OK. For anyone in CA, have you heard of Waterstock? It is supposedly sponsered by Microsoft and is completely free. It lasts from Wed-Sun next week and has all huge names. Well it has rarely been publicized and had a 3 pg. article in the Metro. Well Liz is supposed to play on Wed. All the food is free and stuff. She's playing with more than 30 other people inc. Tori Amos, Bonnie Raitt, Alanis, Hole, Paula Cole. Well I looked on Matador and she pretty much has solid tour dates in PA. next week except for Wed. HHHHMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I just wanna know if it is a hoax or not because Ani is supposed to play on SAT. but I looked on www.anidifranco.org and she was doing a Show somewhere far away that day. I've been trying to check up on other headliners to see if it is a hoax. Well, would't Matador put something like that. Maybe Bill Gates wants it kept quiet. If so 700+ people just found out. I really wanna see Liz, so if anyone has heard about this PLEASE e-mail me b4 SUN or I will have to go on a holocaust field trip on TUE/WED!!!!!!!!!!!! please, love, Nathan xoxo _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Was anyone else at the show at Loyola tonight? It was so awesome. I'm not completely sure of the exact setlist, but I know she played(approximately in order) Chopsticks, Fuck and Run, Johnny Feelgood, Mesmerizing, Cinco de Mayo, Flower, Dance of the Seven Vails, Never Said, Uncle Alverez, Supernova, 6'1, Whitechocolatespaceegg, Stratford-on-Guy, Perfect World, and Divorce Song. I had front row center and I had a great view of Liz. If anyone is interested, she was wearing green pants and a lavender tank top. But I saved the best part for last. I GOT TO SING FLOWER WITH LIZ! She asked if any girls in the crowd new Flower and my friend practically threw me on the stage. Liz looked kind of surprised that I was on the stage so fast, but she helped me to my feet and then let two or three other girls on the stage too. I wish that it could have been just me and Liz, but I'm not going to complain:) My friend said that she got about ten pictures of me singing with Liz! I also got to meet her out by the bus after the show and she was so nice. Anyway, if anyone bootlegged this concert or finds someone who did, please tell me. I really want a copy of this show! I am so wired right now, I really hope this makes sense. Well, I can't sit still any longer so I guess I'll stop my rambling now. Hello all - I certainly have been posting a lot lately, maybe I'll become a regular or something...anyway - from reading the reviews/stories of my fellow support system digesters, I realize just how lucky I have been in my picture taking abilities! I mean, in Minneapolis they had metal detectors but I just had a dinky disposable camera so it didn't go off. And then when I was taking the pictures, nobody even noticed. Then in Iowa - that was actually cutting it pretty close. As Keely already said - the security guy was totally looking at me the whole time so I only took about 6 pics at that show, but hey at least I got that many...and then Keely got to record the show and that's just mad cool, so whatever. Anyway, I don't know if anyone cares about all this, but the pics will soon be available at my website, so it's not just stories about these pics, people will soon be able to see them. Plus - I'm finally a part of the Liz Phair group that has seen her and is in the current tour so it's really cool to be able to talk about it. Sorry if I'm rubbing it in for anyone, but trust me, I feel your pain if you haven't seen her yet. I also plan on writing a review for my site - mainly a story about a life-changing experience that probably only s-s-digesters will understand. Sooo...I guess that's all for now - sorry for the post that's kinda long and yet about not much at all... === The one and only, Suzanne Explain It To Me http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Hall/9429 _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Jewel opened for Liz back in the day and i think they played together at Lillith, so it's not too big a jump to say this song was directly influenced by Flower. hmm..interesting.. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 12:46:42 -0500 From: palik@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: Girlysounds >Also - I am also looking for a copy of Clean as a Whistle and Bliss and >Fetish. If you can help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you. Bliss and Fetish in't the name of a CD, it is the name of the "record label" that Patrick Oltraver used when he made his CDs of Girlysounds a couple of years back. The digital noise reduction he used made the sound quality significantly WORSE than the analog tapes circulating. Don ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 16:00:42 -0400 (EDT) From: Dennis Junkoo Kim Subject: Copyrights and infringement To add to April's well put posting: it is against the law to make bootlegs and copies of stuff like "Girlysounds" and "WCSE demos." Now, whether it's *wrong* or *prosecutable* is debateable... In the case of Girlysounds, I think that anyone would have a difficult time making a case against someone trading them. If i have my Liz history right, Liz distributed them from her parent's house and the only reason she was discovered was because a copy (hers or someone elses) made it into the hands of a record label. The WCSE demos on the other hand might be trouble. Ken Lee is only doing what he thinks is right, at cost to himself. The guy who sold him the tapes, probably not. There are quite a few popular misconceptions about copyright law circulating among the public; most probably originate from someone bullshitting an excuse for taping shows or making a copy for a friend or having mp3s on his web site or whatever. For example, my roommates had the bright idea of burning a CDR that has the full songs of all the songs that are in VW commercials. Good idea, they're good songs. Some of those songs, they already had, some i had on various albums, and the rest they went out and bought or downloaded from the VW website. Cnet did a story on what web designers listen to-one of them was my roommate who mentioned the CD. This story attracted lots of email from people who wanted a copy of the CDR...Then they had the bright idea of charging $10 for each CDR...The other roommate justified it as "oh, copyright doesn't apply to us because it's a compilation." Remember, if your use for the material doesn't pass the fair use test, it's probably going to be in violation of the fair use clause in US copyright law. Fair Use Factors: Use these factors to judge your use of copyrighted material without permission. The US courts will apply the same test to you should you be prosecuted, so answer reasonably. 1. What is the character of the use? 2. What is the nature of the work to be used? 3. How much of the work will you use? 4. What effect would this use have on the market for the original or for permissions if the use were widespread? (from the fair use test of the US copyright legislation) If your answers to the questions tip the balance toward commercial or personal gain with little benefit to the people, you should reconsider your use of that material. What affects bootlegs the most is factor 4. The key thing to realize is, the record label, the giant corporate avarice monster we all know and love isn't going to take the loss of one of it's billions of regrowing tentacles wholly onto itself...it's gonna cut off the arm of the artist. Record companies like Capitol hate music and the artists that create it even more. - --- "Your manuscript is both good and original, but the part that is good is not original and the part that is original is not good." -Samuel Johnson "A'nta baka?" -Asuka d. www4.ncsu.edu/~djkim2 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 15:20:47 -0700 (PDT) From: rlew Subject: liz screen saver/copyright? I thought it was good overall, Liz seemed really happy and the band was even tighter than the last time I saw her (at the Vic in Chicago last fall). She said it was "such a pleasure" to be there, and that it was her birthday.... The opening band was just okay (David Mead). My friends and I thought he sounded alot like Squeeze. They played for too long though. The crowd was very U of C, that is sort of hippie/nerdy. Mandel Hall seats about 900, but we got there fairly early and we were able to sit about 5th row. There was a sizable pit in front of the stage, very crowded. Liz was wearing a tight white halter top and red pants or skirt (couldn't see her bottom half). Her hair was sort of wild looking. She smiled all through the show and seemed to be enjoying the crowds reaction to her. She played for 1 1/2 hours, with one 3 song encore. Partial set list from memory (not in order): Flower She began Flower by saying: this song got me in alot of trouble. She played the slower version, with her backup singer beginning alone, and Liz coming in with the contrasting vocals. Cinco de Mayo Divorce Song Go On Ahead She introduced Go on Ahead by saying it was one on the more personal songs to her from WCSE. Uncle Alvarez Vocals on Uncle Alvarez were a little shaky on the high parts. Perfect World Slightly different version of Perfect World, it seemed more passionate to me than it does on the album. I always thought of the song as rather floaty and detached, but she sang it very emotionally. 6'1" Chopsticks (she opened with this) Mesmerizing Supernova Stratford New Song (Firewalker?) New Song: Don't Apologize This song seems to me to be directly influenced by the old song by The Knack called Frustrated. Does anyone remember that song? White Chocolate Space Egg At one point ( I think it was during the encore) someone yelled out for Bloodkeeper. She said: Blood what? Hey, this is really weird, some people have access to songs that never even left the studio. Someone must be in there with a microphone. But, that's a good thing, because I can't remember anything, so as long as someone has a record of it.... Then she gave a thumbs up. At the beginning of the encore, the crowd sang Happy Birthday to her and she motioned with her hands to increase participation. Her backup singer came out with a cake and Liz blew out all the candles. In all, very enjoyable show, mainly because Liz seemed so relaxed and happy to be there. I thought the best song technically was Supernova, which also got the biggest crowd reaction. Totally worth my 8 bucks! (I managed to scam student price tickets) Sorry if I left out any songs from the set list...
