I'm in Spanish-speaking mode -- went to a VERY fun Cinco de Mayo party last night... bambaleo! Boy, no sooner do I post a Chicago Liz Phest update than it's announced that Liz is playing Lilith in Detroit! At this point, we're still gonna do Chicago (July 9-10-11), but I think it's a great idea for listers to meet up in Detroit as well. For those of you who have e-mailed me, I'll get Chicago details to you soon. I'd like to attend Lilith in Detroit myself... we'll see (hint, hint, my Detroit-area friend!) I stumbled on a wire service album review in my local Sunday paper that mentions Liz. Thought I'd share -- what do y'all think of this? ~~~~~start~~~~~ review of: "Tongue" by Penelope Houston (Reprise) 2 1/2 out of 4 stars On the cover of Penelope Houston's "Tongue," the singer-songwriter is holding a microphone like she's wielding a weapon. Fitting posture for a woman who pens songs with titles such as "My Angel Lost Her Wings" and "Frankenstein Heart" and pitches out lines like "You're the worst mistake God has ever made" (on "Scum"). Houston's lyrical bite compensates for her sometimes crude music stylings, a predominately punk/folk hybrid akin to Liz Phair. And the former Avengers lead singer doesn't have a voice much better than Phair's, though she copes with a biting attitude and chameleonic shifts in genres. On the downside, the singer clings to dated punk and New Wave sensibilities from her late '70s roots, and the dorky folk song "Frankenstein Heart" is an embarrassment. Still, "Tongue" delivers some mean licks. Chuck Campbell, The Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel ~~~~~end~~~~~ Anybody ever heard of Penelope Houston? Have this album? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Why? Cuz maybe Capitol will actually > promote her albums now! Don't count on it. LP has been a big fish in a little pond her whole career. Now she's in one of the bigger seas, competing with the likes of Beastie Boys, Garth Brooks, Meredith Brooks, and their newest artist, Lisa Marie Presley for promo dollars. Hell, Paul Westerberg has had more of an influence than LP (no disrespect intended), and Capitol doesn't promote him for shit. I think that while distribution may be better for her now, there will be less promotion and tour support money. Because Capitol is a corporation, run by corporate weasels who look only to the bottom line. And even 900 e-mails to them won't change their plans or outlook. Personally, I think it was a bad move for the long-term haul for her to move to a major label. But at least it wasn't Universal. Those people are just downright rude and evil. The only highlight of my night last night was getting to see Liz. I ended up making the drive down by myself to see her. So I did the whole wait-around-until-you-want-to-kill-the-doorguy thing and finally got in. When I got in, I managed to get in about two people from center. So I stood there and talked to a few people (one of the people I talked to knew my boyfriend's best friend!) and waited for David Mead to start. Well, I was not really too impressed with his Cherrie Poppin' Daddies-lookin', Matchbox 20-soundin' self. Considering the absolute blandness of him, I'm sure we'll be seeing him on MTV sometime soon. So by the end of his LOOOONG opening act, my legs were aching, I was pissed and I wanted a cigarette. I was so tempted to leave, but I fought the urge and grabbed a spot on one of the big cushy couches in the back. So this will probably be the FIRST EVER review given on this list by someone who was not pressed against the stage. Well, first off, Liz looked slammin', obviously. It was enough to make me confirmed bi. I won't say anymore than that. She had a wicked cute teeny tiny tank top on, and her hair was in a ponytail. I didn't see what else she was wearing..:) One of the sad things about sitting in the back. She amazed me with her guitar playing. She and her band were very tight, and I saw none of the stage-fright that plagued her earlier shows. Lucky for all of us!! But, I was a bit confused. She sounds like she's been taking singing lessons, and that was a bit depressing. Her monotone voice was one of the things that totally attracted me to her in the first place. The highlight of the show for me was definitely "Flower." Not only is it a kick-ass song, but the way she sang it made it stop seeming like it was the secretary from hell who was having these thoughts, but Liz herself. She sang it kinda girly, kinda high, kinda sweetly, but you didn't doubt for a second that she totally wanted that guy. Well, this is a bit long, but I'm still so stoked from the show that I am blabbing. But that's no excuse, so I'm shutting up now. I do remember reading an early article at Ken's site where she had a cat. >^ . . ^< Ohki, anyone live in the Detroit area? I'm looking into hotels and whatnot for a place to stay during Lilith. I'm not getting anywhere with my search tonight, please email me and possibly we could work something out to room up everyone. Oh yay! Sheryl Crow mentioned Liz during her interview on MTV's Total Request Live! She said something about how Sarah McLachlan calls her to join Lilith every year and she couldn't miss it this year. Why? Something like how there's a good group of female artists on the show like Liz Phair. I didn't catch the other artists she mentioned cuz I was screaming my head off. Oh shoot! I've been missing my dosage of MrE! Where's MrE?! MrE! MrE! Where are you? We need some help from you now... MrE MrE.... lalala etching a sketch, KL ();) Party hardy! CINCO DE MAYO! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 19:32:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig King Subject: liz's guitar If anyone could help me out I'd really appreciate it. I need to find out anything I can about Liz's yellow/off-white Fender Duo-Sonic guitar. I need to find out the year, color, ect... It's hard to tell is it is off white or yellow. I need to know about her Duo-Sonic guitar and NOT her red body Musicmaster guitar. If anyone knows this info or where I could find out this info, I'd really appreciate it. The reason I ask is because I love the way it sounds and I'm looking into getting another guitar. I'd love to get that guitar model. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! My tour schedual consisting of playing my guitar in front of every liqour store I can. A face first dive into the empty concrete pool of humility. My set includes all my original stuff, but I plan to ethier open or close with a Liz phair song every time I play. My question to you out there is.
