So, i went to see Ben Lee in London last night. He used to be in the Noise Addicts and has had a couple of solo albums out, he's about 19 and an Aussie and my friend reckons he's a complete geek. Anyway, he's pretty bad. Musically OK, but there's these 2 girls on keyboards and one of 'em is going bonkers, like it's the greatest rock band in the world, totally inappropriate. Ben is acting like a buffoon too. Luckily the rest of the audience stood up (we were all sitting on the floor) so we couldn't see and that improved the experience. THEN........... The band walked off (they came back later, worse luck) and Ben starts singing "what a pretty life you have".... We look at each other.... Don't we know this song, no can't be....FUCK.. He did an a capella version of "perfect world". He put a few fucks in for good measure. My friend and i just laughed REALLY loud. It was so weird. When he finished i started shouting for "flower". Had he done it i would have walked on stage and floored him. So after that, we stood and laughed at him and his dumb stage antics. If you think Jonathan Richman looks geeky when he dances, check out Ben. Although i would asy, i wouldn't pay to see the guy. We left shortly afterwards as it was too much to bear. I guess we can blame the 80's revival for the girls. He should stick to being a solo artist. Off to see Mojave 3 tonight, not much chance of a Liz song there, which IS a shame. Later. Yeah, obviously it's a party day of enormous proportions, but there is a reason, and it has existed for thousands of years. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French. What's the day after Fat Tuesday? Ash Wednesday, of course. This marks the beginning of Lent, a time of fasting and piety-and Fat Tuesday is the proverbial last hurrah, when everyone gluts themselves full of debauchery in order to tide them over for the long weeks of fasting ahead. Of course, now this a Christian interpretation of the holiday, but it existed in pagan civilization, also...and it was a much bigger deal for them. So Mardi Gras is indeed a day for fun, but there is a method to the madness. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 08:56:34 PST From: "robert joyner" Subject: Greenville NC Show "An Evening With LIZ PHAIR" Mon., April 26th, 1999 @ Wright Auditorium East Carolina University Greenville, North Carolina Doors open @ 7PM; Show starts @ 8PM Ticket prices are as follows: Student Tickets/$18.00 Gen. Hey, I noticed that after someone in Chicago posted about spotting the Canivore 7" in a record store for $4, several people on the list have been going after it, so I thought it'd be best to let you know that it's no longer available. My friend Jason Burton lives in Chicago, and since he runs an internet music business selling the rare singles he finds in Chicago's used music stores, I have been bugging him for several months to keep his eye open for Carnivore. So I contacted him right away when I heard about the $4 Carnivore. He picked it up and is giving it to me at cost + shipping, which is *extremely* generous of him, considering that he's an established trader on e-bay and could easily auction it off for shitloads. I'm really excited to be getting Carnivore, but I know this comes as a big disappointment to the other Carnivore hunters on the list... There is a bright side to the story, though. Now Jason knows what the record looks like - before he was under the impression that it was a 10", so it's quite possible that he has often passed over it in his scrounges through the record stores. So he's *really* on the lookout now. Maybe if we beg him properly, he'll give this list the right of first refusal on any finds... who knows? His business is really new, so if you want to support him, please drop by at www.singlecollector.com. He has a bit of stuff by Belly, the Breeders, Veruca Salt, Sheryl Crow, NIN, REM, Hole, and many others, and he is definitely trustworthy - if anything goes wrong, I know his dad! (He was my interviewer for University of Chicago and gave me Jason's e-mail address so I could find out about the city. Oh, by the by, I got my acceptance from Chicago today - Yeah!)
