IMHO, it wasn't long enough. she only played for an hour. i don't know. maybe i'm spoiled. who knows? i think the redeeming aspect of the show was the fact that i heard 2 more new songs. the first one was entitled "firewalker" and the second one went unnamed. but both were good, rocking tunes. can't wait for her to put those on her new cd (crossing my fingers). the room was about 1/2 full. i got there about 7:20 and started to feel really bad for liz, considering only about 200-300 people were there for a 7:30 start (capacity of the room had to be over 2000 - at the very least!) when everyone finally filed in, i'd say there were about 1000 people there......... a definite highlight of the night was liz's revealing outfit! :) she was wearing a pink spaghetti strapped top with white trim. let's just say that this top was "very revealing" and "thin" :) diskoboy23 and i were very happy! :) lol.......i think all of the 18-30 year old males in the crowd were pleased as well! :) then, on top of all that, during mesmerizing, liz pulled her hair back and did a little seductive dance that made me blush! all i'm trying to say is that she looked great! setlist included: (not all inclusive and definately not in order) chopsticks firewalker other new song dance of the seven veils flower (not the same magic w/o Katie Brown) :) Polyester Bride Uncle Alvarez WCSE johnny feelgood 6'1" (funny moment - liz fucked up the beginning of the song and realized it when she began to sing the same line twice. she said, "shit! i forgot the words to my own song! (or something to that extent) never said cinco de mayo fuck and run divorce song supernova perfect world sorry, that's all i could remember. in case everyone wanted to know, liz performed with a complete band. buddy the guitarist was there, along with janet and the keyboardist. i believe the drummer and bassist were not the same people who were with her earlier. does anyone know why? was there a falling out with those two? just wondering...... not meaning to sound like a total addict, but i think a main reason i didn't like the dekalb show as much as the other liz shows was because the hall had a "no smoking" law. normally, i see those signs and say, "screw it". c'mon, usually, nobody actually obeys those damn postings. for some odd reason, the students of northern illinois university DO! so, i decided to respect the people around me. well, sort of. i did light up a cigarette and took 2 drags off it. to me, it's not a concert unless i could smoke or drink (neither was permitted at the show). well, i guess i do sound a little like an addict! :) ATTENTION ALL LIZ FANS!!!!!!!!!!!: I'M GOING TO THROW THIS OFFER TO EVERONE ON THIS LIST. I HAVE, IN MY POSESSION, 10 COPIES OF LIZ PHAIR'S 7" OF POLYESTER BRIDE AND GREASED LIGHTNING. I WILL SEND A COPY TO THE FIRST 10 PEOPLE TO RESPOND WITH THEIR MAILING ADDRESS. NO $$$ IS NECESSARY. I'LL JUST PUT IT ON MY JOB'S MAILING BUDGET. SO, IF 20 PEOPLE RESPOND, I'LL JUST TAKE THE FIRST 10 LISTED IN MY INBOX. Fellow lister Ken enlisted the listers' help in purchasing secret tapes from the ex-roommate of some guy. I think the song Help Me Mary is about the guy-dominated music scene, because she says "I'll show them just how far I can *bend*", which is a guitar-playing technique. Or she was writing about the male- dominated yoga scene. COngrats Craig on the steal! Does anyone know how to play You Have No Idea? There's two chords that are weird. That's a question the folks at Matador Records will have to answer now that the label has returned to the indie ranks after last week's abrupt end to its three-year relationship with Capitol. Although naysayers have painted a bleak picture of Matador's prospects, label copresident Chris Lombardi says it's too early for obituaries. "People seem to have the impression that we were cut loose, but in reality, we had the opportunity to extricate ourselves from our contract comfortably and did," says Lombardi, who cofounded the label in 1989 with Gerard Cosloy (who recently moved to London). As a result of this split, Matador regains full autonomy— and loses its best-selling artist, Liz Phair. Marquee value notwithstanding, sources close to the label doubt that many tears will be shed over Phair's departure. "She's so high-maintenance that she'd have to go platinum, maybe even twice that, in order to be profitable," says one Matador intimate. "And that's never going to happen." I've been waiting well over 8 months for this and nothing will compare. OK - here's the basics: Liz came on at about 9:25-9:30. She was wearing a white tank top and a black leather mini skirt. Her hair was all poofed up and she looked incredibly good. I was so excited to see her I was jumping up and down and screaming and in shock. she played two new songs and a lot from exile, only a couple from wcse and whip-smart. HERE'S THE PART OF THE REVIEW WHERE I WARN PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE TO KNOW SETLISTS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. IF THAT'S YOU - STOP READING... OK, she opened with Chopsticks! Except she didn't play piano, she had the keyboard dude play it and she just sang. It was so amazing. She then went into "Fuck and Run". At this point I still couldn't believe I was watching Liz phair play fuck and run right in front of me! OK, after this my memory goes sketchy, so it'll all be out of order now. Before she played "flower" she explained it like this: "OK, you guys wanna hear a story? Well, I wrote this one back in college. I really liked this guy and him and his girlfriend were gonna break up at this party and so I crashed it to be there. Then I went home and got out my four-track and a couple of beers and wrote this song" So that's where she got the "..i'll fuck you and your girlfriend too" part maybe? Ok, the only other song she explained was "uncle alvarez" which she said was actually written about her uncle who was a litigator and it was kinda making fun of him being mad about everything or something like that. One of the new songs that she played was called I think "firewalker" and it seriously rules. The other one she didn't say the name of but it kicks ass too. OK, then the other songs that I remember were: Cinco de Mayo Polyester Bride Johnny Feelgood Mesmerizing uh....others I'm sure... Encore: Stratford-On-Guy Divorce Song Perfect World The only sad part of the night: she didn't play "Explain It To Me"...and I didn't get to meet her but I'm gonna try damn hard tomorrow in Iowa City!
