Seems like she made a big fan out of Mr. Holmes when he interviewed her on 120 minutes several months ago. Chicago Magazine, March 1999 One Minute section Q: Now that you're a mom, you've been hanging out with little kids. How do they like your music - explicit lyrics and all? Liz Phair: A lot of my friends have children that are addicted to my albums! They actually sing along. I don't know what they're going to do with the lyrical content. Q: You've said you enjoy a night "fabulousness," but mostly in L.A. Where do you go in Chicago? A: Usually when I'm here, I have to be a responsible in the moring (because of Nicholas), and forget about the other stuff. But what's the last fabulousness thing I did? I went to (local record label) Drag City's New Year's Eve Party. We left at 2:30 and people were just arriving. Q: Do you remember what you wore? A: Yes! I wore knee-high black Betsey Johnson leather boots, a really hot, short gray BCBG kind of jumper thing, and my special new Nars really-red lipstick. Q: Sorry, I'm a boy - I missed a few of those brand names. A: (Laughs) I know, but that's half the pleasure. How dare you ask what i wear, because you're going to get the full answer! Nars lipstick. Let me look up the color. (Pause.) Scarlett Empress! Q: A photographer once egged you on to show your breasts during a shoot. How intense is that pressure? A: There's a whole lot of pressure. At the bottom rung it's just a bunch of sleazy guys exploiting a young talent. When I was doing Lilith Fair, Sarah (McLachlan), Natalie (Merchant) - everyone had a creepy story like that. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1999 13:58:16 -0500 From: Mike Marlatt Subject: Cornershop This is a bit of a weird one but I was hoping that someone who had the Cornershop album with "Brimful of Asha" ("Everyone needs a bossom for a pillow") could do a cross-reference. But a rebellious crop of female singers isn't so sure. ``It's something about the greatness of art trying to unravel this stuff -- what does it mean to be a man? The great male rock stars have always explored that . . . What do you do with a song like `Rape Me' by Nirvana's Curt Cobain?'' Ann Powers New York Times music critic KATE SULLIVAN STAFF WRITER It's been a big year for women in pop. But what about the subject matter women are addressing? Sure, Jewel might be obsessed with her hands, and Natalie Imbruglia with her broken heart. But other women are fascinated by violence between men and women. Domestic abuse. Granted, we've come to expect a certain amount of that from such emotional muckrakers as Tori Amos and P.J. Harvey. But never before has the subject seen such concentrated exposure, from such popular artists, and with such ambivalence. Listen to Britney Spears' current Top 40 hit, ``Baby One More Time:'' ``My loneliness is killing me/ I must confess I still believe/ When I'm not with you I lose my mind/ Give me a sign/ Hit me, baby, one more time.'' Other songs seemingly soft on male-against-female violence include: ``Hit so Hard,'' on Hole's new album; ``What About,'' on Janet Jackson's; Alanis Morissette's ``Sympathetic Character''; and Liz Phair's ``Johnny Feelgood.'' New York Times music critic Ann Powers is one of the country's best thinkers on gender and rock. She says it is inappropriate, and beside the point, for critics to make moral judgments about these songs. Her -- and their -- job is to figure out what the songs are saying and what that might signify about men and women's lives in general. Abusive relationships aren't exactly a new topic. Phil Spector fans may recall the Crystals' creepy ballad ``He Hit Me (and It Felt Like a Kiss).'' Powers also mentioned Billie Holiday's rendition of `` 'Tain't Nobody's Business,'' in which she sang with more than a little defiance that if her man knocked her around, it was her own matter. Men songwriters have alluded to abuse both overtly and covertly, from the Beatles' ``Run for Your Life'' to the Rolling Stones' feminist-baiting ads for their album, ``Black and Blue,'' which featured an image of a woman spread-eagled, tied up and bruised to Nirvana's rape-nightmare, ``Polly.'' And, of course, the issue is a source of perennial tension among hip-hop artists; in lyrics and liner notes, both male and female rappers continually ask their comrades to quit glorifying violence against women. What's interesting about the recent crop of songs is that many are written by women, and they resist the accepted contemporary, feminist terms of debate (violence = bad). Part of the MO behind rock songs dealing with abuse is, of course, the tradition of rebellion in any form. And the current crop of women singers and songwriters is hardly the first to claim pleasure in pain: Romanticized self-mutilation by way of drugs, razor blades, guns, love and anything else is at least as grand a theme in rock as violence against others. In Powers' view, the rebellion is only magnified when women sing about it. ``In the punk world there's a definite connection between S&M sex and the music -- and S&M is different than abuse,'' she says. ``When rough sex is the subject, there's an aura of consent, and that is a defiant gesture - -- particularly in the '70s, when the feminist bottom line was that sex and music had to be gentle and women couldn't be transgressive sexually or musically.'' That may be the genetic strain that produced Phair's ditty. At her most recent show in Minneapolis, the Stones-head said with a sly grin, ``This song is about my sexy college days.'' (``. . . He knocked me down, started dragging me around . . . And I liked it.'') The effort isn't totally convincing, because we know that either Phair has never experienced abuse and is envisioning a fantasy of love with a bad boy, or (less likely) she really enjoys being knocked around. If she does, she's been lying in all her interviews. That analysis could be way off-base, too. Phair may not be singing about real powerlessness. ``Johnny Feelgood'' is more likely an ode to the joys of emotional slumming -- living periodically in the danger zone while maintaining a basic grasp of oneself. And that tension is part of falling in love. (The line ``I could take this in doses large enough to kill'' recalls Joni Mitchell's romantic lyric, ``I could drink a case of you/ And still be on my feet.'') And, as Powers asserts, pleasurable pain between consenting adults is different from abuse. ==================================================== _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? The early cuts of the album (including the widely-distributed 1996 Shelved Demos/Studio Recordings) were anything but "wafty" and "softy," so this description -- and the lack of enthusiasm on the Capitol (read: Gary Gersh) end -- seems *most* unusual. I'm sure someone out there will take offense to this, just because I'm the one writing it, but I have a hard time picturing housewives (unless they're pretty Rrrockin' housewives, but I don't think that's what this person meant) cleaning house to "Bars of the Bed." I'm sure many will be discussing the 1997 running order of _whitechocolatespaceegg_ in the weeks to come, so I'll just leave it at that. The recent mention of the "Polyester Bride" video reminded me of a piece of info I'd been unintentionally hoarding... You may have noticed that no director credit is given to "Polyester Bride," and the reason is because Liz was unsatisfied with the job Kevin Kerslake (there's a Name) did. She later re-edited it and added the stock footage herself (I *knew* that she'd played a significant creative role in the video -- you can just tell). So that's why no director credit is given. I got this from Matador co-pres Gerard Cosloy. One last tidbit -- if you look in the new issue of Alternative Press, in the section on VJs (lousy profession), under Dave Holmes (great guy), you'll notice his answer to the question "Who's the coolest celebrity you've met?" is Liz Phair. He says he's now an official obsessed fan. You could tell when he met her on 120 Minutes a few months back that he was not only giddy but also knew enough to ask her good probing questions and praise the great "Supernova" video (always a favorite). I wonder how long it'll be before he joins this list.
