liz put out an album of totally NOT-liz covers; >christmas album (wait. does she even have a christmas album?...oh, well, i'm Yeah, songs like: "I saw Mommy xxxxing Santa Claus"... I didn't have a chance to get to the record store to buy it on the release date, so I ended up picking up the CD during my lunch break on Wednesday. Liz's performance of "Never Said" is pretty good, but the recording just doesn't seem to capture the spark of what she's been doing live these days. I do like it, but being someone who attended one of the shows on the Lilith tour, I just think a better recording could have been chosen to represent Liz -- it's just not as powerful as what I remember seeing and hearing. As for the recording itself, Liz's vocals are way up front in the mix and you can hear and distinguish between all of the instruments, although the bass could stand to have a little more presence. The track was mixed by Tom Lord-Alge, who also mixed most of the songs on _whitechocolatespaceegg_. Liz has praised his work on the album quite a bit in the press, and seeing as how he was asked to mix this track as well, I think it's a safe bet that he'll be part of Team Phair for a while. Inside the CD booklet, there's a picture of Liz that was taken from the same sessions as the photos that were used for WCSE's artwork and other publicity shots for the album. As for the rest of the compilation, I'm not really that familiar with many of the artists, so I need to listen more before I can really say much. I've sampled a few tracks, but nothing's really grabbed me yet, with the exception of Luscious Jackson's "Naked Eye", a song that I'm already familiar with and like, which sounds damn good here in its live version. FYI - it's imperial teen (right?) ***** Subject: concert recording -- late april (From: "overpavement") <> I just wanted to let you know you can digitally dub one MD to another MD. The only restriction is that the MD you're dubbing from has to be an original recording. All you need is a digital optical cable to connect the two machines. The only time you can't digitally dub an MD is if the MD you are trying to copy is already a digital clone. For example: Disc A is an original recording from an analog source Disc A --> digitally dub --> Disc B (this works with no problem) Disc B --> digitally dub --> Disc C (this will not work because Disc B is a digital clone) Disc B --> analog dub --> Disc C (this will work and will suffer only slight degradation due to going through a couple extra DA/AD conversions and another round of compression) <> I agree. Cassettes suck compared to MD. Both from an audio quality prespective, a stability perspective (i.e damaged less easily), and convenience (the ability to reorder tracks, delete tracks, name tracks, etc.) And now MD decks are so cheap (around $200 at Best Buy) that everyone doing a lot of home recording or dubbing should have one (or a CDR). I bought my first MD deck probably three years ago and paid $450 for a used one. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. If you didn't get an email from me confirming that you'll be getting an MD and asking for a mailing address, then sorry, your request arrived too late (although a couple of the trades people have offered look interesting and I may not have replied to all of those yet tonight). Two things: - - for future reference, it's a little unfair to do it the way I did, since people on the west coast have, I think, an advantage if they're checking mail at like 10pm Pacific time. People back east are asleep or otherwise occupied... So, there's probably a fairer way to do this than the way I did it, but it's not my fault the digest goes out at midnight (or so) eastern time. - - thanks to everyone who offered to pay postage or whatever (and for not giving me crap about the MD format -- believe it or not, in the past I've had people rag on me about not offering cassettes or CD's, like I'm an elitist or something). I'm not up for collecting 5 checks for $2.45 each, but I appreciate the offers. Anyway, I hope the people who get a copy enjoy it. And PLEASE don't let me see some doofus on ebay offering this show for $50. THAT would piss me off a lot. over ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V2 #148 ************************************
