Thanks for the tip on the show. I talked to Lawrence at the Lounge Axe today. He said they won't determine until next week if they are going to sell Liz tickets in advance for the March 14 show. And it is a show, not that celebrity rock star plays favorite records thing that is on the Lounge Axe website. As Keely wrote, you otherwise, line up at the door before the show. Lawrence said people line up an hour or two before the bigger shows. Worst case scenario, we get there early and chill. Now, Liz cancelled the Dallas show in November. I'm a rocket on the launching pad. I'm ready to go. My boss is so cool. I told her about the Liz show and she offered me her free Southwest Airlines ticket. So, I get to fly free! All I need is a ticket. Can someone grab me one if they go on sale? I'll send you the dinero. If they don't go on sale, let's plan on meeting at the Lounge Axe. Stupid me, I missed >it. I was wondering whether either a) somebody in NSW taped it or b) >anyone knows whether Rage shows new release videos two weeks in a row. a)yes b) Chances are it will be shown again this week in the wee small hours of Saturday morning. They tend to show the newest videos first, followed by the previous weeks new ones, and so on. My guess is it will probably be on about an hour into the show. They usually also do the same in the wee small hours of Sunday morning after the guest host. Check the web site that Stuart mentioned from this Thursday to find out for sure if it'll be on again. Brian ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 19:25:59 PST From: "DarkSide oftheMoon" Subject: guitar tuning >You need to understand that Liz does not use *irregular* tuning (this >goes for you, Dark Side of the Moon, too) on many songs at all. >(we'll get to my definition of "standard" in a moment) There is no "personal" definition of standard tuning. It's an accepted protocol. The definiton of standard tuning is as follows: Standard tuning, EADGBE Anything other than that is "irregular" hence we have open tuning, drop tuning, etc. Drop D DADGBE, "Dropped D" Open C CGCGCE Open D DADF#AD Open G DGDGBD Open E EBEG#BE (can be played as Open D, capo 2) Also, in some tunings it may be ambiguous whether a string is to be tuned above or below its normal pitch. In this case, the octave in which each pitch lies may be indicated; for reference, standard tuning is EADGBE (octaves: 223334). >but are non-diatonic chords given names? of course they are.... >(I should point out that I am an untrained guitar player, I've never >had a lesson in my life, and everything I know I learned from >watching performers or reading this 100-page guitar manual I have or >stuff on-line. So if my guitar terminology sounds really retarded, >that's why. Sometimes thats the best way to learn....I can sit down and listen to an album and figure most of it out. And usually I don't take the time to sit and figure out the technical name for a really weird chord, I just play it. Thanks for the post...I'm gonna sit down and see what I come up with from what you got. Its a pain to have to re-tune to play different songs on the same album...I usually just stick with the standard tuning and play from there...Thats not good tho because then I'm transposing chords but hey, I get lazy.... If you want a good shareware guitar program check out GCB. You can plug in chords or pick the notes you want and it will tell you what chords they form. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Feb 1999 00:13:34 -0500 From: "Cynthia Nagle" Subject: Old hat? So tell me to shut up! Dear Lovely Digesters, Pardon my being a bit behind in the digests -- I've been out of town, doing trade shows and running nonprofit board meetings. Sorry to drag up old threads that appear to have passed, but... re: #34 (I think), why do I have the funny feeling of being baited? Or that my intelligence is being insulted? Yes, Steve, I'm going to pick on you again. So lay down and take it like a man. <> <> "In the olden days" (and even today), statements like these were considered ironic, when following a passionate defense of "good taste" through "indie snobbery." Please, someone, do reveal The Definitive Secret, that we who don't follow the indie music scene or the music club scene aren't "getting" in Liz Phair's music. I would love to be enlightened, and finally "get" what the arbiters of good taste are "getting"... otherwise I will never be able to understand the Significance of Liz's Work. Or have any standards. I see now that only those who follow the indie scene can truly understand and appreciate Liz's music. Those who don't, or who happen to also like some "lesser" (or, heaven forbid, mainstream) artists, obviously can't. I'm quite traumatized that I, and probably many others, don't qualify -- despite a college education, a highly developed critical eye in the arts (including but not limited to music), being fairly literate, and being a bit older than many list people, so as to actually apply broader life perspective and experience to my understanding and appreciation of music. "Getting" Liz Phair's music implies, to me, a certain level of maturity and experience to relate to its themes. Indie-rock afficionados can't claim this territory as solely their own. And if many of the posts to this list from self-proclaimed "typical indie rock boys/girls" are indicative of their levels of maturity and experience, please spare me any further meaningful indie insights. I'll content myself with being semi-oblivious to the scene, like many intelligent people I know (including one Liz Phair, who "wrote to impress a certain indie scene in which she was never taken seriously." I feel a Catch-22 coming on here.) <> Yes, you should! Go ahead and do it! I don't disagree with that at all. Just cut away the "snob" part of it first, so that you don't tar the rest of the world with the same brush. I'm waiting for Peter Washington to give us the definition of "Lilith" from Webster's, so we all know exactly what that 4-letter word means. (Peter, are you coming to Liz Phest in Chicago?) I have actually been able to play the opening of "Canary" once in a while (sometimes I forget how, and I get frustrated and give up). And "Chopsticks" is the easiest, of course. I try to play and sing at the same time (since just the piano part alone can get a bit boring and repetitious), but Liz goes *so* low that it throws me off! Otherwise, that is the one to start with. Honestly, I've never even attempted "Animal Girl" -- I just might have to go tickle the ivories right now!... ;-P Take care, M e l o d y "I wish you all the joy that you can wish." +++++William Shakespeare+++++ "Music is the perfect type of art. It's apparently a small, intimate club setting, and for all of those who have been hesitant to see Liz open for Alanis, this might be your best chance of seeing her. "I have no idea on ticket availability, so if anyone manages to find out, please pass along the news to the list. I would definitely like to go myself, so if anyone in the Chicago area would be willing to pick up a ticket for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Please let me know as soon as possible, so I can get to booking the time off work. Thanks!" Please keep me posted, those of you in the know. As I live far far away from civilization, I don't want to travel a million miles to see Liz open for Alanis...but for a show like this - I'm there!! Honestly. Like Jase stated above, if anyone in Chicago could find it in their heart to pick me up a ticket as well, I would be unbeleivably grateful. Hope to see some of you there!!
