Okay, so when Steve first posted about the now-infamous vacuuming housewives, I made my dweeby little comment, as seen in the subject line. Steve and I thrashed things out off-list (and had fun in the process, I hope). Now he has offered up a great explanation embedded within a truly *excellent* post that I enjoyed thoroughly - I mean, he quoted one of the only cover- arcticles of Liz that I actually own (Request, my other is Music Choice - thanks Stacey) and fed us 2 big bits of insider Liz info. Yum. So I will explain that my lame joke was really more of a "where's meredith" thing? Her sigs always had a line from Wodehouse's "Very Good, Jeeves!" I miss her posts... So there you go. Leslie P.S. Did Steve say that Gary Gersh was the president of Capitol? Well, now I did so it's been said. That's it... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 05:38:14 PST From: "Chipko Arnold" Subject: S-K in the UK So there's a lot of Sleater-Kinney fans here, well they'll be gracing the British shores at the end of April (hey, isn't that when....). They're opening for someone first, then they're heading off 'round europe and then they're coming back to headline in early May. Can't remember who they're opening for, sorry. As for Cornershop stealing from Liz, i'm not sure. Brimful of Asha always reminds me of Tom Verlaine's Breakin' My Heart. It's got the same opening guitar riff. Most of Cornershop's stuff is borrowed, so it wouldn't surprise me. I think the album is over-rated and very hollow. someone once said it sounded like a demo and that wraps it up. As for "borrowing". Never Said sounds a lot like the Soft Boys "I wanna destroy you". That's one of the reasons i listened to EIG when it came out as i figured Liz for a Soft Boys/Robyn Hitchcock fan. Still all quiet in the UK. Waiting for the call as to when LP will come (and she will). Must go listen to Wilco some more, especially the solo acoustic version of "Gun". (no, actually i live for it) i also want to thank you for focusing your reply on the money aspect and not the ideological point, that helps the ladies' case even more. (yes, sarcasm) Second: on that liz and abuse and women's lyrics article that was pretty interesting. i mean, you could read liz's lyrics in johnny feelgood a hundred different ways (i.e. the genius of liz) like if i wanted to defend the idea that some women just need to be hit (thank you jimmy stewart!) i could point to the song. if i wanted to say that women like the bad boy thing from a purely emotional standpoint, i could point to the song. if i wanted to say that liz is full of shit and demeans the real problems that battered women face, then i could point to the song. if i wanted to say that the song has nothing to do with domestic issues but is really about heroin abuse, i could point to the song. (think about it, hard core drugs work really well in the place of "johnny") where this leaves us i'm not sure. maybe that is just more stuff about power relationships in general. what i mean is that outside of the S&M thing, songs about abuse, at least quoted in the article seem to be more that women talk about getting hit and men talk about hitting. well, that's pretty scary, but reality based by and large. and i don't think that the women songwriters out there are moving away from the violence = bad thing at all. they're maybe saying consentual violence ie. S&M is individual stuff, but i didn't read anything that led me to believe that a whole crop of strong women are out there saying its ok to beat the crap out of someone else (girl/woman/boy/man/ anybody). - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ----- And it seems like I've got something to prove, But in some ways it's just something to do. Subject: we're the chipmunks I forgot to say, in my post from yesterday, that I really liked Ruthie's story about her stay in Ireland. Whoa! That all kind of rhymed! Cool. Anyway... as I was saying... Liz Fest (I, too, cringe at the "Ph" instead of "F" deals used in association with Liz): I would really like to go. The chance that I WILL go is kind of... well... I don't know the numerical value of it. Basically... Well I talked to the University of Michigan yesterday about something, and they mentioned that they had made some sort of action on my application (ambiguous. Don't know if they made action on ACCEPTING me or not), and since all my shit is sent home, my mom received an envelope from mich that she didn't open but forwarded to me. S he said it was pretty fat. So... it could be an acceptance. ANyway, if i'm accepted, and they don't revoke that (I'm really paranoid that they will because I have certain things that might make them reconsider their decision to accept me, if that is what they decided), I will either be going to summer school at Mich. or abroad through mich. Abroad meaning either London or Dublin. Anyway... if I go to summer school at Mich, and I have my car, then I can drive myself to chicago. If I'm in London or Dublin, I can't. IF I'm HOME home, I can't go because even though I'm 19, I'm still not allowed to do such rash things as travel by myself or even with someone to chicago to meet a bunch of people I don't actually know, except for maybe two of them if they will even be there. SO... Who knows if anyone will be *graced* with my *presence* at this Fest'. And if you are graced, will you be graced, then, with my PHIST? ;) I had to say that. Will my Phairweathered Phriends eat Phish with a Phork? Are you Phreaks? Can you Phathom it? In all Phairness... Look at "PH". Why does that combination of letters equal an "F" sound? Okay I'm just looking at that. Anyway... Phuck it! I think I'll Phlap my wings and Phly away from here. I would do one of those top Phive thingies, but there are too many girlysounds. If there weren't girlysounds, I could pick a top.. PHive. (I'm wondering if anyone is realizing yet why that "PH" thing bothers me. Is my post beginning to bother anyone? It's Phair for you to say. I won't Phight you.) So... Nicole's top FFFFFFFive, not counting Girlysound tracks, just cuz I don't want to have to... FFFFFFactor in that many songs into my thought process: (In no particular order) - -Stuck on an Island (I accidentally typed "Suck on an Island" at FFFFFirst) - -Waiting for the Bird (That's why I piss off drivers... so they'll flip me the bird... I'm waiting!!!) - -Blood Keeper (I think I'm influenced by Steve) - -Hurricane Cindy - -Awww fuck. I don't know what to put for the fifth choice. I'll just put something. It's not that I can only think of four, it's that... oh I don't know. ummm........... Freak of Nature this is a long post, and i apologize for subjecting you to it. At a couple of the shows I've been at and read about Liz has said so herself prior to playing the song. My understanding is that Liz is talking about a relationship where someone knocks you down - like when you think you're great or you are always right - verbally, not literally - physically - knocks you down. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 15:37:25 -0500 From: Kaufmann@IPFW.EDU (Kaufmann,Mike) Subject: Johnny's punches This sounds like something that comes from "thin" listening. I'm sure Liz is not talking about physical violence here, but emotional callousness on Johnny's part. He's a jerk but she loves him for it. Still weird and twisted, but not the same as getting slapped around. It's just the perverseness of the relationship--and the reasons it "satisfied" her that are her focus here. If we take the knocking down and dragging around literally here, we have to see Liz being dragged by his convertible car--and I doubt too many undertand the line that way. No, it's an exaggeration. Similarly, she's pushed Johnny's jerkiness into the physical. Mike >>snippet from review-- That analysis could be way off-base, too. Phair may not be singing about real powerlessness. ``Johnny Feelgood'' is more likely an ode to the joys of emotional slumming -- living periodically in the danger zone while maintaining a basic grasp of oneself. And that tension is part of falling in love. (The line ``I could take this in doses large enough to kill'' recalls Joni Mitchell's romantic lyric, ``I could drink a case of you/ And still be on my feet.'') And, as Powers asserts, pleasurable pain between consenting adults is different from abuse. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 15:58:31 -0500 From: "Raffel, Mantra" Subject: Bubblegum Bubblegum >In V2 #55 Leslie wrote: > >"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" >"bubblegum, bubblegum, in a dish >how many pieces do you wish?" >"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" >p.s. does anyone remember the hand motions to this ditty when played with >only 2 people? The only CDs that anyone has made prior to now are the Girlysound discs that Patrick Oltraver was selling some time ago. These CDs that Ken is making right now are of the studio tapes he was able to purchase, and the material is all from the sessions for WCSE. Everyone who contributed to the tape fund is getting a set of the CDs from Ken; those who didn't will still be able to get cassette copies when we tree these recordings in the near future. For all those who are curious, I'm still working out the structure for the tree for the three Chicago shows, and I should have it posted before the end of the weekend.
