(let me say it again) WOW! When I saw the Millersville show last Thursday, I commented to a friend of mine that my fondest wish was that the next two Liz concerts I'd be able to see (9:30 club in DC and Bohager's in Baltimore) would be *half* as good. Millersville was, bar none, the finest concert I'd ever seen... Until tonight, that is. I got to the club at about 6:30, and met with Tad and Mary (from the list) to give them their tickets. After waiting about an hour, or so, we got in. We managed to get *right* up front - directly in front of center stage. David Mead sort of surprised me. I was expecting him to be a whole lot worse than he was. They were pretty solid musicians, and the songs weren't bad. It was certainly head-and-shoulders better than the opening act in Millersville. Then again, this wasn't why most of us were there.. Once he finished his set (about 45 minutes, +/-), Liz came out - and people went wild. She was standing about four feet away (give or take) and, as before, she was simply lovely: green leather pants, a black tube-top kind of thing and actual shoes (black), as opposed to the sneakers at Millersville. The sound was top-notch, and the band was very much together. The set list on the stage was identical to the ones we've been seeing from UMN, ENC, Millersville, etc - about fourteen songs, with the two new ones thrown in for good measure. This time, though, she significantly veered away from the set list. I think this had a lot to do with the audience, which was *extremely* into the show. I think this did some good things for the band, which seemed to be enjoying themselves. The *HUGE* highlight for me was when I shouted out a request for May Queen (my favorite). Liz not only looked at me and heard me, but smiled and *answered*. To top it off, she even played it ... solo. She did pretty well, but ended up messing up the final verses. She went back and played 'em over again, though. I can't tell you all how exciting that was! I think they ended up playing at least four or five more songs than were on the setlist. Folks in the audience requested Support System. The band launched into it even though Liz didn't have a guitar on, and Buddy hadn't tuned up appropriately (according to the roadie). Buddy basically improvised the whole thing, and did a wonderful job. He's a pretty exceptional guitarist. The whole band is pretty exceptional. Anyway, we waited around for a while - but didn't see Liz (at least I didn't). We did have a chance to talk to the guitar roadie - who told us, among other things, that Liz, as he put it, "couldn't even pick out which amp was hers onstage." She's pretty hands-off - they put a tuned guitar in her hands, she makes magic. It's a simple equation. This was a wonderful show - even greater for meeting a bunch of the folks from the list. I'm really looking forward to the Bohager's show, even if my schedule is going to be ugly as a result. Now if I could only work out the logistics of getting to the Crowbar show... Take care- CHL ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 23:14:07 PDT From: tommyk7@excite.com Subject: LIZ@9:30...Oh My God... Let me begin by saying...SHIT!!! This was a show that was truly AMAZING... Let's begin with Liz, wearing a strapless black top with dark green leather pants (which outlined her derriere quite nicely I must say), two-inch heel sandals (which were so cool they HAD to be Euorpean), a choker-necklace and another hanging loosely below it...her hair hanging shoulder-length with two single braids falling on either side...well, she looked great, as always...and she was wielding a red-and-white guitar...She opened with Chopsticks, and although I can't remember the setlist in order, she sang: Johnny Feelgood, Never Said, Flower, Mesmerizing, Cinco de Mayo, Glory, Only Son, Uncle Alverez, Don't Apologize, Firewalker, May Queen, Support-System, Supernova, Polyester Bride, Fuck And Run, WCSE, Stratford-on-Guy, and Divorce Song...SHE PLAYED SUPPORT-SYSTEM...AAAGGHHH!!! AND MAY QUEEN!!! I still can't believe it!!! Mesmerizing was absolutley incredible because it was played much slower than the album version - very intimate...Johnny Feelgood was extended with an awesome guitar jam...and Support-System seemed to be on a whim - because she said something like, "yeah, let's do it" right before...May Queen was a HUGE surprise and the two "new" songs were great as well...I was near the front row (as were other 'listers'), and I was elated when I grasped her hand TWICE near the beginning of her set when she strolled down near the fans...and although our screams for "Shatter," "Blood Keeper," "Bars on the Bed," et. al. were unheard under the din of the crowd, Liz was receptive (is that a word?) to the DC faithful, at ease with her band on stage and talkative between songs...Many people from the list were there and it was great hanging out before and during the show...we had a "posse" of rabid fans near the front row which made it a Liz "frenzy" of sorts...a new high for me, anyways... Music is all relative. No matter how much you hate a song, there's someone who likes it, or else it would have never been written. No one artist can say they're better than any other artist. Every artist/band has his/her/its own target fan base. To say that you are superior to another is incorrect and vain, especially during an interview and in front of press. It is a very bold statement and you'd have better be liked by everyone on the planet to say something like. Saying stupid things during an interview is what I think is really dumb, then again stupidity is also relative, there's always someone dumber than you. By the way, Liz Phair IS my favourite singer, so your last question doesn't apply. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 02:47:20 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Liz will be at Lilith this year... according to an article I found on the Addicted to Noise site about the tour. At 10:49 PM 4/25/1999 PDT, "Bad Dreams" wrote: >First of all, Barbara Manning, who the fuck is Barbara Manning? No >seriously who is she? Sounds like 60-year-old politician/tightass. Barbara Manning is an excellent singer/songwriter who has never quite gotten her due. She's been writing and recording for over a decade now, both solo and in various indie bands. Her solo releases _Lately I Keep Scissors_ and _1212_ are both great, although not easy to find. As for Barbara's comments, while they look quite damaging on their own, did you ever stop to think of the context they were made in? I wouldn't be surprised if she said what she did out of frustration. Rock journalists tend to pit female artists against one another (as Liz has said in some interviews), and they quite often do so by making invalid comparisons. I've seen a few pieces where writers have unfairly compared the two, seemingly just because they are both female, both play guitar, are both indie artists and had been recording for the same label (Manning is no longer signed to Matador). Really, their music doesn't have much in common and I can see why Manning might get a little pissed, especially when it's repeatedly pointed out how much better Liz's records sell than her own. While she is quite talented, she just doesn't attract the same amount of attention. >Second of all, Courtney Love, reminds me of a... what do you call it? >Oh yeah Crackwhore slut, who is only where she is right now because >of Kurt Cobain. Shes needs a few more plastic surgery procedures >before she says anything about anyone. Crackwhore slut? I would have guessed that most of us left name-calling behind in about the third grade. If you can't argue with someone's opinion without resorting to such tactics, you seriously need to consider growing up a little. Only where she is right now because of Kurt? I don't think so. It seems quite obvious to me that Courtney was going to be successful with or without him, and in some ways, I do believe her marriage to Kurt hindered her career. No doubt his connections helped her, but she already had the talent. She was idle for a great part of their marriage, when she could have been working on her music or pursuing any other projects she chose to. Courtney was clearly very ambitious and was going to go places. She was already signed to Caroline when she met Kurt, and given what happened to Nirvana, she would have likely gotten signed to a major without him. Once Nirvana exploded, all the majors were snatching up indie acts and signing them, hoping to cash in; if Hole hadn't ended up signing to DGC, there were other labels who were interested in the band that they could have signed with, including Maverick. Also, part of where Courtney is now has to do with her acting ability, as she's no longer working just in music, but in films. And that's nothing that Kurt could have helped her with at all. That's a talent she developed all on her own. Another question for you: What does plastic surgery have to do with anything? Are you saying that it's wrong for people to have such procedures done? Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it, if someone's doing it for themselves and not to live up to some beauty standard imposed on them by society. If there were something I didn't like about myself and I had the money to change it, I wouldn't hesitate, and that's exactly what Courtney did. She didn't like her nose because it looked like that of her father, whom she dislikes, so she had it changed. Big deal. And if having other work done was something that made her happy, that's cool too. About Courtney not saying whatever she wants, what the hell is your problem? She was just expressing an opinion, like anyone else could. That's all it was, her opinion. Are you saying that she's not entitled to have one just because you happen to disagree with it? Why should she be any different than anyone else? >I proposed we ban all "artists" who bash Liz, have shitlists on your >websites, don't buy their albums even if you want to, just to get them >back. And as I just said above, it was only Courtney's opinion she was expressing and she's entitled to think whatever she wants. We don't go around disassociating ourselves with our friends and relatives who don't like Liz, so why should we ban other artists who just happen to not like her either? So Courtney said that Liz is as boring as a potato (that's the full quote, by the way). Big deal. Maybe Liz's music just genuinely doesn't do anything for her. Is that so hard to believe? Think of all the people you know who don't like Liz; her music obviously isn't quite to everyone's taste. And while I think it's really "cute" that you feel the need to defend Liz against big, bad Courtney Love and other artists who happen to not like her work, why not just respect their opinion for what it is? Honestly, you're making such a big deal over what probably means nothing to Liz herself. If she heard those quotes, I can't believe she'd really care that much or get nearly as worked up about it as you did. She'd likely be more apt to just say, "So?" A while back we had a thread about how just because Liz likes certain artists like Alanis, it doesn't mean that her fans are going to necessarily like them as well. During that thread, it was stated a few times that just because Liz makes good music herself doesn't mean that her own taste in music is necessarily quite as distinguished. During that same thread, I had said that if Liz happened to dislike an artist I love, it wouldn't change how I felt about that artist's music. So, why should we let what other artists think of Liz affect how we feel about their work? It's all just a matter of personal taste and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Take it with a grain of salt. Joni Mitchell bashes just about every songwriter out there right now. Does this mean that I should stop listening to her music, which I love very much? Hell no. While I don't agree with a lot of her comments, I also am not going to cut myself off from her work because of them. >I've done my part, anyone want some pirated Hole mp3s? No, I prefer supporting the artists whose music I love by buying their commercially available releases. And while it may be out of line, if I catch anyone on this list doing what you're suggesting, I will unsub them. If you have absolutely NO intention of buying an artist's work but have mp3 files of it, you're keeping royalties from them that are rightfully theirs. And as a music lover, I can't just sit by and do nothing about that. And while you think it's cool to do that to Hole just because of what Courtney said, wouldn't you be pissed if someone else did the same thing to Liz? >Oh yeah, what's with Jewel? She's trying be rip Liz off or something. >Anyone see her new video? She's playing an electric guitar... Plenty of female musicians were playing electric guitar before Liz. Does that mean Liz is ripping them off? If so, someone better tell Chrissie Hynde and Joan Jett to call their lawyers. >Liz is the only female folk singer who's allowed to play an electric. I wasn't aware that Liz was a "female folk singer". Was there some sort of press release I missed? Damn. And, yeah, "6'1"" and "Supernova" are such great folk songs; why they sound just like early Dylan! Why hadn't I noticed that before? >I think Jewel just ran out of cutesy musical ideas, so she's trying to >steal some material. Maybe she just genuinely likes picking up an electric guitar once in a while. Lots of people do. Why is it so hard to believe? And she's much more of a purist - she would never write a song just because she thought it would make a good single, and her sense of humor is much darker. And, she would never open for Alanis or play Lilith Fair, either. I do like a lot of Barbara Manning's music..(although - god damn if she's pretty bloody slow at releasing it) but if she really did say that comment about Liz, I think my opinion of her slipped a notch. She is a very decent songwriter - but all this bad mouthing is such bullshit. Everyone is entitled to "dislike" Liz..but when other artists have the gall to announce to the world how much "BETTER" they are than someone - it bothers me in a big way. Shame she can't recognize and RESPECT Liz Phair for all she's done - especially for women in music. It sucks, I mean, to me, I find that the whole Indie music scene is slipping a bit. IT used to be really small,(but small on a big scale..eheh get it?) and really tight. Now, half of it is just considered "mainstream" (not that the music changed, just the fact that the crowd's opinion changed) and the other half is literally getting lost in all the hoopla bullshit. She went through the songs pretty fast and was done her set in about an hour and twenty minutes. I can't wait to see her next week in Baltimore. I'll post again after that show. I went to that show. She came on 45 minutes late. Did anyone else do? I came about 15 of 8 and some other band was playing. They were OK. That was actually my first time hearing Liz Phair. I found out about her (sorta) around when whitechocolatespaceegg came out. I thought she was Sheryl Crow when I first saw her picture. Anyway, the concert was free, and I totallly enjoyed it. Now I have to convince my mom to let me get that CD. Anyway, she sang "F*** and Run," and "Love is Nothing" and lots of other stuff, but I can't remember the titles. 3 encores! She was great. I look forward to hearing about her. Oh my god. One of the best experiences of my life was last night finally seeing Liz herself. i just kept saying to my friend "She's real, I can't believe it'" She looked wonderful and radiant and beautiful. Great show!!! We even requested Support System. :) Ok. Just thought I would share with the digest. The 9:30 club was sold out so there were about five hundred people there (I'm guessing). Liz wore this black tube top and dark green leather pants. She is so beautiful!!! She looked so relaxed and happy on stage...even more so than she did when she was here in october. Liz was laughing and talking to the crowd, and at one point she leaned down to touch people's hands. She's deninately kicked her stage fright. She played basically the same songs as everywhere else so I won't post the setlist (and someone else probably will post it anyway) BUT she did play mayqueen - just liz and her guitar while the rest of the band kinda watched. She said before she started it that she loved playing it but that she could never get it right....and then she kinda messed up the guitar parts in the middle... Oh! and there were two really nice guys next to me and my friends. They gave liz some flowers at the beginning of the show (hi if you're on the list!) Firewalker and Don't appoligize better be on whatever album liz puts out next! They are both really great songs...and much different from anything on WCSE. They sound much tougher than anything on WCSE.. they're more like her older stuff. I liked Firewalker better just because I couldn't make out all the lyrics to Don't Apoligize...But still, both songs were amazing. Did anybody record the show? if you did, email me and we can trade stuff - -Stacey ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 18:19:11 -0400 (EDT) From: Syrup@concentric.net Subject: liz at lilith! yaaah!!! just noticed this today after being incredibly disappointed yesterday...
