When he first introduced Mesmerizing, I was excited because I always wished for more articles and photos of Liz. He started by putting up around 10 articles at a time, so it was light reading. I, too, have noticed the sameness of many articles, but there are some excellent ones (like the Rolling Stone cover story & the Second Skin article from '93) that offer obscure bits of info. about Liz (for those who dig that sort of thing). You're right, Ken does rock -- in more ways than one (in case we haven't noticed). I think he's got just over a hundred articles transcribed and over 400 photos to view. re: Meredith & 'whip-smart': When I was growing up, I always heard the phrase 'smart as a whip', but never 'whip-smart'. However, after Liz's record was released, I noticed the latter popping up in unrelated articles. Maybe it had something to do with Liz, maybe it didn't. It's certainly possible (actually, I always thought it had a lot to do w/ Liz's record). Some of you would be surprised by what a significant impact Liz has had on mainstream pop culture, despite her relatively (even today) "underground" status. (There are a few "hot words" in that last sentence -- I can see another rant already.) One of the articles on Ken's site points out that shortly after Exile in Guyville's release, there was more than one script floating around Hollywood with the term 'guyville' in the title. This was in this week's "The Met." Gerard Cosloy of Matador says he's planning a series of shows in New York and London to commemmorate the label's 10th anniversary. Since Liz is the biggest Matador player, I think you have a shot. I'm going to London with my brother during the last two weeks in July, but I think it would be earlier than that. Jase, don't you have an inside connection at Matador who can update us later? 2) I'm working on two different friends with my save-the-world-with-Liz campaign. As we speak, one's got Exile and the other EIG in their car CD player. In honor of Katie Brown, I showed Liz/Katie Flower pics and played the song for them at a party this weekend. One friend loved Flower and her boyfriend also approved for obvious reasons. The other friend, conservative but nice, was shocked. Her eyes popped out of her head. I had to pick them up and pop them back in. Not pretty. 3) I'm going to see Sheryl Crow for the first time, in Houston on Saturday. I've heard good things about the show. 4) All of you (Steve K., Jill, et al). going to college Liz shows, keep posting plans. I probably can't go back on the road yet, but it's fun to read just the same. I put on weight towards the end of college and lost it a couple years ago with a multi-fold approach (these are not necessarily healthy things but they worked for me): 1. start smoking 2. start jogging 3. become a vegetarian and eat lots of spicy Indian food 4. if you have a binge eating session, vomit 5. decrease intake of alcohol I didn't improve my health but I did lose weight (about 20 lbs). If someone's doing a Liz cover tape I'd be glad to contribute. Right now I can play Fuck and Run pretty well. I can play Glory (most of it). Never Said (same chord progression over and over). I can also play the chorus to shitloads of money (so if there are any of you little green elves, sitting out there today, step right up, wish me old Irish luck, cause I'm gonna need shitloads of money). All played on piano (I can't play geetar). One other question - does anyone have chord progressions for Liz material listed out on a website? Actually, this has been mentioned a few times in the past (I know the last time wasn't too long ago, as I remember responding to the thread). The song "Hot Child In The City" is actually by Nick Gilder, and a staple of many late-'70s K-Tel compilations, which is where I first heard it. It's no wonder I started buying albums as early as I did, given the state of my parent's record collection. To my fellow International Club members: I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to write to you guys yet, but keep checking your mailboxes about a week from now -- I hope to get to the post office within the next day or so to mail out your goodies. Jorge, if you could please send me your address, I would really appreciate it. I'm pretty sure I have everyone else's. :) Jase ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 23:42:37 -0500 (EST) From: "Nicole W." See now people are going to call it the "tampax commericial song". I only hope that Liz PHair is never heard over the eimage of tampons or any other feminine hygeine product. Now that i said that, the next commercial is going ot be like... fucking... "stayfree with wings... " with "johnny feelgood" in the background. Those wings protect your panties when you're being knocked down and dragged around, you know. Anyway... shit i had one more thing. GRRRRR! I need some serious... nah. i wn't put it in writing. The spoken word parts are so entertaining ("You better look, look to your left, passengers, You better look, look to your right. 'Cause I'm gonna take this plane out in less than five minutes. And this, this is your very last sight.") Black Market White Baby Dealer (White Babies): definitely catchy with hilarious lyrics. Can't Get Out of What I'm Into: "Cause it's a steady job, and it's the only thing that makes me money, and it gives me something to laugh about, cause my real life ain't fuckin' funny" - I can relate. Fuck and Run: a great song and even cooler in this version because of the extra lyrics at the end. I've been a big Liz Phair fan for years, ever since I got a free copy of Whip-Smart (i had a girlfriend in college who worked as marketing director at the college alternative radio station, I used to get free CDs all of the time, if it wasn't for her - she's now long gone - I never would have stumbled across Liz to begin with). Anyway, I never bought any additional Liz Phair stuff, not even Guyville, until the release of WCSE, which I bought right away. Somehow getting the new album re-triggered the passion that I had for Liz, and since then I have become admittedly a little obsessed. I had never scene Liz live before. I had tried to get tickets for one of her shows at the Vic in Chgo back in Oct 98, but failed. It sold out much quicker than I had suspected (duh!) and then I didn't realize that a third show was added until later. So then comes the news that Liz is going to play a show at Lounge Ax on March 14th. This is very exciting news. I'm originally from Chgo (but living in Cincinnati now) so I know that Lounge Ax is about the coolest venue I could think of for seeing her play. The only problem is that the tickets are only going to be sold at the bar, starting at 9 PM on a Thurs night. I decided it was important enough, so I took off early from work on Thurs and drove from Cincinnati to Chgo as fast as I could, getting to Lounge Ax about 2 hours before the tickets are supposed to go on sale. Already there is a huge line that has formed on the street. I get in line and they pass out numbered tickets you can use to redeem 2 tickets. It turns out I'm number 93. I have a beer at the bar, get my two tickets, and head to my parents, very happy, for the weekend (they still live in Chgo, we went to the auto show the next day so that was cool, too). The weekend of the show finally comes. I head up to Chgo and stay with one of my best friend's from college. Saturday night - big party, hollyfield fight, heavy drinking. Sunday - hurt, mexican for breakfast (huevos con chorizo, you just can't get good mexican food in Cincinnati), some shopping (I got some cool big shoes), do some song writing, eat some noodles, and then head to Lounge Ax. We didn't get there early at all, just before Sally Timms is going to start. Some guy is set up just in front of the sound board with a mic, a shitty little mixer, and a recorder. Apparently my friend recognizes this guy because he's at a lot of Chgo shows making bootleg recordings. My friend is still bitter because the dude wouldn't give him a copy of Yo La Tengo show he was at and he begins plotting on how to sabotage the dude's recording. We try to move up closer to the stage, but it's already packed and it's too hot, and I didn't leave my coat in the car like I planned and I'm too fucking short to see over all of teh tall people that decided to show. So, we migrate to the back of the club were I get a place on a ledge so I can actually see all the way up to the stage (thankfully I remebered my glasses otherwise I would have been screwed) and it's much cooler. There I stay and enjoy the show immensely. I don't get real excited about shows these days like I used to, but this was exciting and this was cool. Between seeing Kraftwerk in Chgo last Fall (first US tour since early 80s) and now seeing Liz at Lounge Ax, I don't think there's much left that could really get me excited. The heavy presence of Guyville material was great. I'm glad she's not distancing hersefl from that stuff. Her WCSE selections were exactly what I wanted to hear. And the inclusion of a girlysound selection (wild thing) was a great treat. My only disappoint was the almost total neglect of Whip-Smart material. Now I have tickets to see her in Columbus, so I will see her with a full band for the first time (I assume). Sorry my story was so long and touched on much material un-related to Liz. I really should be in bed by now. Later. - ----Original Message Follows---- From: AngelLieb@aol.com To: ericksonpaul@hotmail.com Subject: Lounge Ax Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 18:28:14 EST Paul, <> Just curious, you wouldn't mind adding your story to the photo album I have on my page?
