"imaginary accomplishments..."). anyway, i feel like the underlying latin american touch makes the song a tragic sort of testament to a man who tried to cover up his roots. enough for now... and johnny if you still are in desperate need of something live or rare or whatever, email me and i will see if i can help you. I didn't agree with every point you made, but I agreed with much of your post, and I appreciated your thoughtful take on the themes. I think what makes a piece of work "classic" (whether a song, a novel, a poem, a painting) is the many facets it presents. They mean something different to each person who encounters the work and contemplates it, and thus it endures. Wouldn't it be a dull world if the fruits of our best efforts could only be interpreted in one way? (If t'were so, ugh, stop the globe, I want to get off.) "orange and BLUE, green and PINK" -- I have a feeling it's no coincidence that blue and pink are the traditional colors for newborn boys and girls. More evidence that the song is indeed about son Nick, perhaps still unborn when she first came up with the lyrics? Maybe she avoided red because, well, it's a pretty graphic color when you're envisioning giving birth to your first child. LIZ PHEST: for those asking for info, is July 9-10-11, in Chicago. Let me thank Nicole, Leslie, and the others who have championed this *more money* cause... What I explained to Nicole in #wcse is how much it is costing me to make and send these CDs. Let me break it down for everyone to see: $2.00 --> This is for the tape fund (to raise money for the purchase of these fabled WCSE tapes) $2.00 --> The cost of 2 blank CD-Rs (to burn the tapes onto them) $0.89 --> The cost of a double-CD jewel case (to house the CDs) $0.69 --> The Jiffylite bubble mailer (to mail the CDs) $1.21 --> The postage to send the CDs first class (to get to your doorstep) $7.00 --> The total rounded up (actually comes out to $6.79) That's the minimum I need to keep me from going bankrupt. I have over 100+ folks I still need to burn CDs for, and I'm sure there are some stragglers/procrastinators/newbies who will want the CDs too after I post this. So, to help me out, if you could please send a little more $$$ (if you haven't sent $7 or more already), I'd really appreciate it. If you can't afford to, that's okay, I'm not making it a requirement. Only if you can... :) Sheesh, and to top it all off, I'm sick now. Hey All, Please forgive me... OK, I hate it when folks post like this -posts that are not relevant to everyone or even pertinent Liz topics and such. But I have to tell YOU since no one else would understand this. I had this incredibly vivid dream last night that I was at a Liz show at a bar in Chicago and there was this asshole sitting behind me making rude comments about Liz. I kept giving him dirty looks but he wouldn't shut up. All of a sudden this guy in front of me (in the first row) turns around and puts the rude guy in his place. It was Jason. I was floored. And sitting next to him was Craig. Turns out, all of the people sitting (yes, we were all sitting - -for some reason -in folding chairs) around me are from the list! And somehow this ignorant Liz-basher had seated himself in the worst possible spot (for him) -- in the middle of all of us. Just then Liz walked onstage and she knew all of us too (?) and thanked us for coming. She thanked Jason for all the work he puts into the page and the list and the tapes and all for her. Then she says to the asshole (even though she wasn't around before, when he was being rude) "what are you doing here? Like-don't you have somewhere else to be?" and started her set. (with Erecting a Movie Star). Now, mind you, I've never met anyone from this list, so I don't know what any of you really look like. But somehow in this dream I just knew who everyone was - I recognized them by face. And I was almost star-stuck, so to speak. I found it interesting the songs Liz is choosing to play. Look how she starts the show: Chopsticks Fuck and Run Johnny Feelgood Then, she lightens it up with Mesmerizing before returning with Flower. Gee, do you think she's going for shock value? It's interesting how a lot of people try to run from their stereotypes and others just stick to what was honest to them personally. Liz seems to be the latter. On a personal note, am I the only one who's really sick of Flower? It's just not something I want to play for anybody. Oh wow, can you believe what she said? It seems like if you play a song like Flower for somebody, that's all they'd remember is that Liz can sure talk like a sailor. I think I have a possible thread here. What song would you like people to form their perception of Liz off of? I think for me it would be Stratford-on-Guy. It's not my absolute favorite Liz tune. That would be May Queen, but Stratford is the perfect combination of phenomenal lyrics with a catchy and very unorthodox song. Oh, and for everybody who wants to flame me for being tired of Flower, please do. Flame me as hard as you can, but I just ask that everybody else who agrees with me flames those people and we can start the end of the world that everybody is telling us is coming in January, 2000.
