Hey guys... well I'm procrastinating on a paper right now (the last one of my freshman year at college! Woo hoo!) so I thought I would take the time to post some info that I've had for a few days now. I went to the NYU show and (as I posted awhile ago) had an amazing time. Now for the new stuff. One of the girls that lives on my floor in my dorm works for the NYU program board, which means she goes to the concerts and organizes stuff or whatever...I'm not really sure. Anyway, I saw her at the show, and the day after the concert I ran into her in the dorm. She asked me if I liked the show and of course I said yes, and asked her what she thought. She proceeded to say "Liz Phair is a bitch!" Now, of course I asked her what the fuck she was talking about (in nicer terms I believe), and she told me a list of complaints about what Liz had done at the NYU show. Some of the stuff she said was that Liz didn't show up for soundcheck, she arrived only 20 minutes before she was supposed to go on, she made a big deal about asking for her own dressing room and then didn't use it, and she requested some certain incense and candles and then took them with her when she left.... (I think there was more but I don't remember exactly.) So then I asked her if she met Liz, and she said that she got the chance to because they were standing in the hallway together but by that time she didn't even want to. I was like, Um, okay.... So I just shrugged and told her that I thought the show rocked and left it at that. So what do you guys think about all that? I don't really want to believe that Liz was acting like Mariah Carey with PMS or something, but I'm sure this girl wasn't making it up, so who knows. But hell, who wouldn't take cool incense and candles with them.... And maybe she was just running late....there was probably a lot of traffic.... I'm sure Liz wouldn't do anything intentionally bitchy! At least I hope not. Well I gotta go do this paper, and this was a pretty long post, sorry about that. Just wanted to share the gossip! ~Emily ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 01:04:29 -0500 (CDT) From: kenmlee@ix.netcom.com (Kenneth Lee) Subject: Re: pay attention ken lee - WHO ARE THESE WANNABE'S? So I encourage any of you Milwaukee people on the list to come and support independent music. It's gonna be a blast! It's lasts from 5PM - 1AM on May 21 at the Rave in Milwaukee Tickets are only 10 bucks. Just thought I'd pass this info along. DAVIS" Subject: Cinco de Mayo Revisited Thought I'd pass this along so you can amaze/bore your friends, It's from an El Paso writer, Guadalupe Silva. Why Mexican-Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo more than the 16 de Septiembre has always been a mystery to most Mexicans. While nobody doubts its significance in Mexican history, Cinco de Mayo is not a major holiday in Mexico. Winning a battle while losing the war is hardly cause for a big celebration. It certainly is not the War of Independence, which is celebrated on the dieciseis. But it was a victory of sorts and one worth noting. On that day, May 5, 1862, the ragtag army of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the crack French troops headed by Charles Letrille, Count of Lorencz, in Puebla. Zaragoza's troops numbered a little more than 2000 and were poorly armed. Lorencz had a well-armed combat-ready force of more than 5000. Unfortunately, Zaragoza died in September of that same year with typhoid fever and the momentum of the war changed. Still, it would take the French another year and 28,000 troops to enter Mexico City and take control of the central government. After fleeing the French invasion, then-President Benito Juarez sought refuge on the US-Mexico border, establishing his provisional Republican government in what was then Paso del Norte, later to be called Cuidad Juarez. It was Aug. 28, 1864. By January of 1866, except for a few pockets along the border, Mexico was under the rule of Emperor Maximilian and the French. But following his defeats in Europe, Napoleon decided the cost of keeping a government in Mexico was too high and called for his troops to return to France. With the French invasion over and the war ended, President Juarez returned to Mexico City on July 15, 1867. Some historians note that if Napoleon had not lost the war in Europe and stayed the course in Mexico, Mexicans would now be speaking French. They, of course, would not be celebrating the Cinco De Mayo with a parade and big street festival. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- It's pretty obvious which holiday Liz prefers and why. It's not easy to find something which rhymes with Septiembre. I told my blond niece that I was hanging out in Mesilla on Cinco de Mayo and she asked me when that was. This was on the third of May. I've got to unsub shortly for the summer since I'm not taking any classes and can't count on keeping my college account. I'm probably be back in the fall, if nothing else to bitch about not getting my CDs from Ken. If you see a goofy Austin Powers/Garry Shandling looking-guy at Lillith this summer, feel free to say hi. Liz is a Beth Orton fan. Makes me happy. Allrighty then. I attended Friday’s, Saturday’s, and Sunday’s show. She looked like a schoolgirl Friday, a vamp Saturday, and a very sexy nightclub singer on Sunday. All perfect. I ended up front row for all three shows (wasn’t hard at WPI; I didn’t even arrive until 10 minutes before she hit the stage), and I only had to sit through David Mead once. Sorry, that band was in no way appealing. I have said that Don’t Apologize rocked. At first listen, it does. Well, at second and third listen it does too, in fact. But my favorite by far is Firewalker. I didn’t know the lyrics before I got there, but even if I had, that in no way compares to hearing her sing them. This is one great fucking song. I cannot wait to get a copy of it. Who’s got one? I loved the songs she sang without the guitar. Like Mesmerizing. And Support System. Lots of arm movements and dancing. Moving around onstage, acting out the words--particularly in Support System. Not to be a retard, but she and I actually dance the same way! When she holds her hands together in front of her and sort of sways in a snaky-like way ... And though I can’t remember if she didn’t have her guitar on or if she just wasn’t playing it, during Seven Veils, when she sings “throw you up and pump you full of lead,” she actually shot three shots out her finger, pulsing her thumb like the top of a gun with each shot. Kinda basic, but it was captivating to me. And during “I am gonna get your heavy head” she holds her arms out like she’s got a platter with his head on it. And Flower. Sorry, every time I hear this I can’t get over it. She SINGS the lyrics, doesn’t just SAY them. Her voice is awesome, so much better than I thought it could be. Yeah, it seems she has been taking voice lessons. She even hit most of the high notes in Seven Veils. I guess I like it. But Flower. She really, really sings that like she means it. And after every “ohmygod” reaction from the audience (“blowjob queen,” “ramming in me,” etc.) at the end of a line, she smiles, then usually closes her eyes and doesn’t miss a beat, just vaults herself into the next line with visual sexual fervor like I have never ... well, I just have never. But you can see it on her face. Her outfit was fantastic. The tight black skirt was half black fabric, half black netting. If you looked at her straight on, the netting was a huge see-through triangle on the right side of her skirt. And her shirt was so similar to the skirt that I thought it was a dress. Her hair was in a ponytail, yes, but with deliberate strands pulled out to hang down in the front. I don’t think I have ever described a person in such detail. It makes me uncomfortable! Next! The epilogue to my liz weekend is that our car got locked in the garage we parked at in Providence ... it closed at fucking eleven ... we tripped the alarm (but no one even came--duh--thank god we weren’t really in trouble) trying to sneak in to at least get our stuff out of the car ... went back to Lupo’s ... ended up deciding to rent a hotel room at the Biltmore, which was kinda cool since Liz was no doubt staying there ... but we put the Amex on the counter, all set to pay $100 for the cheapest room, and the desk clerk was like, oh, your car is in the garage? do you want me to call and ask them to unlock it? um, yes, please! So we got home, Katie, yes we did. The upside of the whole debacle is that b/c we were hanging out outside the club looking for a way home, we got to see Liz leave. I was too distracted to try and worm my way in for an autograph, but saw people whose tickets were signed. Then she just walked by and waved and said thanks, though. No biggie. And Nicole, I didn’t know that was you she was talking to in Worcester! Cool! My friend and I drove up to the entrance after the show, but we didn’t see you. Oh yeah ... looks like her toenails are in fact lilac, not white ... does anyone care??? Also, Kevin, the guitar guy, when he came out with her water bottle, he told the guy next to me: “If she sips her water and then puts it down with the cap off, do her a favor and PUT THE CAP ON because otherwise she’ll spill it.” I thought that was kinda cute. oh, one more cute thing ... Liz has this thing she does where she throws her arms up, hands clasped, and just stretches while full-on facing the audience. The audience always hoots--it's pretty sexy--and you can tell she does it just to get a rise out of them. She rocks, liz does. I think I'm set for now. - -sandra- _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yes, I've been thinking about songs to scream at Liz to play at shows...More than a few of us in DC tried unsuccessfully for Blood Keeper, Bars of the Bed, Jealousy et.al. - but May Queen was requested and subsequently played...There is hope! I will definitely be requesting Go West at the Crowbar (State College, PA) show tomorrow night (real time), and I may try for Carnivore (does she ever play this?) Nicole - good try for Stuck On An Island - I would have been quite jealous if she had brought that one out... Also, someone was like "don't believe the hype" on the new Star Wars movie...all I have to say is check out the video they've been playing on MTV and VH1 the last couple of days...I'm not a Sci-Fi freak, but the new movie promises to be incredible because all of the major elements (actors, director, special effects work, soundtrack) are at the height of their respective fields - in other words, G.
