So I'm gonna try to share... First thing - you must understand that the Hal Leonard sheet music book for Whip-smart has preserved forever one of our list's most infamous misheard Liz lyrics: "sherriff's bare red ass" in place of "cherub's bare wet ass" in Supernova. Now I just got a copy of World Cafe from Tad (thanks) and decided I *have* to share this segment with anyone who missed the show: - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------ "I put my lyrics on this time. Had a fight with my manager because he thinks that dispels the mystery, but I had a rude awakening when I saw a songbook for Whip-smart. And the lyrics were just *demolished*. You should've---I was so---well, I wanted to die" Interviewer asks, "How do they get them?" Liz: "Well it's like a piano book for kids, and y'know what they just made 'em up, they just listened to it. And it was SO BAD, I mean, I was laughing and crying in the same instant. I can't tell you how BAD it was. There's something I can't really quote over the radio but it was like the worst -- it was from Supernova--and it was like THE worst image I could ever---and there's like people in Idaho---poor little girls say [puts on little girly voice here:] 'I've heard of Liz Phair and I want to take this to my piano teacher.' I wanted to die..." - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ---------- I was laughing so hard from the minute she said "I saw a songbook for Whip- smart", you know - because I knew what she was getting at right away... Okay, a few last wcse comments, but I promise, they are not serious or boring, so hang in there: "steve from indy" said about wcse: <> You know, I always thought this song was kind of "sexually charged" as well (though that also had something to do with my mishearing the next few lines as "once I felt you I *COULD* lay you down [and fuck you like a dogt, etc.]") so reconstructing all my thoughts into the context of baby Nick is weird. If I don't proceed with caution, I'm going to be caught halfway between interpretations -- someone fucking a baby? ack. So Nicole's still wondering about Al Wrong... I mean, the disapperance of All Rights Reserved, All Wrongs Reversed from the official wcse. I'm wondering too, and it will help a bit to know whether any Matador releases AFTER wcse bear this logo. I know Ruthie's new CD on Matador Europe (what was it? s-k?) has Al Wrong on it, but what about others? Anyone have the new JSBE or something? Anyway, so what else did I laugh so hard over? The last post on the digest. You remember it, don't you? I'll give you the beginning: < Subject: A goose! A tiny little goose! Oh, my goodness. OOOOOOoooooh fun!! And today is the last day of class before spring break! OOk! Oh, and I'm afraid people are building up Blood Keeper too much. It's a great song and all, but the way it's being built up, I'm afraid the poor pholks who haven't got it yet will be just a teensy bit disappointed if the song doesn't have some religious, life-changing effect on them. That's what happend to me when the first Batman movie came out; I'd been rabidly anticipating it for like a YEAR, and then when it finally came out it couldn't possibly meet my lofty expectations. Time has healed that wound, but I would spare others that pain, if I could. Speaking of pain, every second that I spend *NOT* listening to Bars of the Bed is like lounging in a hydrochloric acid bath filled with mutated, acid-dwelling piranhas. I love this song for many reasons: 1) I learned the words in record time, so I can sing along with it loudly and at top volume w/o that usual uncomfortable waiting period of lyrical osmosis. 2) It fuckin' ROCKS!!!! as much as any of her songs EXCEPT I'm Like That, which I pray she will include on her next album. When i think of housewives vacuuming to these songs, I picture the ultra-tan, droopy-boobed lady on speed from There's Something About Mary. 3) The title is a wonderful puzzle that leaves me pondering how it relates to the rest of the song. I have some ideas. 4) It's really a hoot to sing. I've changed my will to indicate that Bars of the Bed should be played in a continuous loop through an in-casket sound system to accompany me into the underworld. I'm guessing it's Brad or Casey or whoever, but you can hear a voice for like 1/2 a second. Also -- and this is something we've discussed on #wcse -- if you listen *really* closely (if you're like me, you hear it upon first spin) to 6'1", at about the 0:03 mark, you'll hear a "yeah..." that's not as prominent as the "Yeah!" that opens "Never Said." I want to add one last thing to the whitechocolatedisappointment thread I started... In one recent interview (archived at Ken Lee's lovely Mesmerizing site, as always), Liz said it was "funny," but this last record was like taking one more step to saying the darker, disgruntled things. I'm sure you remember; it was the one where Liz said she's writing new stuff. Anyway, I'm willing to bet that LP #4 will indeed be darker, more disgruntled (closer to Exile, I suppose), less slick. Kudos to all of you who are heading to the Lounge Axe soon, hope you have a killer time watching Liz solo, which I think would just be so cool. I have attached an editorial I wrote that got published in my college's newspaper, I thought some of you might agree with it! Anyway, sorry it's so long--but isn't Liz worth every sentence! Adios compadres. Why Not Liz Phair? By Amy Sorlie As I sat through the 3 hour Grammy telecast and watched all the big stars in their happy shining moments, I couldn’t help but think that something was missing, or shall I say someone. Sure there were the usual superstar faces such as Celine Dion, Madonna, and Will Smith, but where was Liz Phair? You know, the big blue-eyed guitar playing poster girl who used the F word a few too many times on her debut album Exile In Guyville. Where was the woman whose 1998 third album release Whitechocolatespaceegg was on every top critic’s list from Rolling Stone to the Billboard Charts, as one of the best albums of the year? Phair, 31, was most likely at home tucking Nicholas, 2, into bed, or maybe she was busy, guitar in hand writing more of those notorious bad girl songs she’s known for. Liz Phair was probably on the couch with husband Jim Staskauskas sneering at the television set as she watched artists like Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette, and Celine Dion accept their awards. Artists who should probably be thanking her in their acceptance speeches, for not only paving the way, but for being one of the first in the ‘90s to say---Hey look at me, I’m a woman and I can rock! Her contempt would not be aimed at the artists themselves but rather at the Grammy’s for overlooking her incredibly honest songs, her talents, and above all her place in the music world….once again. Grammy was exceptionally generous to women this year, nominating more females than in any previous year. So why not Liz Phair? To win a Grammy award in this day and age, the key words seem to be “hit single.” Sheryl, Alanis, Madonna, and Lauryn all had multi-platinum albums because of hit singles. Liz Phair released one track entitled Polyester Bride, from Whitechocolatespaceegg that virtually got no airtime, unless you listen at 4 am. The song like so many on the album has all the qualities of a hit single; a nice musical flow, catchy lyrics, and perhaps the most important thing, sing-along-ability---isn’t that how we all remember songs anyway? Even with appearances Letterman, Leno, and Rosie O’Donnell, the song, the album, and the artist went unnoticed….again. Phair, a Chicago native fell into the music scene after graduating from Oberlin College in Ohio. She began writing songs quietly in her room about relationships, lost loves, and about the awkwardness of developing into a woman. A friend heard a few of her songs and begged her to make him a tape. She made him two tapes of all the material she had at that point and dubbed the tapes Girlysound. Through word of mouth and the underground music scene, the tapes traveled quickly and eventually made their way to the people at Matador Records, one of the most successful independent record labels in the U.S. They signed her immediately and soon after she released Exile In Guyville. Her debut album was instantly noticed not only for its profound lyrics about sex, but because Phair was a one-woman show who could really play the guitar. Her longtime bassist Leroy Bach remarked on her playing to Neva Chonin of Rolling Stone, “People never talk about her guitar playing, but she is brilliant on guitar. The work that she puts into this is not discussed like someone else’s work method might be discussed,” he said. Exile grabbed listener’s attention and went on to become quite successful. To date it is #9 on the Alternative Press top 90 CD’s of the decade list. It is also listed in Rolling Stone’s top 200 must-own albums, where Phair’s name accompanies the likes of Zeppelin, Hendrix, Nirvana, and Dylan. The Liz Phair sound quickly mainstreamed and less than a year later in early 1994 she released her sophomore album Whipsmart, which was criticized because it differed in sound from Exile. The lyrics contained some graphic descriptions as with the first album, and a few colored words, but Miss Phair had obviously toned it down. After a battle with stagefright Phair took a break from music, a 4-year break to be exact. In that time period she got married, had a baby, and wrote dozens of songs that would soon become her third album. When Phair released Egg, the 4-year growth made itself apparent. The songs are personal, intimate, honest, and while they still rock in Liz Phair fashion, they reach a much broader audience. The album immediately went gold and was a critic favorite. So how come no one knows Liz Phair? Phair is slowly but surely getting the chances to expose her music to huge audiences. Last summer she was a part of the star-studded Lilith Fair, and last month she opened 10 shows for Alanis Morrisette. A bit of irony that is considering Phair’s lyrics opened the door for songwriters like Morrisette to make millions off of being labeled an “angry woman.” It would probably surprise many to know that in their early prime Jewel and Sheryl Crow both opened shows for Phair, and while they have surpassed her in the fame category she has no hard feelings. “After an adjustment, I really saw my place. Now I’m proud of how my lyrics have been noticed and the affect they have, they stir things up. I’m a little bit of a troublemaker without meaning to be,” she told Neva Chonin. “I know what I did caught hold in the culture and spawned a lot of other stuff, but it wasn’t just me doing it; I was symptomatic of something in the world.” It seems no matter how hard she tries Phair will always be remembered for turning so many heads with Exile. Phair is sometimes surprised that people take her lyrics so literally, “Most of my friends think those things, they just don’t put it to music and sell it,” she told Music Choice Magazine’s Mitch Rustad. In the end Liz Phair may not sell as many records as Madonna, or be on as many magazine covers as Jewel, but her music speaks for itself and is worth a listen. As for Grammy, who continually seems to like decorating the shelves of artists who sell 5 million albums, I say why not Liz Phair, give me one good reason. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
