She kicked a pack-a-day habit pre-Exile, I believe, and since then she's said she wouldn't allow anyone to smoke around her when she was pregnant, doesn't allow her husband to smoke in the house, and would *outlaw* smoking cigarettes if she were president! Marijuana is a different story altogether, however. That brings me to the matter of Liz's voice: it has not gotten lower, it's gotten HIGHER -- a combination of singing lessons and giving up pot. She said once in concert that her voice has gotten higher since she stopped smoking pot. That is, in fact, exactly what happens when you stop after you've "smoked a lot of pot" like Liz did post-Whip-smart, you crackheads. I just wish I'd gone to a Liz show in '95 with a backstage pass -- she got high w/ fans after her L.A. show that year. FYI: Anyone who sees the photo of me & Liz at Ken's site and thinks "Good lord! Not that it's a bad thing. But I have seen some performances (mainly on television) where she wasn't in top form (first perfs of "Poly Bride" on Leno, "Cinco de Mayo" years ago on MTV) but lately, it seems as if she's reached a new level. As far as her early material, I love the singing! That's what drew me to it in the first place! I love singing along to Stratford-on-guy, it's one of the most singable tunes ever! And Blood Keeper is like a combination of Exile and WCSE Liz. The early stuff from Girlysounds and the like that I've heard has this weird quality to it...like she's recording in her bedroom and she's restraining her voice on the extra-passionate lyrics so the neighbors don't call (e.g. "fuck or die(!) fuck or die(!) fuck or die(!)", you can tell by the way it tapers off on "die", "i'm gonna give you head, even if it kills you, i'm gonna give you head, even if you die(!)) or, maybe my imagination is too active--or maybe the lyrics are too embarassing? I think it was in the "Spunk" electronic magazine article, where Liz and Benn Lee interviewed each other, but http://www-personal.usyd.edu.au/~mwoodman/spunk/interviews/lizphair.html no longer functions. Could someone who has a copy check it and email it to me ? The back of Juvenalia says: "all tracks written by liz phair sony tunes", so that may well be that _Sony_ has the Girlysounds masters. Certainly all the tracks on Juvenalia (except Jealousy and Turnig Japanese) are directly from the Girlysounds 4-track master tapes. We want the rest of Girlysounds. We _need_ the rest of Girlysounds. Is there any way we can convince _Sony_ to put out the rest of Girlysounds as a commercial release ? I mean an orchestrated, coordinated effort by all of us on Support System, and whoever's on the old Guyville list, plus whoever else we can muster (even Liz, if anyone can ask her). Goodness knows there are enough of us who'd RUN out to buy a direct-from-the-master-tapes CD set of Girlysounds. Whoever is in charge of deciding "what is likely to make money if released" needs to hear from a whole huge bunch of Liz's fans, all at pretty much the same time. I remember the interview you're refering to, but I don't think Liz gave the masters to Sony; as I recall, she gave them DAT copies of her master tapes. Sony is Liz's publisher, but that's the extent of their involvement with her music. She likely only gave them copies of the tapes to protect her publishing rights for that material, since a lot of those songs have been rerecorded for official releases, and some of those versions themselves were obviously released on the _Juvenilia_ EP. For the longest time, Liz balked at the idea of releasing the Girlysounds officially and said so in a number of interviews, and she would have to give her permission before this were to happen. Luckily, perhaps after hearing them again, she has seemed to have a change of heart. At the Lounge Ax, I had asked her if she had any plans to release more material from the Girlysounds, she said she definitely would like to, but didn't know when it would happen. Of course, there is the possibility that she had meant rerecordings, new studio versions, instead of a release of the Girly Sound recordings themselves. And also of consideration, this was before Matador's split with Capitol, and while I could see Matador getting behind such a project, somehow I can't imagine Capitol showing much interest in or supporting it. A 2-CD set of demos by a marginally-selling artist probably isn't something they'd go out of their way to put out. Of course, if Liz were to start moving *a lot* of units, they'd be more apt to release them, just to get more product out in the marketplace. Ultimately, I think if we do see any official release of the rest of the Girly Sound material, it likely won't come for quite some time, or will gradually happen -- perhaps a few tracks will turn up on any future singles that may be released. Or there's always the inevitable box set about twenty years down the road.... ;) I really would like to see an official release of this material as much as anyone, but I'm just being honest in my doubts that it will happen. We could all try showing our interest in such a project to Capitol, but it may not get us very far. There are about 925 subscribers to this list right now and who knows how many on the Guyville list. I think the only way to get enough people involved would be to see if anyone on alt.fan.liz-phair wants to help out and maybe encourage the visitors to all of the Liz websites to send Capitol an email on the subject. This may not get us anywhere, for all I know, but at the same time, it really wouldn't hurt. Since there's been an ongoing discussion about this, I thought I'd offer up my opinion. Honestly, I too think that the Bliss and Fetish discs are pretty damn good -- for the most part. The songs that sound great on them are excellent (much better than they sound on tapes that are circulating), but by the same token, those that don't sound so good are horrible to listen to. Patrick did a good job of cleaning up most of the tracks; there are, as has been pointed out, several that didn't turn out very well, due to the poor job he did noise filtering them. Two of these songs ("Do You Love Me?" and "Sometimes A Dream") are in much better quality on the Secretly Timid disc, as Ruthie said, which obviously used tapes from a different source. Whenever I make tapes for people of Girly Sound, I always use the Bliss and Fetish discs as the source, with the exception of those two songs, for which I use the cleaner versions from Timid. However, there are a couple of other songs on the Bliss and Fetish discs that don't sound that great that are not on Secretly Timid, but luckily they're not quite as bad as the two mentioned above and are more listenable. Luckily, I have a relatively good set of the Girly Sound tapes, and while songs like "Money" and "Miss Lucy" do have a lot of hiss, at least they don't have that metallic noise on them. Even better is the fact that a friend of mine who is involved with audio production has offered to try to clean up my tapes for me, as soon as he has the time to. If the results turn out to be better that the Bliss and Fetish discs are, I'd be more than happy to get him to burn several sets of CD-Rs of them for list members who would be able to burn copies for others. I can't make any promises as to when this might happen though, but I'll see what I can do. Unfortunately, he's not a Liz fan, otherwise he'd probably be motivated to do it right away. As far as other live pieces, if anyone has heard the Lillith fair cd, "Never Said" is on it(i think originally, it was supposed to be "Stratford") anyway it's a good live version. Is it just me or do you guys notice that liz tends to sometimes rush thru songs live? I remember the first time i saw her, (which was Oct) she did "Johnny Feelgood" in record time. I noticed a difference though in her slowing down or just not rushing as much when I saw her in April at Mt.Holyoke. Also, has anyone ever seen her do "Headache" live- it is one of my all-time favorites and she never does it. Has she ever? What about the rest of the 2nd half of WCSE, it seems that except for "what makes you happy" she doesn't touch the rest of that part of the album live. I wish she would, and also "only son". As many of you guys said in the past, seeing her live this tour playing lots of EIG definitely got me back into it, such a great album, "strange loop, divorce song", etc.I've got that in my cd player in my room and WCSE in the tape deck inthe car. SMOKIN'!!!!!!!!!--Is it the consensus that Liz was (and possibly still is secretly) a smoker? I think it's safe to say yes, she probably did quit during her pregnancy though. And we KNOW she likes to smoke the funky stuff. (and talk about it) I think that is one thing about her that I always thought was cool- how she was about that. Not that I mean she 's cool cos she does/did that, but she doesn't need to be about it, y'know like Cypress Hill style. She's casual, that;s cool. So Hole? Lillith? Anyone know of any dates, is it too early? As much as I love Hole I have a hard time believing they would play Lillith or Courtney would hold back from getting in a fight w/someone especially Lauryn Hill if she did it- that would be funny! Go Court! Anyway, I heard she fired the drummer who's name has just escaped me-what was that about? Also did anyone from the list see Hole last night 5/18 at roseland? I wanted to go it was my birthday, too , but it sold out (I thought I was getting tix for my bday so i didn't buy them) can't go tonite, cos i'm seeing Built to Spill at Maxwell's. if anyone went how was it, what did she play? I'm more interested in older tunes. Lastly, I AGREE (to the hundredth power) with jason- people should not profit or take advantage from/of our love for liz's music that is pretty greedy and wrong, why should they profit from her creativity, they didn't write the songs and burning a CD is like the easiest thing in the world to do, and very non-time consuming. that's it for me , "I'm winning, spinning" " i'm a big tall man i cut the grass(not) my left eye hurts" "I CAN be a complicated communicator", so why am i a COMM major?
