The Richmond show was my first time seeing Liz live, so it was obviously a fantastic experience. But, I thought Liz was better in Fairfax. She was really working the crowd and even told a brief Michael Jackson joke:) 6'1 and Wcse were great. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 11:14:45 -0500 From: "tree shadow" Subject: liz tickets oh the dilemas in life. like craig i am about 2 hours away from chicago. now the questions-1.since i missed out on the columbus show do i drive for the opportunity of this one.2. i have a test on the next day i cannot miss. 3. i have no tape player in my car which means indiana radio. well, i guess you only live once. see some of you on the 18th. Just an interesting piece of info that i thought i'd share. . . A friend of mine picked up a copy of the "Chasing Amy" soundtrack at a convention. Guess who's on it???! Ahh yes, Liz Phair! "California" is on it, to be exact! :) I was so excited when i saw it! And the soundtrack seems really cool, with good music and quotes. Just thought i'd let everyone know- and if you see if somewhere, pick it up b/c it is supposedly VERY rare and i will buy it from you (as if you would give it up)!!! :) On an un-related Liz note, is anyone here a big cartoon fan? I am looking for some sound files or pictures of the Superfriends. Does anyone know of any cool sites that i could find stuff at? Please email me seperately! THANKS! :) Julie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:05:13 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Connolly Subject: Richmond concert review From Sunday night's Richmond show. This evening at the venue-formerly-known-as-Richmond's-Mosque was a study in contrasts. Introverted, stage-shy, indie rock legend with 3 albums selling less than 750,000 altogether opened the show for the extroverted, stage-storming, megastar who sold 23 million copies of her last two albums. About the only thing the artists had in common were the number of people in each band - five. Liz Phair and band took the stage a little after 8 o'clock to a surprising amount of support from the audience. (The best most opening acts can expect is polite indifference.) For the first two songs, "Chopsticks" and "White Chocolate Space Egg", Phair seemed a little disconnected from the audience, alternating between looking at the ceiling and the back of her eyelids. Things picked up with "6'1"," the lead cut from her first album and steadily improved through the rest of the show. Phair and her band performed eleven songs in 40 minutes, with only four from the current album ("Polyester Bride," "Johnny Feelgood," the aforementioned "White Chocolate...," and "Perfect World.") Phair really only spoke to the audience twice, once to say she wore something blue because it was raining, and again to ask, "Can I sing a dirty song?" With that, she launched into a sexy rendition of "Flower" from her 1993 debut album, the song that gave her the infamous potty-mouth reputation she still hasn't been able to shake. Although a solid performance overall, it seemed Phair still hasn't totally conquered her legendary stage fright. Alanis Morrissette's band took to the sparsely decorated stage promptly at 9 p. m., lit in red backlight a bit rough on the eyes. They launched into "Baba" from the new album, the one with the heavy Zeppelin-esque underbeat. The crowd loved it, as they did everything she performed - Alanis could do no wrong in their eyes this night. She traveled every square inch of the stage during all of the energetic songs, never staying long in one spot. For the slower numbers, Morrissette tended to be front and center at the microphone, hands moving in some kind of cross between sign language and guitar chord fingerings. Through the whole extravaganza, which lasted two hours and included two encores, she didn't miss one of her early hits. " You Ought To Know," "All I Really Want," "Hand In My Pocket," "Ironic," and "Head Over Feet" from Jagged Little Pill, her third album, and the movie soundtrack single "Uninvited" (City Of Angels,) were duly trotted out and devoured by the mob. (Not surprisingly, Morrissette failed to perform anything from her first two albums, recorded in her teen Paula-Abdul-clone years.) The latest album wasn't ignored either. In fact, Morrissette covered nearly every song from Former Supposed Infatuation Junkie to the wonder and delight of her fans. "Thank U" was the most powerful song of the evening, bringing people up to the center aisle to wave their thanks and appreciation, and causing grown women and children alike to weep. By the end of the concert, it was obvious the crowd was ecstatic over the headliner's performance and unimpressed with the opener. Considering Phair's significance in the whole angry women of rock "movement," (said Ira Robbins in his Trouser Press Guide To '90s Rock, "It's hard to imagine Alanis Morrissette making Jagged Little Pill without Exile In Guyville [Phair's first album] as encouragement."), that's more ironic than a fly in your wine. - -Mike Connolly copyright February 1999 Ninevolt Magazine _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I heard someone mention that they got in by bringing a parent, but does that usually work? Any information would be greatly appreciated, since I will be really upset if I have to miss Liz. Liz has sold more than 750,000 combined of all three albums. Both _Exile_ and _Whip-Smart_ have been certified gold, for sales of 500,000 copies each. Three months after _whitechocolatespaceegg_'s release, it had sold 160,000 copies, according to Gerard Cosloy, and I'm sure it's sold around 250,000 copies by now. Perhaps you're just going by SoundScan figures, but do remember that these numbers are not representative of the sales for an artist like Liz, who has a strong indie following, especially with the first two records. SoundScan primarily tracks sales in the big chain outlets; very few indie stores are part of the system. Also, for quite a long time, sales through record clubs weren't counted by SoundScan, although they are now, at this point in time. If anyone's curious in exact dates, _Exile_ was certified gold on Wednesday, May 6, 1998, while _Whip-Smart_ had been certified gold almost two months earlier, on Friday, March 13.
