I am so mad! The only stop Liz is making (so far) to California is El Cajon! Why there? I am just ranting. I would have to drive about 9 hours to get to El Cajon from San Francisco, and there ain't much in El Cajon. At least it's near San Diego. Does she not like the west? Ok, enough ranting. As for Cinco de Mayo, I don't think it's Mexican Independence day, I think that's in September. Then again, I think it depends on what they are celebrating independence day from. Bye! And I have no idea why digest # whatever only had three posts from me. I did not do that on purpose! - -Stephanie ] np- Buck-o-nine: Tweny-Eight Teeth ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 13:51:42 -0500 (EST) From: kiskos@webtv.net (Edward Kisko) Subject: retro Liz palik@ix.netcom.com wrote: "Just got Ken's WCSE Sessions CD. Thanks Ken! I like the retro vocal harmonies on Greased Lightning. Too cool!" I'm so glad that someone finally pointed that out, because I've been waiting for an excuse to go on about Liz's "retro qualities" for years now. "Greased Lightning" is a favorite of mine, and I've always loved its retro sound, particularly the aforementioned backing vocals. But even more retro (and cooler) is "Freak of Nature," my current fixation. The older versions (from the '96 Shelved Demos/Studio Recordings tape) were really good, but I can't get over how fine the finished version is. Am I the only one who's reminded of "End of the World" when listening to "Freak of Nature"? For those who don't know, "End of the World" is a decades-old standard with lyrics like "Why do the birds go on singing? / Why does the sea rush to the shore? / Don't they know, it's the end of the world / 'cause you don't love me anymore." I think it was Liz's intention to make "Freak" sound as old -- and yet, as timeless -- as possible. It sounds like it came from 1966 or earlier, but then it's got that "phaser" effect on the one guitar (sorry if I don't really know my pedal names) that makes it sound sort of futuristic (or not). I think this happens with a lot of Liz's songs, and it's no surprise that she said she sees herself as a classic-rock songwriter. Anyway, "Freak of Nature" should've made the album. I could go on for several paragraphs about Liz's "retro qualities," but I won't. I will say, however, that Liz has always reminded me of Patty Duke (yes, really), especially in the videos for "Never Said" and "Supernova." Am I crazy? Has anyone else noticed these things? It is commonly misunderstood to be Mexico's independence day, but it isn't *exactly*. It was the day of some important battle or invasion or some other historic event. Just wanted to say that I'm acknowledging my unoriginality. But hey! it's very liz-like in a way because, you know, she borrows from songs all the time! More liz content... in a way... Today I really wanted to listen to Stratford-on-Guy. I was flying, but not into Chicago and not at night and I was at the front of the plane, not even in seat D (except at first I was supposed to be seated in 17 D which is only 10 from 27 D! But then a great mix up happened and I ended up in first class! Yeah!) However, my 7 year old portable CD player is now broken and will only play up through the fourth to last song on a CD or the 20th track, whichever comes first, and so I could only get up to like... what? I forget. So I was going to settle for listening to the first 15 tracks of exile but my batteries ran out and even though I had other batteries, I was in that dozing off sort of mindstate so I just took off the headphones and said FUCK IT! Yeah. Later, Nicole ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 19:29:25 EST From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: Responses DarkSide oftheMoon wrote: "Katie wrote:Come south Liz! South! South!
