Subject: Bars of the Bed I think somebody somewhere once was wondering what the title of this song might mean. I just had a thought, and I thought I'd share it, as is custom for me on this mailing list (no matter what the content of the thought). I think "bars" is being used in two ways: bars as in like... metal things that keep you stuck in jail, and "bars" as in little snippets of a song. The second version of "Bars of the Bed" (second because it's on the second of the CDs ken made, plus chronologically isn't it second?) has spoken dialogue in which Liz is talking on the phone to her husband, and she's talking to other people saying "when I wanna go out, I tell my husband I'm working late". And then she is speaking to som eone, I imagine a man, saying "okay we've got two hours" or whatever, so she-- NO! The CHARACTER IN THE SONG is cheating on her husband. Hence she's kind of breaking past the bars of the bed, like the creed of marriage. Like when you're married, you're tied to thsi one person, like in jail you're in one cell, but she is getting past the bars of the bed. Then, "bars" meaning parts of a song, well she's obviously singing the national anthem, bars of that. I guess she didn't just choose any old song, she chose it because it represents freedom, and hence freedom to be married and cheat and get past the other kind of "bars," the bars of the bed. The only thing that throws me off is the line that we still can't quite decipher... "take my lover across the city to a bar that's _____..." So there's another bar, to which the title could be referring to, and then either the title has three meanings, or my two postulations are completely wrong. Okay... does anyone have any new info about Wellesley or Worcester? Okay... since I've been on the subject of Liz for so long, I have an unrelated statement to make: this Veryfine apple cranberry juice can that i have here (that i got for free for not donating blood cuz my veins suck... more on that later, possibly... i'm thinking of writing about it and sending it to eclectricity) has garfield sprawled out on his stomach (this story would be much worse if he was on his back) saying "JUICE ME!" I consider that very suggestive. I think it should be banned. I dare someone to call 1-800-VERYFINE and complain. Hey! I started a thread for once! (That survey thing people keep filling out). JW... yours was very funny! I mean... in a good way... REDNECK!! ;) Stormy Dawn... thanks for the Freudian/Jungian dream analysis. I forgot that spiders spin webs... your info makes much more sense than the lines i was thinking along. Go you and all your tattoos!!!! And Lucas too... good web thinking. Umm... shit i forgot. This is a long post, but this is what you get when i feel guilty about posting so often, so i just post one big one. Which I know is bad cuz i never read long posts. Oops. Oh yeah... Anyway, it does and doesn't have anything to do with our Liz. The premise is the main character is commissioned to write a "Where are they now?" book about Liz. He knows little about her and has to come up with something fast. As I said, not much of the book is really about her, mostly about the main character and his friends. When he is trying to remember who she is or find out any info on her, he rambles on "Liz Phair: cook at 350 degrees, basting all the while; serves eight. Liz Phair, consistently rich and delicious, cup after cup. Liz Phair- crush 3/4 tsp.. for use in eggplant, zucchini, and green beans." and so on. His analysis of EIG is pretty funny too. Anyway, I am sure everyone has read this, but I just thought I would share. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Apr 1999 00:45:17 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: siobha5@ibm.net Subject: millersville liz concert I'm new to the list and I was wondering if any one had info on the millersville university show. -Siobhan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Apr 1999 00:47:11 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: "Bramble, Ted J." The lyrics would indicate it is. "See how fast they run to the flame" The whole song seems to be about the kind of things one might think about on pot.
