There is a Liz Dress in the fancy dresses section and it's a pale blue strappy number. The band was as tight as they could be.The setlist was the same as it has been for the prior shows. The new songs: "Firewalker" and "Don't Argue" were fabulous. Liz announced to the crowd of maybe 500 that it had taken her 12 hours to get to this show as she was stuck in the airport in Grand Rapids for eight hours. She seemed healthy and happy though. She wore black cargo pants,a pink see through tank top with white straps and no bra. Her shoes were Nike's(no sox). The back of her sneaks were pushed down by the heels of her feet for the entire show. She looked really good! We were the second set of people in line since six PM to get into the general adm show. We were leaning on the baricade directly in front of Liz. Life doesn't get much better than this!! After the show I was tlaking to her new bass player and he told me that he was pretty sure that Liz was flying home after each show while the others were taking the bus. I asked him how she felt about seeing people after the show and he said she wasn't crazy about it. She did come out after about half an hour and signed autographs and posed for some pics. There were maybe 25 people waiting. I was able to get a signed setlist, a backstage pass and a few pics. She played seventeen songs and lasted for about an hour and fifteen minutes. The new drummer kicks. I really liked the previous one but the new guy is definitely superior. The new bass player is the nicest guy. For me, the lyrics can > make or break a song so in other words, her brash, in-your-face lyrics > were not as cool and didn't flow the same way as Liz songs. Okay, I hate to be the one who constantly jumps on the bandwagon of small indie bands, but here goes: If the song in question is "Torn", then it's not a song that Natalie wrote herself. And while I agree with the "lyrics can make or break a song", that's true only to a certain extent -- lyrics are very important, but then again so is the _presentation_. Those of you who are interested should check out the Ednaswap album _Wacko Magneto_, which has a version of "Torn" on it (they're the ones who wrote the song; the 'original' version is on their debut, self-titled album, which is now out of print). And when Anne Preven sings "torn", she sings it with such angst, such feeling, that the song actually _means_ something to me. (As opposed to Natalie Imbruglia, who just sounds *happy* when she sings it). If people really want to hear it, let me know and I'll toss an MP3 up on my website. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that yes, lyrics do contribute to the enjoyment of (or understanding of) a song. But more than that, the _presentation_ is also important. How often have we heard a cover song that just didn't do it right (like Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn"), or heard a song and said, "wow, those are neat lyrics, too bad she doesn't sound as though she means them". Someone else (and I'm sorry that I've deleted your post) wrote about Jewel that he/she was reading Jewel's lyrics and noted similarities between Jewel's lyrics and Liz's, but that Liz's just meant more than Jewel's did. Same sort of deal. Okay, sorry to ramble. And sorry to those people (Chris DeLisle) to whom I owe massive amounts of email.... the past few months have been hell in the literal sense of the word.... Thanks. -JL] From: Katie S Seippel Subject: mpls show I know I am a little late, but I just wanted to give my input about the Show in Mpls (tuesday the 13th). Liz was great as she always is and I am really begining to like her new stage presence, it's so cute when she tells stories and dances and laughs on stage. I got to the show a little late so I had to push my way up to the front and ended up standing behind a very tall and very wide person, who didn't appear to know Liz at all and wasn't too excited about seeing her live.....I think maybe all concert venues should implement a rule about who gets to be in front, there should be a quiz or something so that only the most loyal fans can be right up front. That way you don't have to get to the show super early, you can just show up whenever you want and then take the quiz and be escorted right to the front. I guess this may sound kind of eliteist, but I think we should have more rights at a Liz Phair concert since we are much more devoted fans. That way people like me (who are rather small and noncofrontational) won't have to try and push through a bunch of assholes just so I can see the top of Liz's head. Well that was somewhat of a stupid tangent..the whole point of this banter is that the show was great (because it was Liz) but it would have been much better if I would have gotten a better view. have a nice day Katie PS: the two new songs that Liz played at her show rocked!! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 19:31:28 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "bjrothe" Subject: interview.. I often try to figure out what is it that draws me too her. She isn't the outrageously gorgeous type... more girl-next-door... She isn't ridiculously popular... like Courtney, or Sheryl crow... She isn't the scandal-prone type... Madonna... She is what she is: just pure Liz. She doesnt live on a tour bus. She isn't super-fancy, just brushes her hair and walks out on stage. I bet she barely wears makeup. Why do I like her? Her voice is so strong and true. Warm and soothing. Her words are straight out of my mind. Everything has a deeper meaning for her. Even the set up of Whip Smart. She makes me feel safe. (I am quite high, this makes a safe feeling very necessary) I dont feel paranoid-- I feel like she is saying "I've been there, dont worry"... I love "white chocolate space egg" its so dreamy. Its on the same level as Shatter-- both hypnotizing... You must listen to this song stoned. You must.
