And before Liz I would get > defensive and pissed--- but now, after Liz, I really think I would think > about the statement (as she did) and figure out if I was worth talking > too. i think you are misunderstanding this. i don't think she is really agreeing with him when he says she's not worth talking to. liz writes: "and it's true that i stole your lighter and it's also true that i lost the map but when you said that i wasn't worth talking to i had to take your word on that." she concedes that the first two accusations are true, because they are concrete things that did happen. but she is only taking the last accusation _on faith_, because it's a value judgment and she can't prove that it's true or not true, she can't argue about it. i agree that she thinks about the statement afterwards but i think it is not so much an assessment of her self-worth as fear that he really doesn't love her anymore. and i don't think this song is about an abusive relationship, or even necessarily a jerk. i think it is just about the crumbling relationship of two people who keep inadvertently hurting each other's feelings. "but if you'd known how that would sound to me, you would have taken it back and boxed up and buried it in the ground..." that's not abuse; it's not that he would have hurt her and then had some great make-up sex, it's that he wouldn't have chosen to hurt her in the first place had he known how badly it would hurt her. she is still deeply in love with him ("and the license said you had to stick around until i was dead, but if you're tired of looking at my face, i guess i already am"--the saddest lines in the song, in my opinion); his feelings for her are unclear, but i think it is certainly not an abusive relationship. huan-hua ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 10:45:24 -0500 From: Katie Brown Subject: craig craig you sent your ss post to me and sent a message to Katie ():0 to the list! He says that it looks like he can get enough tickets that I could come along to the Hole/Marilyn Manson concert here in Vancouver last night. I'm a huge Hole fan but MM just doesn't do it for me. At the last minute I decide I just have to see Hole. They're such a great "rock" band. The set, set list, props and stuff......they were amazing. Courtney kept begging everyone to be her boyfriend because she was jealous that everyone had a crush on Melissa Auf de Maur (because she is Canadian). Melissa was incredible. This little gal just pounding away at the bass, propped up on speakers. Once Manson had finished screaming (although the "show" was pretty cool, the 'music' is a little pointless) we were able to head backstage. Our comp tickets and passes were provided by the drummer of Marilyn Manson (who happened to be my buddy's cousin) so it was kind of cool when were going through security and he's saying "Let them through, they're my family". The only band members back stage were Eric and Melissa from Hole and then the drummer and guitar player from Manson. All I eaked out to Melissa was a little "I think your great" with a beauty gaze. She's so beautiful and all I could think about was that part in True Romance where Patricia Arquette writes on the napkin, "you're so cool". She was truly "so cool". The whole thing started with some immature idiot who wrote something on how my page sucks. That's ohk, I can take that, but it was worse than that. This jerk went on about how American forefathers died for us women to be educated and stuff like that. Then, it continued with him calling us whores, sluts and called Liz a fruitcake. Sorry, I'm not having that in my guestbook. I was able to track down this guy to get a general idea on what he was up to. He responded, saying it was him and three co-workers who were surfing the web and found my site to be annoying and irritating, so as a joke, they thought of having fun by signing as the forefathers, pope and other dead people. Like I can take that as a joke when they call us women sluts? I don't think so. These people were dumb enough to keep going back to my page and sign my guestbook cuz it was annoying and irritating? Well, that's ohk, but don't sign such obscene things please! Hopefully, the case is closed, papers are burned and we can get on to other things. Another note, Melody, I saw Jawbreaker. The movie was ohk, but the dead girl's name was odd. Liz Purr. A good movie to check out is Nicolas Cage's 8MM, but it's pretty disturbing. This was mentioned before (#56) by Kate Conners. But there wasn't any follow-up. I'm pretty thrilled. Why? Because here Liz only gets mentioned sporadically. Nothing compared to the abundance of bus-stop and train-platform billboards seen everyday all-day. Given Liz' incredible beauty (physical in this case), this unimportant feature could spur interest. The Smiths - "The Queen Is Dead" I think you're being a little closed minded in your selections. First off, while all three of Liz's albums are head and shoulder above anything else out there today, I would only classify "Exile" as a masterpiece, mostly cuz of it's groundbreaking status. Secondly all of your selections could be classified as whatver passes for "alternative rock" these days, when there's a wealth of other genres out there (although I would consider anything involving Morrisey, and depressing brit pop in general, as "crap rock", but that's just me). My list, in no particular order, tries to get a good sampling of ALL the essential albums out there: 1. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (quite possibly the most perfect album ever made) 2. Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville (see above) 3. Muddy Waters - King Bee (the best album by the king of Chicago blues) 4. Metallica - Master of Puppets (the originators of real metal) 5. R.E.M. - Murmur (my only other agreement with your list) 6. Poster Children - Junior Citizen (best indie/college rock band around) 7. Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet (P.E. made rap legit, way before the Beasties) 8. Elivs Costello - This Year's Model (the finest in the roots of "alternative") There's stuff I missed (there should be some good "classic" rock (Stones, Sabbath, etc.), some country (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams), classical (Wagner, Mozart), etc.), but a limit of eight, made me pare it down. Others may disagres with my choices within genres, but I don't think anyone can disagree about a well rounded musical background. these I feel are groundbreaking albums that changed the music scene for the better. I used to be closed minded about music. In high school I was a metal head: Black t-shirts, denim jackets, hockey-haircut, the whole 9 yds. In college I got a radio show (KWUR St. Louis - woo-hoo) and I started playing all metal. Then one day I noticed the whole back catalog we had and I started sampling it. By my senior year I had the most eclectic show on the station. I'd play Tori Amos, Slayer, and John Coltrane in the same set, with the only unifying theme as good music. Broaden your horizons, it'll make you much happier (although it makes trips to the music store hell). My list, in no particular order, tries to get >a good sampling of ALL the essential albums out there: I believe that Tom was only asking for albums that each of us felt were essential, it wasn't about proving how eclectic anyone's taste is. You may feel that his selections were "close-minded", but if "alternative rock" is what he most enjoys, why knock it? It's all a matter of personal taste, there is no right and wrong. Would it appall you to know that most of my collection consists of "alternative" artists? While I enjoy listening to music by artists from other genres, I don't necessarily feel the need to own their albums. I'm sure everyone on this list has one type of music they favor most, that dominates their collection more than any other. And there's nothing wrong with that, as far as I can see. I myself just buy the albums that I know I will likely enjoy and play the most, and if most of these fall within a single genre, than so be it. A lot of the time, it seems to be that those who go out of their way to prove how wide-ranging their taste in music is are just as snobby about it as those who only listen to one genre and adamantly refuse to listen to any other. It doesn't necessarily make one any more open-minded to like a little of everything, when they look down on those who don't. It's as bad as the hardcore indie kids who snear at anything released on a major label. It comes off as posturing, like somebody has something to prove. Anyway, honestly, I don't enjoy heavy metal and most hip-hop I hear wears on every single nerve; most classical music does nothing for me either. I predominately like music that is classified as "alternative". I don't think it makes me closed-minded at all. That's all fine and good if someone wants to get "a good sampling of ALL the essential albums out there", but we're all going to predominately like one genre or another, so it's natural that most of our choices will stem from what we favor most. Anyway, all I'm trying to say is that no one here really needs to be told to broaden their horizons.
