I hope I don't screw it up. Anyway, just my phreaking luck, first I find out Liz's Denver show in November is canceled the day before the show, and now I have a soccer game at the same time as the webcast. If anybody is making copies of it I would really appreciate if you would let me know how to get a copy. It's great to know there are others out there who feel as I do. I'm not lucky enough to have picked up any of the bootlegged material, but I have listened to the commercial releases with a fervor - and I love 'em to death! That being said, I wanted to point something out about why I think WCSE seems to depart from a lot of the themes that Exile and Whipsmart seem to delve into so deeply. WCSE *is* a kinder, gentler album overall. There's a greater emphasis on production values and presentation, and the themes explored *are* different. In a lot of ways, it's a more grown-up album. Then again, it was written by a more grown-up Liz... Liz is a very different person now than she was back in '93. In the past four years she's gotten married and had a son. That kind of thing brings about profound changes in outlook and priorities. I think WCSE is a reflection of these changes. It's especially amazing in that it begins to deal with issues that generally aren't touched on in rock. Listen to the lyrics in "You go on ahead" - it's some scary stuff, if you think about it. I feel privileged to see Liz's perspective on some more subtle issues, personally, and I'm *really* looking forward to her next effort! I don't think we'll ever see another Exile. I do think that we'll see some other incredible .. but different .. things, though. Incidentally, please don't get me wrong! I think Exile may be one of the finest albums ever made, and I still can't go a day without listening to Whip Smart. I'm glad she's trying new directions, though. It just reinforces the fact that we already knew: Liz Phair isn't just a rock star, she's also an amazingly talented artist... Here goes nothing. Whoever said that "orange and blue, green and pink" were the national colors of Ireland...have you ever even seen an Irish flag?! It's orange, white and green. No blue, no pink. And have you ever seen a purple, yellow & reddish-brown flag? I didn't think so. I'm in conjunction with the easter egg idea, plus the obvious connection between the fertile egg growing into a fetus. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 22:50:17 -0800 From: "Stephanie Morris" Subject: Re: support-system-digest V2 #70 Hello! Does anyone have a copy of the shelved demos that they feel like trading? I have nothing thrilling to trade, but can send you a blank tape, and/or some stamps. I have to agree with a lot of the recent postings about WCSE not being as good as EIG and WS. It is actually a good album, but it is too produced, and just drastically different than the other two. But, it's growing on me. Anyway, if some kind soul wants to trade for the demos, let me know! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 00:36:17 -0800 From: "dana" Subject: acid rain HEY!! what's this about tour dates?? woo-hoo! amy: beautiful article! i think you should take it to congress....really, i think you utterly nailed it. as for the grammys, they're a fuckin' joke and have been for way too long now. it's like "clash of the plastic titans." it's almost as if it's better to not get even nominated, 'cause it somehow *proves* that you're a vital, interesting, and unique artist. (or that you really really suck. opposite ends of the bell curve, i guess.) the grammy panel seems to have an instinctual knack for ignoring anyone who's got anything interesting to give. meanwhile, just like the blobby bell curve, all the awards to the big, gassy windbags. if only an iceberg would sink that damn song from "titanic." bring on the hydrochloric acid bath, man, we need it now!! liz's incredible graciousness concerning other artists is amazing...it kind of breaks my heart. dp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 03:06:30 -0600 From: palik@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: Liz CD DarkSide oftheMoon wrote: > > here they are > saved in zip file in jpg format > if you have a color printer go for it > let me know what you think > > --------------------------------------------------------------- > > Name: lizcdcov.zip I do like the one with Liz lying on the ground with her red guitar and glasses on her forehead. This shot is obviously a close-up from the same photo shoot that gave us the cover to the Fuck and Run bootleg CD cover. The white one with the blue star with Liz liooking downward has already been used on another commercially (?) released Liz CD or album cover, so I don't like using it as I might mistake it for the previously-released record. I prefer the other one for the wcse sessions CD cover. I feel like that too. What I love in EIG is that it is less polished and more raw. And also the music is much more original and ambitious (many songs without a bass, unconventional songs like Flower or Shatter or Canari). WCSE looks more like a product made to please more listeners. I like WCSE (and I *love* some songs in it) but not as much as EIG or WS to talk about the "official" albums or the Girlysound tapes. >i think its because all of the songs seem very radio-formatted. Yes that's what I think too. I guess Matador probably wanted something more accessible in order to reach more people. :/ I'd really like to know how the songs were before they told Liz to redo them. >god, you must all hate me now Not me :) Moe ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 07:01:38 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Connolly Subject: video style Subject: sticks and stones Hi- "All-anus" - thats a three-pointer Imbrugli(o) means bundle (as in nerves?), but a better fit is the verb "imbrogliare" - to deceive, defraud, swindle. Why is it always that people who are nominated the ones who sell their albums? Sorta the backwards version of the Oscars. You know? Everytime Oscars are announced, it's always movies you've never heard of, while with Grammys, it's what everyone expected. Sad huh? Anyways, it's all a popularity contest in some ways right? I posted on SS a few days ago that I made a CD insert for the CD's that Ken is making. The good news is that I made another one that looks even better than the first. The bad news is that once again my hard drive crashed and I wasn't able to respond to all of you that E-mailed me and requested a copy. I tried to send one to Ken (whether he got it or not I don't know). It may be awhile before I can get my 'puter back on-line (damn Packard Bell). So for now I am using my work E-mail. Since all y'all on Support System are the greatest, I can really use help on the following: For all of you that E-mailed me for the CD covers please E-mail me again at this address - jeffrey.kern@telops.gte.com (so much for anonymity) It may be a few days until I can get them out but at least I can.... For Jase, SS list keeper extrordinaire, can you subscribe this E-mail address to the list so I can get it here at work? (Yes I am that hard-core a Liz fan....so sue me!) Sorry I don't have the auto/daemon/subscribe address thingy or else I would subscribe myself from here. If you can great, if you can't then someone send me the auto thingy address and I will sub myself from here....thanks jase..... For Ken, maker of the CD's and all around great guy, you were gonna E-mail me when you sent out my CD's. Can you send that E-mail that to this address instead of my hotmail account? Did you get the e-mail/attachment I sent you? I was hoping that I would be able to arrive in Chicago on Sunday to go to the Lounge Ax show, but the train schedule just isn't working out to my advantage, so I'll be down a day early. If anyone has any suggestions, please email them to me at . I'm going to be in Toronto tomorrow, so I probably won't be able to check this account, but I will be able to access the hotmail one. Also, I know a few people have asked about the tape tree -- I've been pretty busy, but I have been working at it and hopefully will be able to post the tree structure once I get back from Chicago. I'm trying to work it out so that everyone can get CD-R copies, but I keep running into snags -- we'll see what happens.... I'm looking forward to meeting everyone from the list who will be going to the show on Sunday night. I'm hoping to get to Lounge Ax before 5, which seems to be when everyone is meeting there. I should hopefully be pretty easy to recognize -- I'm about 5'8", and I'll be wearing a blue jacket, Airwalk shoes, jeans, and likely a baseball cap. Oh, and I'll look like I'm about ready to have a religious experience. :) Three more days... I only know because I was in the front row and there was a photographer in the stage area ahead of me who was annoyed with the slide show taking so long and the same ones being shown twice. Since it was the third time I'd seen it, I told him it was almost over, what song to listen for, and asked what publication he was from. He said Rolling Stone. I asked if they'd be doing another big story on Liz (like '94) and he replied. "No- this is for the webcast". (Like I was supposed to know all about it or something.) Hope that helps. - -Janet ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V2 #71 ***********************************
