He said that WCSE was a far superior album. While this may true in his opinion, I somehow feel insulted. In any case I just wanted to know if anyone has heard anything of like. There are lots of bands that the same could be said about(ie..Nirvana, Hole, Van Morrison). I mean to each his own and opinion and all but I just wanted some feedback. Well, since a lot of the people on this list are getting excited for the Lounge Ax show, I though I'd post something about what has made me pretty excited (but not THAT way). My birthday was last Tuesday (Mar 9... same as Barbie I'm told) and one my gifts was a gift certificate to a local bookstore. So, I eventually made my way to this bookstore and bought a huge ass Bible-sized book called MusicHound's ROCK: An Essential Album Guide. Apparently this book is released annually with updates and such along with brief biographies and album reviews for almost every musician in rock. Well, other than being an interesting read, I noticed that in the bibliography section in 'recommended sources for further information' under "Liz Phair", my site is listed along with Ken's "Mesmerizing" site and Matador Records' site. I know it doesn't really hold any "WOW" value, but I must say I was pretty jazzed seeing a familiar URL in a book. Okay, I think that's all I wanted to say... Sometimes, ROBBIE THE SLICK DIVIDE http://valmccown.com/lizphair.html ps.) JASON, are you ever going to update your "Support System" website??? Inquiring minds want to know - like me. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 18:14:20 -0500 From: "Jill Sheehy" Subject: Re: support-system-digest tab? in some desperate attempt to mirror girlysounds (as if, i know better than that...) my roommate and i have an acoustic guitar and two voices, and we are primed to start our band(ette). in starting out, we look to liz's tutilige to guide us. so.... anyone know where you can get good liz tab, namely from wcse? i have found a few things for exile and whip-smart, but there is something in us dying to belt out "prefect world"... if anyone can help point us in the right direction for liz guitar tab, it would be much appreciated. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 23:08:56 -0600 From: "Joseph H. Oh, and no offense was taken; I feel the same way about country music, or rap for that matter. Swing not ye cup o tea eh? Try Earl Grey instead, hehe. Be careful, however I hear Liz's next album will be swing based, just kidding. Catch ya later, hipcat. Nicole posted: >The photo of Liz >isn't good because IT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE HER! The only thing I like >about >the cover is the lettering and the yellow circles. But the picture... Liz >takes pictures well and I'm SURE there were better pics to choose. I agree, Nicole! That has to be the worst picture ever! She looks like a demon... and her nose, it looks like one of those Grocho Marx noses that come with the glasses. I dont know what she was going for with the picture... but I hope she accomplished it , and will never try again. I picked it up in BullMoose Music and I had to look twice to make sure it was her... My first thought was drag queen... I feel a little guilty now for getting that off my chest, but ugh! And why so much air-brushing ? The one thing I always loved was her clean, no-makeup, finger-combed hair look was refreshing and wonderfully liberating. She should have used the picture on the inside, the one with the mexican blanket, and those gorgeous shoes. Another thing I wonder about WCSE... why did she choose to smush white chocolate space egg into one word ? Was it simply because the title is too damn long ? I think she should have named the CD either Polyester Bride or Love Is Nothing or even Baby Got Going... One more thing-- anyone else notice all the references to her mother on WCSE, I dont remember any other references in past songs... Perhaps the reason this CD is so "clean" could be because maybe its for her mother/parents in a way... hmmm--- things to ponder... Have fun at the show guys!!! - --- Jaime ***"I see my shadow... i think i'm losing my soul..."*** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 17:41:15 -0800 From: "Stephanie Morris" Subject: Middle of the Road This is in response to Dana's posting and the stupid Grammys "as for the grammys, they're a fuckin' joke and have been for way too long now. it's like "clash of the plastic titans." it's almost as if it's better to not get even nominated, 'cause it somehow *proves* that you're a vital, interesting, and unique artist. (or that you really really suck. opposite ends of the bell curve, i guess.) the grammy panel seems to have an instinctual knack for ignoring anyone who's got anything interesting to give. meanwhile, just like the blobby bell curve, all the awards to the big, gassy windbags. if only an iceberg would sink that damn song from "titanic." bring on the hydrochloric acid bath, man, we need it now!! liz's incredible graciousness concerning other artists is amazing...it kind of breaks my heart. dp" I agree. The bell in the curve represents mediocrity. The flat ends are no-talent morons, and then people like Liz and many other unrecognized bands who have lots of talent, and something to say. People in general are a bunch of sheep who follow what big record companies, big radio stations, and the Grammys say. They are too scared to branch out on their own and find an artist that is virtually unknown. I think that it's great that Liz is gracious instead of being bitter. It is a bit heartbreaking though, I agree. - -Stephanie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 21:36:35 -0600 From: "Joseph H. Weber" Subject: Not again! Hey there all: I'm starting to notice a current trend, or alliance as it were. Well, I'm making a stand, hehe. Many people on the list have commented on wcse because it is "too polished," or the lyrics are not as aggressive as EIG or whipsmart. Well, I think that wcse has a character and style all it's own. A damn good cd altogether. Maybe it's a credit to Liz's in- dependence to release a cd different in style to the earlier releases. If she decided to make this cd more mainstream, to appeal to a broader audience, why is it her own fans decide to label it inferior? And why does everyone have to give hell to Alanis? I like Moreupset and Liz just as much as I like old punk bands like Charged GBH and the Freeze. Sorry, I just think that too much criticism has been heaped on wcse lately. Oh my, I have just been serious for a whole paragraph! This must end! Back to sillyville, hehe. Hope that my crazed ranting hasn't upset anyone. Hey, was anyone on this list at the Shank Hall concert in Milwaukee on April 21st, 1995? Great show, and I still have the Liz Phair autograph on the inside of my leather jacket. With all the Liz talk lately, I've totally forgotten that I actually met her back in 95 after the show. If anyone was there please reply. And one final note, still waiting for your reply, Jase, on the Girlysound demos. I have a couple high quality metal tapes just waiting for Hello Sailor to be planted on them. Lemme know the cost buddy, and I'll send em racing your way:) If you're looking for anything obscure that I might have, let me know. I feel like a kid who just went to his first baseball game. I am enamored with that band. They kicked ass Weds. My favorite songs were Dig Me Out, Words and Guitar, Turn It On, Get Up and Little Babies. Lucas, sorry I missed you. I didn't get your physical description till the day after. Greg and Allison, I sent the articles today. Don't be alarmed by the huge envelopes. It's all I had. You are going to die happy at the NYC show. 2) On Chicago, I haven't been since I was a kid. I'm pumped. Can someone bring a copy of Blood Keeper. I haven't heard it and Steve Kisko swears by it, even in Florida (I can hear him now). 3) Several people have asked. We're meeting outside the Lounge Ax Sunday afternoon. 4 or 5 pm. Just meet us there. We're going to hang out there and get mentally prepared the thrill ride that is Liz. They get a lot of promo stuff that they don't put up, and lots of times have lying around somewhere in "back." After a couple of times through (just a couple, i'm not that dense) i figured out that it was in the recording around 17-18 seconds into the song. It may not be a telephone (maybe some weird feedback or something) but it fooled me. And that weird sound at the end of "Jealousy"? my friend swears the same thing is at the end of some led zeppelin song. anyone know what he's talking about? And speaking of "Jealousy", the Juvenilia EP cover seems to be an outtake from the video for "Jealousy" (which is probably my favorite Liz video, tho she's really sexy in the "Rocket Boy" video. Oh, there's this movie _October Sky_ whose working title was "Rocket Boys". anyway). "Hey, why don't we put some outta-focus, see-thru karate people on the cover?"
