Vasant ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 02:20:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Charles Lewis Subject: Millersville show I just got back from the Millersville show and, as a previous poster had mentioned, the opening band *was* pretty bad. Then again, I wouldn't want to be opening for Liz. You're just *guaranteed* to look bad in comparison. I'm still not at all sure how Liz ended up playing Millersville, of all places, but I feel *deeply* thankful that I was able to attend!! There were fewer than 400 people in the gym, and the sound was really phenomenal. Most people were literally standing within fifteen or twenty feet of Liz - being fairly tall, I got a *great* view. The feeling was really intimate. I have a hard time believing the show was as good as it was!! It probably sounds sort of corny, but I have to say that Liz seems to grow more beautiful every time I see her - and I have to say that her see-through top was more than a little bit distracting (not that I'm complaining, of course). I'd like to believe that we made eye contact, but that seems a bit much to ask! I can't get over how tiny Liz is when you see her up close. I can't imagine how she managed to give birth to an 8+ pound baby, much less how she can look so damned amazing now... Incidentally, Janet was looking pretty exceptional, as well. The band was *really* tight, and Liz appeared to be extremely comfortable and happy. I can't remember the exact set list off the top of my head, but it *very* closely resembled the set lists posted within the past few days - with the notable substitution of Dance of the Seven Veils. The remainder of the songs favored EIG, then WCSE and then only a few off of Whipsmart (Cinco de Mayo and Supernova). There was a brief period where folks were shouting out songs (including Blood Keeper, natch! ). Someone called for Dead Shark, as well as Batmobile. Liz laughed and pointed out that the band didn't know how to play a lot of the more obscure stuff, but launched into a miniature rendition of South Dakota just for kicks. She played two new songs - Firewalker and Don't Apologize. I personally liked 'em both (shocker), but Don't Apologize seems like it might be a likely candidate for a single once the new record comes out - it had the right kind of structure and beat to possibly get some airplay. I'm going to be seeing Liz again both at the 930 club this coming Tuesday in DC, and at Bohager's in Baltimore the Tuesday after that. I'd be ecstatic if these two dates were even *half* as wonderful. I suspect the 930 club will be packed (I *may* have a couple of extra tickets, if anyone is really hard up), but Bohager's tends not to get that busy - so I'm definitely looking forward to it. Take care, Liz-lovers! CHL ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 07:15:45 -0400 From: Melissa Leigh Subject: Binghamton yes! Just wanted to send umm a shout out or something of that nature to everyone going to the SUNY Binghamton show tomorrow (sat). I'll be the short chick with the fake tattoo. Hope to see you all there. Liz vs Ani? What the hell do they have to do with each other? Some intern over at rollingstone should get smacked for that. WCSE on Vinyl: it's black. No pretty colors. - ---melissa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 11:52:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig King Subject: Re: support-system-digest V2 #116 Katie asked me which of the 3 new songs I liked the best? Firewalker or Conversation Overheard Between Two Bouncers or Don't Apologize? That's a tough choice, but I'd have to go with Don't Apologize. It totally rocks! But lyrically I'd have to go with Conversation..... cuz it totally sounds like something off of Girlysounds. The USA today paper just had an artice about entitled "Is Rock Dead?" talking about how rap, pop, and electronica dominates the charts. I think it's a sad fact that this seems to be true. But I don't think rock will ever die. As long as there's people like Liz Phair, and Tom Petty making great music, rock will never die. I have the feeling that rock will be back on the charts before anyone knows it. It happens every decade. I just hope I'm not wrong about it. Al ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 99 12:06:06 -0700 From: "Al" Subject: Why I Like Liz Phair I finally figured it out! Why I like Liz Phair more than any other female rocker out there today and why they do not compare. All of these other female musicians who are now riding on the wave of brash, in-your-face music that Liz paved the way for in the 90s, i.e. Alanis, Jewel, etc. do not compare and I've always thought in this regard, what sets Liz apart from them? I read someone's posting of some lyrics by Jewel on one of the recent digests, whose content of sex, boyfriends, etc. was similar to things Liz writes about (in a few lines, a little too similar), but in reading over them, it doesn't make me feel the same way I do when I read Liz's lyrics. My eyes opened up to this last night when I happened upon that Natalie Imbruglia chick performing live on VH-1 last night. I, personally, do not find her music at all to my liking, but I was watching her to see what she was all about. She was singing one of those songs that was played on the radio all the time (can't remember the name, as if I ever knew it) and in listening to her lyrics, I noticed she had all the ingredients of a Liz song, but it did nothing for me. The music was OK but it just did nothing for me. For me, the lyrics can make or break a song so in other words, her brash, in-your-face lyrics were not as cool and didn't flow the same way as Liz songs. Liz seems to have a way of using simple words and descriptions to get her point across but at the same time those simple words and descriptions are so profound and the way she puts those lyrics to the music is just perfect. Does anyone else feel this way? Anyway, to finish my point, here is the conclusion I have come to that sets Liz apart from all the other female rockers. Liz's music is all about kicking back & no matter how in-your-face her lyrics are, no matter how brash or shocking they can be, it still just makes me want to kick my legs up and say, "I want to listen a Liz Phair song right now!" On the other hand, the Jewel's, Alanis's, Natalie Imb., of this world, when I hear one of their songs, yeah they may say all of these shocking things like Liz does, but the way they sing these things and the way they put them to song, well, when I kick up my legs to their music, it makes me just just fall over my chair instead. Thus, Liz is just one cool, rad-ass chick, and being the kick-back kinda guy that I am, her music allows me to just kick-back and relax and have a friggin good time! Just thought I'd CHAIR, Al A little intoxicated last night when I came to this conclusion! ;) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 15:12:20 -0400 From: "Brian P. Falk" Subject: m.u. show i was there too. man, she is dreamy. didn't hear everything i wanted but the other posters were right, she was great as usual. it's hard to believe this person ever had a problem w/ stage fright- she comes across as so warm and confident and since the crowd was small (maybe 300?) there was plenty of interaction b/t her and us. at one point she came down to shake hands and i fought my way to the stage, but sadly i was about 1 sec too late. there were several of us who were singing all the songs out loud and she would notice and make eye contact and smile and a little narcotic glow would wash over my whole body. nonetheless, i tried not too swoon too much since i am a h.s. teacher and two of my students(!) were in attendance. can't wait for d.c. (got my tickets), and heard news of a baltimore show on 5/4 and i'm BEGGING someone from the list to post some details on where it is and maybe a # to order tickets before it's too late- maybe it already is. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 15:40:52 EDT From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: From an idiot who doesn't know how to count Send me back to kindergarten! Really interesting on how we talked about a few songs. She couldn't get the whole thing about Flower for some reason after I told her about Liz singing this as a duet with a few fans. I dunno, anyone find it interesting how Liz giggles her way through singing this song? Oh yeah.....ages ago, forgot who mentioned this, someone said that Liz sings "I can't believe it" during Johnny Feelgood. I never got this until I saw her singing this at the show. Oh well.....
