Paul, There are a number of songs on GS that are of a much lower quality than other tracks - these include Sometimes A Dream, Shane, Six Dick Pimp, & If I Ever Pay You Back. Patrick attempted to reduce the excessive tape hiss by digitally filtering it out... but there's a limit to the amount you can remove without replacing it with a 'metallic' sound. I've replicated this phenomenon by accident myself using CoolEdit software. I eventually resampled them from my own tape copy and left the tape hiss in. If you get Patrick's copy you can remove much of the distortion by reducing the treble slightly. You may not like that option if you're a purist but its a relatively effective workaround. Until a much lower generation copy appears rest assured that you are listening to the same quality girlysound as Liz herself. chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 12:44:27 +0200 (MET DST) From: Tim Wallyn Subject: Supernova Single For anyone in Los Angeles who may be interested: They're selling two copies of a beautiful single called Supernova by one Liz Phair at Benway Music. That's on 1600 Pacific Ave., Venice (310-3968865) The single has Combo Platter on b-side, and the vinyl is blue transparent. I don't know if this is regular or special edition, but it looks magic. When I was there, they had two copies left, one at $2.50 and the other one slightly over $3.00. That's a sort of mistake, because both copies are exactly the same. Maybe you should mention that to the guy at the counter. I'm sorry now that I didn't (and took the third copy that was there, at $2.50). Also at the same record store, they're selling a huge amount of rare CDs extremely cheap. Jason, if you read this far, better skip the next line. It's a little annoying that the titles on the back don't contrast well enough with the dark background, making them a little difficult to read, but hey, come on now, people. I say, if you're tired of messing with your tapes, buy the B & F disks. Really, they're fine. And the one other person with whom I've discussed the quality of the CDs (the guy for whom I made tapes of it) agreed with me, so I don't think I'm completely out in left field on this one. Liz got into her car and was 5ft in front of me at the time, wow!she looked soooo pretty in person, and also tiny(shorter than at roseland) and thin! she had these awesome lime green leather pants on during the taping. Also for pj harvey fans, she did a sessions taping this past year (98) as well, i don't know when they are airing it though-hopefully soon- that should be awesome! someone asked if liz smokes- I think yes at some point, or perhaps just not a chainsmoker- "A beer and a cigarette"- BIg Tall Man I think I read an interview where she was smoking a cigarette, but i don't know if she does now. First of all, I will not allow people to sell bootlegs on the list for profit. No one who is a big enough fan of Liz to be on this list should be trying to profit off of other fans, and I really think this is nothing more than ripping them off. There are many people here who would be more than happy to make copies for other list members for only the cost of blanks and postage. Trading is also cool, and we have done several tape trees in the past as well. Secondly, please do not post URLs or email addresses for those who are selling bootlegs (those who are trading are cool, though); if people really want to find these items, they can do it on their own. Really, they'd be better off trying to get a copy from another list member. These bootleg sellers should not be making a profit off of Liz's work and by buying from them, you're allowing them to. Sure, many think they should get a little something for their time and effort, but it doesn't take that long to burn a CD, depending on how fast your CD-R drive is, and it's not like it's that time-intensive, since they can do other things at the same time as making the CDs. Also, there are many list members who are willing to take the time to do this service for others for free. The sellers are just blantantly trying to make a fast buck. I don't see other real fans, such as Ken Lee and those on this list, doing this. I know that some people may disagree with my stance, so let me explain how I came to it. Many of you will remember that Brad Wood was on our list for several months a while back. When he first subscribed, I was worried about all of the trading and tape trees that were discussed openly on the list and how he might feel about it, being someone who works with Liz and is close to her. I decided to ask him point-blank about the issue, to see if such things were okay. He responded that he felt that it was the ultimate compliment to an artist to have such a loyal and interested fanbase, and that Liz does appreciate her fans devotion a lot, but that trades from fan to fan were the way to go -- while he believed that to be cool with Liz, he felt that the purchase of bootlegs wasn't. Also, as KB mentioned on the list recently, when I met Liz at MuchMusic in Toronto last fall, I gave her copies of the Girly Sound tapes. I had read in an article in Alternative Press where she had said that she wasn't even sure if she could still find her copies, so I was inspired to make her a set of them, on the off-chance that I would meet her or find a way to get them to her somehow. I felt that for all that she'd given me through her music (which has gotten me through a lot of rough times), it would be a nice way to try to give something back. She was really appreciative when I gave the tapes to her -- her face lit up and she seemed quite excited to be receiving them. After scanning the track listings, she told me that I had no idea how much she appreciated getting the tapes, since she couldn't find hers (she mentioned that she believes that they are probably lost somewhere in her closet, and from the way she talked, it sounds like she has a lot of other tapes stored there too). She was also curious about how easy it was to get Girly Sound copies and if I'd had to pay for mine. I told her that for the most part, fans were willing to make copies for other fans (which is totally in the spirit of their original distribution). She seemed to think that this was cool, and she had actually seemed a little concerned when she'd asked me if I had to buy my copies. Based on all of this, I'd have to assume that she is cool with the distribution of bootlegs, but doesn't look too kindly on her fans being ripped off. One thing that was cool was that, having given her the tapes, when I saw her again at the Lounge Ax in March, it gave me an excuse to go talk to her the first time I did that night. She had played "Wild Thing" during the show and had also said, on-stage, that people were always asking her if she was pissed about bootlegs but that she was cool with them because people would then have a record of all this stuff, looking at me the whole time while she said it (I hadn't been sure if she'd noticed that I was taping the show or if she recognized me from Toronto, or both). When I approached her afterwards, I asked her if she had enjoyed the tapes and she did recognize me and said she'd been happy to hear all those songs again. Okay, so I kind of veered slightly off-topic there, but I do realize I haven't posted much about either my Toronto or Lounge Ax experiences, so I thought I would while I was on the subject (I'll try to post more soon, I know I've been holding out on everyone). Also, for anyone who didn't see them when I posted the URLs before, I have scanned and uploaded two of the pictures I took of Liz at MuchMusic. They can be found at: http://www.bconnex.net/~jase/lizphair/gallery/liz_toronto_102098_1.jpg http://www.bconnex.net/~jase/lizphair/gallery/liz_toronto_102098_2.jpg In both, you can see Liz holding onto the Girly Sound dubs I made her. :) And for the record, that Bliss and Fetish WCSE demo disc is just the demos portion of the '96 Shelved Demos/Studio Recordings tape. I wouldn't count on it being of very good quality, as I have no clue what generation his tape is. I know I didn't make his copy for him, and for those who remember back that far, I was the one who started the distribution of the tape through a couple of tape trees on the list, after I got my copy from a secret source. The quality of the tape could have been better to begin with (it's quite bass-heavy) and I don't imagine this CD-R bootleg sounds all that great if it's from a tape more than a couple of generations down the line from my own. If people really want this material on CD, Ken Lee has included the 'Studio' part of the tape on disc one of the WCSE Sessions CDs he is making, and your best bet for the 'Demos' would be to find someone who got a copy of the tape directly from me who can burn a CD-R for you. I'd offer to do this myself, but I don't have CD burning capabilities yet. I am, however, more than happy to make tape copies for those who want them. I'm sorry if anyone disagrees with me on this issue, but I don't think anyone should have to pay to hear any of this material. It's just not necessary.
