After playing 6'1, Liz did an impression of MJ (in a very high voice) saying something like "I really like those old songs, but how about some new songs." Then she broke into something from Wcse (unfortunately, I can't remeber which song). Most of the crowd, including myself, had no idea what she was talking about. After that song, Liz explained that she was making fun of Michael Jackson, at the suggestion of her bandmembers. I assume it was a popular quote from MJ. I'm not an MJ fan, so I wouldn't know. In retrospect, I understand why Liz made the joke, as she has said that she prefers to play her more recent work, which better expresses her current thoughts and emotions. I guess you had to be there to really appreciate it. Sean ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 09:47:56 EDT From: o0lqc@qcvaxa.acc.qc.edu Subject: Liz Phair literary mention. Well, anyway, the author, who is a music journalist for the Irish version of Rolling Stone called Hot Press, mentions Liz Phair and "Exile in Guyville". McCarthy states that Guyville is perhaps the best soundtrack for being dumped ever recorded and that she played it over and over to give herself strength to go dump her bad boyfriend because of all the female empowering messages in Liz Phair's music. I can't say that the system is trying hard enough, though in my opinion, teachers are. What else besides motivation and a passion for teaching and children drives teachers? It's certainly not the money, I heard a teacher say once that she could make more money working at Burger King. It is about money for the system. The system is content to feed schools just enough money to produce a few kids that will go on to become great, and let the rest fall through the cracks. They're taking advantage of a teacher's drive and a student's commitment to learning. The school system in my county is even making kids buy their own scissors and paste now. So i have to agree that the system needs plenty of work, but i think you took that statement too personally. It didn't seem like a comment on teachers. But it's not the fault of the system that "people are shitty writers." It's the people. People are stupid. Even the supposedly educated ones. Take a look at my university's student-run newspaper (www.technicianonline.com): the writing and subject matter are horrific. d. www4.ncsu.edu/~djkim2 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 10:12:56 PST From: "Chipko Arnold" Subject: All around the world >Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 23:14:14 -0500 >From: "Valerie J. According to both Lounge Ax and "New City" newspaper, the fashion show rumor is not true. For those of us familiar with Lounge Ax and their on-going legal and licensing battles with the city, the idea that they would misrepresent a show in order to make some money is very much not their style. Plus, a friend of mine here at work used to work at "New City" and he called a few of his friends there who all thought the rumor was preposterous. I really don't know what to think now; my news was from someone who I consider a very reliable source (a Matador employee), yet two people have now posted that there is to be an actual Liz Phair show. I really don't want to miss this if it is in fact a real show; I don't, however, want to spend the money and time traveling to Chicago if it isn't. Is there any way for someone to contact the Lounge Ax and have one of their staff email the list with the confirmation that this is not a fashion show but a Liz Phair concert? I'd really like to see it in writing before I decide anything. The source I got my news from is incredibly reliable, yet everyone else's sources seem credible as well. In the meantime, I'll try to find out anything I can on my own and I'll post if I do find something out for sure. I have two things to say in response to your post. One, you are right that parents are increasingly doing a horrible job educating their kids and some of the blame should rest with them, not to mention the fact that most kids don't want to learn, which may well be their own damn fault. Two, I never blamed teachers, but the system. I respect you a great deal just for being there, and working hard despite being paid a ridiculously small amount and having to work with kids who don't want to be there and aren't prepared mentally or emotionally, and with an administration that is probably totally out of touch with what they need to do to make the whole thing work (which is not to suggest that I actually have the answers, but I never encountered many people who did when I was in school). That being said, you must realize that you are not in the vast majority of teachers. I'm sure you respect many of your colleagues, but I went to pretty good public schools by California standards (which places them just above the zoo in terms of educational content), and I have to say the majority of my teachers, especially the ones who had been there a while, had become complacent and really failed to teach me very much. I hope you remain as dedicated as you are now, because our schools need all the good teachers they can get: they're a rare commodity. As far as fixing the system goes, I don't have a clue what to say. Liz content: Got CDs from Ken yesterday. This part is apparently about a different celebrity in each issue, and features what other celebrities have said about the celebrity of the month. So Liz said something about Madonna, like she's cool and always reminds her of some new thing to "try to wear." #2: A Liz ticket stub in "Trend-o-Rama." This section always occupies a small corner of the "Scene" section and lists some strange fads and trends that readers write in about. Some chick, obviously under the influence of drugs, carries a lunchbox as a purse and has it decorated with concert tickets. So the lovely Seventeen staff duplicated her effort with some Roseland stubs of their own, and the most prominent one in the photo is Liz Phair from October (?). You can hardly read the other stubs - there's Garbage and PJ, but that's about it. At least some Seventeen staffer has good taste.... #3: my sister swears she saw another Liz-related thing, but she can't remember where. keep your eyes peeled.... Leslie P.S. Re: the part of my 2 previous posts that kept vanishing: I was trying to copy a segment of Peter's messages in which he mentioned making a giant list of all the songs Liz has ever recorded. Hence: 1. Is it too late to sign up for the tape tree? Please? 2. Thank you Ken! I really can't wait! =) Your hard work is appreciated. and 3. I noticed some dispute about feminism. Sorry I missed the intinatl quote, but wondered if this would help any. It's from "grrrls: women rewrite rock" by amy raphael. There's a whole chapter on Liz and she says: "To me, feminism means that I believe in women, in their potential, their words and their value. And I am disgusted by people that don't share my opinion. IN that sense, feminism is, to me, the "of course" clause. 'Should we be paid the same amount?' 'Of course.' 'Should we have control over our bodies?' 'Of course.' To me, it's shockingly logical. Last year, I was asking people whether they think women could be geniuses which, to me, is 'Of course!' I have met them many times! And you would be so surprised how many men run in the indie music circle, who run around with women who are clearly in control of their lives, literally do not believe that women can be geniuses. They think it's the province of men. They think it's literally a type of brain that men posses. Maybe, one in a million women comes along who actually has these capabilities, but clearly is very male-like." Ok, it goes on for three more pages. If you haven't read this and would like me to post the whole thing on my page, let me know. But you get the idea. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 19:23:50 EST From: Oh4sythia@aol.com Subject: Liz goes for the gold - w/o me Before I address the topic in the subject line...
