True, her second album sucks, but the first one is amazing. And she is a great live performer. I saw Sleater-Kinney for the first time on Saturday night and they just blew me away. How can three women emit such power and elicit such utter devotion from their following? Hey, they rocked, go see them! I love whitechocolatespaceegg. I like it even more than Exile In Guyville. And I really like EIG. So sue me. I never got into Pearl Jam. Not my type of music, I suppose. My favorite band of all time is The Go-Go's. Go figure that out. Yay, a friend of mine with a CD burner put Girlysounds and "Sessions"on CD for me. No, I don't have one of those things, so do't ask me for one. I didn't see Liz at the Lounge Axe on Saturday, but I get to go to South By Southwest in Austin this week, so all is good. ----Steven ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 23:11:29 -0800 From: "dana" Subject: you sexy thang... (i hope i copied this right...i'm not sure if i got those little arrow things...anyway) sex symbol vs motherhood...hmmmm. since when are these two states of being mutually exclusive? come ON. everyone knows women have uteruses and aren't afraid to use them. i have a major bone to pick with her management on that one...frankly, i can't believe they even said that, tho' it explains alot. dana ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 00:29:44 -0800 From: "dana" Subject: sonic egg regarding "wcse" again: i don't think anyone's bummed about her choosing to present more "mature" or "grown up" themes. ("go on ahead" is fantastic in it's honesty; it's so much better than hearing "oh, yeah, i'm married now and we had a baby and it's just so AMAZING..." i mean, we all know that's not the whole story...) her fans know that anything she talks about is done intelligently and addresses emotional truths, so her "growing up" is not a problem. anyway, the folks who are "disappointed" with the album are talking about the sound of it. i really think that she left herself plenty of ground to explore, sonically, with EIG and WS. (nobody's saying that all she's allowed are up to two guitar tracks and then maybe some drums once in awhile.) and she's always had a pop "understanding," which only *added* to her whole thing...she sort of played off of it and it made her songs smarter and funnier and just catchy as hell. but now it's not part of the joke, so to speak. i sort of feel that maybe (with WCSE) she's even addressing the "criticisms" of EIG and WS: that her song structures are "rudimentary" and that she "can't sing," both of which are such crap. when i'd read these things, i'd think to myself "liz, please don't listen to this, please don't listen to this...." she conquered the only real "problem" she ever had as an artist out there in the big, bad music world and that was her stage fright. these so-called criticisms were said in such a way as to imply that they were limitations, which, again, couldn't be more wrong. except, of course, if you're trying to "crack the market" and "reach people." do you think she failed to "reach" anyone? so, who knows, maybe next time she'll say "alright, i did it your way, now i'm gonna go back to sounding the way i want." because i'm still not convinced that WCSE was released 100% the way she wanted it, for whatever reasons. dana ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 04:04:50 EST From: Oh4sythia@aol.com Subject: flying into Chicago at night HEY - I FOUND OUT SOMETHING AWESOME LAST WEEK and then completely forgot about it... My dad bought the plane tickets for my trip to see colleges over spring break, and guess when I'll be flying into where? Chicago at 7 in the evening. I hope the sun is setting right then. So if the sun was setting to the left of the plane in the song, that means she was going north? Which way will I be facing if I'm landing at O'Hare coming from New York? Weber" Subject: Strange Brew Hey there all: Well, my first reply goes out to Bryan, and I laughed up- roarously (is that a word) at the mention of Old Milwaukee. I live in Milwaukee, (where it is produced), and even we natives call it Old Swill. I believe the reason that America manufactures many poor domestic brews is the fact that their cheap, and available to the vast majority. There are the exceptions however, and many an Oregon brew is acceptable to the palate. Unfortunately, they are usually not readily accessable. I must admit, that although Milwaukee is labeled as one of the major beer producers for the United States, we do produce massive amounts of domestic swill. If I'm looking not to spend that much dinero, I will drink swill. If I'm looking to enjoy a good brew, I usually drink an import. Hope this answers some of your questions. To Leslie: I used to have the Details article before mentioned with the Jealousy lyrics inside. Not sure, but I believe Sheryl Crow might have been on the cover. Anyway, the article broke down the lyrics of Jealousy line by line with comments on each line. I have to check my closet, but I think the magazine went in the garbage during one of my random purges of stuff I don't use. (I try not to be a pack rat). Hope this answers some of ye questions. I was actually trying to study (pf!) while I did this, so I may have becone delirious @ one pt, so please pardon any fucked-up timing issues. Anyway, I found some very cool little things. Enjoy! 6'1'': I forget who mentioned it (sorry!) but you can hear a "yeah" or something around :03, which I'd never noticed before, and someone said he heard a telephone ring @ around :17...I'd actually heard this for awhile b/c I set Guyville up as an alarm every morning, and my alarm clock does this terrible beeping right before ,y stereo turns on and the song comes on, so I always thought that when I'd heard it in the morning it was just my alarm clock resonating in my head. Whenever I listened to it at a time other then as I woke up, I thought that I somehow associated the song w/ my alarm clock, so I heard it in my head as a result, or something. (Observe the dumbass that is me.) Thank god someone else hears it too, so I don't think that I'm crazy or that I somehow marred the song by listening to it in the morning. I'd never noticed the "Yeah" before Never Said before now.......I bow my head in shame. Canary -- around :24 it gets kinda fuzzy and static-y and you can hear a man talking (perhaps it's a tv), which goes on for awhile until she starts singing, then around :43-50 you can hear it, and it's pretty clear around :47...does he say "not difficult"? Kinda hard to distinguish actual words. Gils! Girls! Girls! -- she does lotsa echo-ing phrases in the background, but w/ some attitude -- it's pretty cute. around :26 or :43 ( my notes say both...whatever) she says like, "Oh! I get away oh baby w/ what the girls call...", 1:12-18/19: "enough to see," 1:28 "check w/ me daddy!," 1:36 "advantage," 1:52 "what the girls call," 2:07 "girls call murder/don't stop[?]." I love the "you better check w/ me daddy!" Mesmerizing -- either it's a guitar blip or Liz says "what" around 2:05, then at 2:22 -- "you" kinda synthesized back-up or something. There's some laugh around 3:40/1, then garbled chains, growling, janging keys, or a fucked-up horse at the end around 3:45-55. Does anyone else hear sleigh-bells or something at around 1:50 of Fuck and Run? Fuck, I hope I haven't ruined it for you and turned it into a Christmas song. I also hear them a bit in Divorce Song, around 2:05-14 That's pretty much all I found....my ears feel kinda fuzzy and ache, but I feel really special. Or maybe I feel sick since I have a cold. I need to go back to bed...... Oh, I know I traded a Roseland boot w/ a few ppl (katie, Craig, maybe others) awhile back, and I got one that's much better quality, although there is this one girl who screams VERY frequently...but, whatever. The person who bootlegged it wasn't near where I was since all I could hear when I was there were ppl screaming "Fuck and Run!" at the end before she said "I know what I'm playing" and played it. In this bootleg, you can hear everyone yell "F and R!" and then one girl a second later screams, "X-Ray man!" For some reason that cracked me up. Also, for this one, the Flower "tutorial" isn't cut out b/c my friend who bootlegged the copy I've been trading switched the tape then and missed it. If anyone wants a copy, feel free to e-mail me and we can work out a trade, either for something else or a blanks and postage deal. I'm looking for Pottymouth Girl and the Fuck and Run boot, as well as any other bootlegs or rare stuff I can get my greedy hands on. Some you may have discussed, but when I did not have the cd's I didn't really read the posts that referred to them. I was too jealous (besides not knowing what you were talking about anyway). 1- Where do the shelved demos/studio recordings fit in (that tape we all have had for the last year or so) ? 2 - Who the hell did not like the 1997 WCSE cd? why on earth did she have to change it? I actually love it, I think I like Bars of the Bed (awesome and so catchy), waiting for the bird, freak of nature and russion girl as much, if not better than polyester bride, Johnny feelgood and shitloads of money. 3- Blood Keeper and greased lightening are awesome too, god she has soooo many amazing songs, I am so glad we were able to get to hear these. we are extremely lucky. think about how many others she has that we probably will never hear? 4- I absolutely love hearing the progression from the demos to the final versions of some of her songs. that to me is so interesting- the whole process of an artist- it fascinates me. Not that I like the over production of some of them better- just that seeing the process of something like hurricane cindy- for those of you who have phairities- that song has changed so many times- i love that! I have so many artists in my life, and have seen so many begin and finish work- the process is absolutely incredible- to see their vision and how it begins as an idea, a work in progress and become a finished product. I try to utilize this with my 1st graders in their artwork and writing. Too much emphasis is on the finished product in my school and not enough on the process. I love watching the whole process- its where all the learning takes place. Most people don't see that. especially administrators who like "beautiful bulletin boards." My best friend is an incredible artist - right now she is actually making chuppas (for all you non-jews, its the canopy that jewish people get married under) and she weaves beautiful ribbons, well anyway, in her past artwork, she goes through such a process to make them, that when the piece is finished, she feels like it has left her. thats how she is able to sell them and not look back. the process for her is her therapy. I am sure many of you who are artists/musicians/writers etc. understand this. I think about this when i listen to liz's music (these cd's) and hear how much each song has changed. well, i think i have shared enough of my thoughts for the day. If anyone wants a copy of these cd's (a must for everyone on this list) I will be happy to tape them for you.
