I have a bad memory. 3 setlists were handed out so hopefully someone on the list got one. I noticed her backup singer got better. She sounds more in tune with what liz is doing now. What else.. grey fuzzy hat with ear flaps, tight black top, sequined skirt, black skintight pants, black funky open toed shoes. She was freezing and kept dancing about to keep warm. She also told us a story about how whenever some idiot in a band would screw her over she's imagine razors under the frets so he would slit his fingers open as he played. I found that amusing. I don't think she signed any autographs.. we waited, but only about 10 minutes then got too cold and went drinking in the dorms. This is a rant in reference to the above message, where Liz gets bashed. First of all, Barbara Manning, who the fuck is Barbara Manning? No seriously who is she? Sounds like 60-year-old politician/tightass. Second of all, Courtney Love, reminds me of a... what do you call it? Oh yeah Crackwhore slut, who is only where she is right now because of Kurt Cobain. Shes needs a few more plastic surgery procedures before she says anything about anyone. I proposed we ban all "artists" who bash Liz, have shitlists on your websites, don't buy their albums even if you want to, just to get them back. I've done my part, anyone want some pirated Hole mp3s? Oh yeah, what's with Jewel? She's trying be rip Liz off or something. Anyone see her new video? She's playing an electric guitar... Liz is the only female folk singer who's allowed to play an electric. I think Jewel just ran out of cutesy musical ideas, so she's trying to steal some material. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 02:38:31 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "laura nappi" Subject: Re: support-system-digest V2 #118 i haven't written in a while. but i just wanted to say that the binghamton show rocked. how cute was the hat? she was so cold and i felt to bad for her..... i wanted to know if anyone had any pics from the college tour shows. and if so could they make me a copy?? i would like to get a hold of a photog. it would be awesome. also, i didn't see anyone selling shirts or anything around. does anyone know where i could get a shirt. one more thing......the new songs were great. does anyone know if there is a new album in the near future? i would love to know. thanks so much guys. love, laura pixiedust63@hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 03:33:00 -0500 From: "Jorge (George) Cooper" Subject: Liz does not wear a bra and that's okay United Liz Nation, 1) I have enjoyed reading all the SS reviews of the college shows. Thanks to Janet, Craig, KB, Dan, Katie L., Julia, TAD. Many of these reports note with undisguised glee that Liz is President of FAB (Females Against Bras). I think that is a beautiful thing. I experienced such a a front row "show" in Chicago. Anyway, your reports were so inspiring that I decided to conduct an experiment. I asked my date last Thursday to burn the bra for our dinner outing. She hesitated but did it. In short, there was a certain spark in our conversation. I dare say that rare poetry escaped my mouth that night. As fate would have it, the restaurant was appropriately named, the Cheesecake Factory. Ahhhhh, Liz and the digest continue to improve my life. 2) Jase, thanks for the tape! I'm listening to it now. It sounds great! You are a beautiful man with a beautiful plan. 3) Has anyone else thought that Hope Davis in "Next Stop Wonderland" looks like Liz? See this movie. It's quite tasty. 4) I'm taking a screenwriting class and we're writing a 5-page mini screenplay. My femme fatale is named Katie Brown. KB, what can I say? You've got a very cinematic name. Do I have to pay a fee? 5) Craig and Katie, great photos with Liz !!! The bear tradition lives !! 6) Julia, are you still going to London this summer? I'm going with my brother in late July-early August. Let's hook up. Who else is going?? 7) What's so great about a set list? List members seem to do back flips when they get one. I have the Lounge Ax set list but I don't consider it the Holy Grail. It's just a bunch of scibble. Am I missing something? 8) My friend gave me the W magazine with Liz in it. Sexy outfit. But you would think a high class fashion mag could avoid giving Liz the demon-red-eye treatment reserved for amateur photographers. Like me. I >think it's a sad fact that this seems to be true. But I don't think >rock will ever die. As long as there's people like Liz Phair, and Tom >Petty making great music, rock will never die. I have the feeling that >rock will be back on the charts before anyone knows it. It happens >every decade. I just hope I'm not wrong about it. I really don't think that rock is dead by any means; if anything, this is just a resting period. This does seem to happen about every ten years or so, where it falls out of favor commercially, but it always comes back after a couple of years. The way that hip hop and rap dominate the charts now seems a parallel to disco's popularity in the late-'70s. During a typical week during that time period, as many as eight of the Top 10 singles would be disco songs, and rock took a real backseat saleswise. Also, during the late-'80s, there was a flood of teen pop artists (Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, New Kids, etc.) that rose to prominence, only to find the charts dominated by alternative rock a few short years later. I think the music industry does work in cycles, and within a few years, we'll see things shift again. As has been mentioned on the list before, there are a lot of reasons for rock's (alternative rock, in particular) demise. Probably the greatest of these is the fact that so many key artists, critically or commercially, took several years to release follow-ups to their breakthrough albums. There hasn't been a full-length Nine Inch Nails release since 1994, both Liz and Hole took four years to release new albums, The Breeders and Elastica have both virtually disappeared, although both have been said to be working on new material for a while now. The list of examples of this are endless. I think that many fans got sick of waiting for their favorites to come out with something new, and they've turned their attentions elsewhere. Also, in the case of other artists, while they have released material in a more timely manner, the quality of their newer albums is nowhere near that of their past releases. I know a lot of people who were disappointed by the last releases from PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth, and Smashing Pumpkins, and each of these artists have seen a decline in sales for their newest records. Many still believe that Kurt killing himself was the beginning of the end of alternative rock. I'm not sure if I completely agree, but he was one of the genre's key figures. Drugs have certainly took their toll, not just with Kurt, but they've killed the creativity of other artists and have been responsible for some bands breaking up or calling it quits. This is just personal speculation on my part, but I think another factor might be that since grunge happened, people have come to closely associate rock music with angst, and after several years of it, maybe people want to hear something different now, something a little less cynical and down. Ultimately, though, there are still a lot of artists out there putting out rock albums, even if they're not receiving as much airplay or press exposure as before. It may take a bit more work now to find the music we love, and a lot of major label bands may revert to indie status again, but I wouldn't be too worried. While I will freely admit that there maybe isn't quite as much good music coming out right now as there was earlier in the decade, I don't think of this as entirely being a bad thing, as it has given me an opportunity to go back and discover a lot of older music I'd wanted to check out but never got around to, using the money I'd ordinarily be spending on new releases. My music collection has greatly benefitted from this. Really, though, rock music is like your average horror movie villian (nice comparison, eh?): It may be down for the count now, but you just know it'll be around for a sequel. Katie asked: >What does Liz's husband do? > > Of course, I had to tell him to not get any ideas that he's >the kind of guy who sits around all day drinking beer and watch >the baby. I did mention that they met on the set of Liz's video >of Supernova. Sooooo.. what is he doing now? Actually, Liz met her husband earlier, while working on her first video ("Never Said"). He's a film editor, although I'm not sure what kind of projects he is working on now. Liz wrote "Supernova" about him, according to the Rolling Stone cover story at the time of _Whip-Smart_'s release. Thanks to everyone who has posted reviews of the shows on the current tour; I've really enjoyed reading them all. As much as I'd like to see Liz again so soon after the Lounge Ax show, I have to sit the current round of dates out, as I really can't afford to do much travelling right now. Reading everyone's reviews is the next best thing to attending the shows myself, though -- it makes me feel like I was there. Also, a big thank you to KB for posting the lyrics to "Firewalker". I really can't wait to hear this song sometime. Also, if anyone has taped or will be taping any of the shows, I'd love to work out a trade. I taped the Lounge Ax show last month and it turned out really well, and I have a lot of other shows to trade as well. Another thing, I haven't forgotten about the tape tree and hope to go ahead with it right away, now that I'm a lot less busy than I have been the past month. I would still like to do a CD-R tree, but many of the people who had offered to help out have since contacted me saying that they are too busy to right now or have since unsubbed from the list. If there's anyone else who would like to help out by burning CD-Rs for their fellow list members, please let me know; if not, we'll just go ahead with tapes for the leaves and CD-R copies for the branches. Regardless, I should have the tree structure worked out and posted sometime this coming weekend. Sorry for taking so long with this. Actually its the "imperfect" quality of Liz's voice, the lower register she sings in, the tone of it that is mesmerizing if you will, that makes it so absolutely charming and real. But the real fascination for me is her guitar playing. I have played for many years and I have never come across a guitarist who can do so much by doing so little. Her chord structuring and melody is truly a god-given talent. >You must listen to this song stoned. You must. Been there...yes it gives a greater appreciation. Well, I had a tape on and suddenly, I thought to myself, "If you turn it off right now, you'll hear Liz on the radio." I argued w/the voices in my head for a few seconds before I turned the tape off. When I did, I heard that I had missed the first few strains of "Explain it to me" (one of my very favorites), well, all of a sudden, the music stopped. The radio chick (who I adore and who I think is on this list) says that there's been a power failure. W/in 30 seconds, everything's back up and I get to hear the song in it's entirety. Someone mentioned something about this a while ago. My thoughts: Nirvana changed the way people looked at music and Liz changed the way people looked at women musicians. First there was Nirvana, then came Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and who else? First there was Liz, then came Alan-ass, Hole and others. My own opinion of course, I could be wrong with a few info. Divorce Song no encore Before going to the show I chatted someone who works for the student union and I found out a couple interesting things. First off, ticket sales were awful. Only sold 250 tickets up to the day before the show. They gave another hundred away the day of the event. My source also told me that they were gonna lose their shirt because Liz has a guarantee of $15,000 for the show. Liz’s price has really risen. I remember in an interview circa whipsmart or so she was only getting around $2000 David Mead was okay. Not as bad as everyone has said. He sorta looks like Billy Corgan except he has hair like kramer from seinfeld. He also looks like one of the actors from that move, That Thing You Do, but I’m not sure which one. Musically he sounds like the illegitimate child of a union of Jeff Buckley and third eye blind (if you can imagine that.) Liz and the band come on. Liz looked totally unbelievable. She wore a white halter-top that wrapped around her neck and and showed off her shoulders and back. The thing fit her like a second skin. She also wore a read miniskirt and her platform heels. All in all, she was literally breathtaking (at least she took mine away.) I had great seats. Reserved seating front row center. Right in front of Liz’s mike stand. I was probably twelve feet from her. After the very first song buddy the guitar player sarcastically told every body to move back because they were crushing all the people in the front row. A couple of people came to the foot of the stage and then a few more so I just jumped up out of my seat and went up there too. Reserved seating quickly became general admission. This way made for a much livelier crowd. For the rest of the show I was right next to the stage probably five feet from her at the most. After about the third song she told the crowd she was playing the setlist backwards tonight. Right after johnny feelgood liz said “the thing about the south is” and some one in the crowd yelled IT SUCKS! Liz said when she played in Richmond VA she was mindful of her songs because all the crowd seemed aghast by her lyrics. She then launched into fuck and run Liz seemed to like interacting with the crowd. Several times she tossed guitar picks to fans down in the front. She also knelt down and hugged one person and shook hands with others. After playing chopsticks she told buddy let’s just keep going and they did, never leaving the stage before launching into what is usually their encore material. The next to last song buddy jumped right into a rift and liz gave him a whimsical what the hell ya doing look. After a second it became apparent it was Rock n Me Baby by the steve miller band. She was sorta mumbling the lyrics but kicked it up a notch when it came to the chorus with the crowd singing along. Buddy then riffed into all right now (by free?) liz sang the chorus and they switched back to rock n me baby. Liz said somebody help me with these lyrics and seconds later a female hopped on stage and started singing along with her. She closed out with a rendition of divorce song that brought down the house. All in all a totally awesome show. Of the two new songs I think I like firewalker better. Don’t Apologize rocks too, but firewalker seemed to have more of a personality to it, kinda like uncle alvarez. Didn’t get a chance to meet Liz after the show but still this is without a doubt the best concert I have ever been to. Hard to believe she ever had stage fright from seeing this show. If anyone booted this show please contact me. I would give like my first born for boot of this show.
