My friends and i got back from the LIZ PHAIR SHOW (with alanis morrisette). It was really good! Liz Phair played for 40 whole minutes. She "spontaneously" played Flower. We had such great seats! third row, on the floor! My friend, whom we'll call "E" is an Alanis fan (she knew all the words). We stayed until Alanis' encore for her sake. It was really damn loud. Huge speaker bank 6 feet from our heads. You know how your vision blurs whenever the bass drum is hit? Ms. Phair was s-e-x-y. I like how she alternated playing guitar and playing with herself. She thinks Michael Jordan played high school basketball at Chapel-Hill...or she was baiting us. Liz Phair is responsible for about 50% of my hearing loss. d. www4.ncsu.edu/~djkim2 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Feb 1999 04:48:49 PST From: "DarkSide oftheMoon" Subject: liz the guitar goddess > But when it comes to playing Liz, thats a different story. >After watching a Liz video boot, I'm convinced that I'm doomed to >never be able to play her stuff with any degree of proficiency. >Theres just too much jumping around the fretboard for my liking. >Sure there are a few easy songs... Hey all....gutiar tabs for Liz.... http://olga.net/ http://www.btinternet.com/~gez.gtr/liz.html First off let me say hi to all!! (special wave to katie and jen) been too long since I've posted but work has been killer. Anyways.. I agree....There are easier Liz songs but Liz's music is not easy...now I will be the first to admit that she is no eddie van halen as far as speed or technique.. but Liz has a style that is so unique its baffling sometimes...I know shes got to use some drop tuning and I do believe she makes up some chords that nobody has charted before. I've played guitar since like 1978 or so (gawd am I that old!?!?) and some of her stuff still eludes me. The easier songs are the ones consisting of your basic barr chords. The open tuning stuff and off the wall songs I'm still working on... I wish I could make it to the Chicago Liz fest but damn....I don't think the wife would allow it...although.... Wife - "Hon, the babies college fund is missing. Did you take it?" Me -"Um.....Gotta go to the store...be right back...." Any Floridians (ahem... katie?) maybe thinking about a mini-Liz fest of our own? Might be a small gathering but hey we are devoted! And yes Ken...we are waiting in anticipation for our CD's....I think I will send more money in....seems like alot for so little money... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 11:28:50 -0600 From: "Jenny Sayler" Subject: tape tree questions I know an FAQ was put out on this, but I dont understand the dolby thing. You will note that I am using way more words than I need to express my thoughts. Sorry about that. Just take out every other adverb and it should read fine. So, here's the thing: I want to be a branch (I'm coveting that CD-R copy, and it would make me feel like a big [tall?] man besides, distributing Liz to the populace like, I don't know, Robin Hood), but I am incredibly unsure of myself when it comes to audio equipment, so I'm not sure my dubbing capabilities are good enough. My dad is a fancypants-stereo kind of guy, so I'm assuming it's a good stereo. And I make tapes all the time, and they sound fine to me. I just lack confidence in my judgment of stereo equipment. So I'm going to write down in my clumsy way *exactly* what I've got going on here, and you're going to judge it for me. If it's not good enough, you're going to say, "Peh! I laugh at your puny stereo!" and then I'll know. Okay? Here we go with the little form. Full name: Meredith Robbins Reliable E-mail address: rrob247@ix.netcom.com Street address: 2906 Marshall St. City, State, Zip: Falls Church, VA 22042 Country: United States of America Dolby preference (no, B, C): ain't got no preference (don't know enough to have a preference) *Precise description of dubbing equipment: Let's see. I gots me a Teac (or is it TEAC?) CD player. It's, um, got buttons and stuff on it. It plays CDs. Then connected to that I gots me a Teac/TEAC tape deck. It's only got one deck. It has features like Play, Rewind, Pause, Record, and Recording Volume. It has a little button that says "DOLBY NR" on it. Right next to that button are two buttons that say mysterious things like "Metal" and "Normal" on them. I do not mess with those two buttons; I figure whatever I'm doing is "Normal." It, um, makes and plays tapes. The stereo console and amplifier are Crown, and I've been told that they are fancypants. *Number of copies you're willing to make: It depends when I would be making tapes. Until the 20th of February, I'd only be willing to make, like, 5. After the 20th, I'd be willing to make maybe 10. Please make sure you fill in all the sections of the form that are applicable to you, which will depend on if you are signing up as a branch or a leaf. This information is needed in order for me to determine which leaves and branches should be assigned to one another. The trees are set up geographically, so no one has to send their blank tapes and postage any further than is necessary, which cuts down on the amount of time it takes for everyone to receive their copies. Also, I have received a few questions about the quality and source of these shows. All three are audience DAT recordings, and, in my opinion, are of great quality. I will be uploading some j-cards on the mailing list website that everyone can print out for themselves, which will contain all of the relevant information about each show, including the track listings. Once again, the sign-up period will be over at the end of next weekend, although the sooner I receive the completed forms, the better. I forgot to mention that the three shows are all between 82-86 minutes in length. If we go ahead with CD-R copies for the branches, they will be split up between four discs. For everyone else, they will fit on three 90-minute tapes. Hey guys, I just got this excellent bit of news passed along to me by Ken Lee. According to the Lounge Axe website, Liz will be playing there on March 14th. It's apparently a small, intimate club setting, and for all of those who have been hesitant to see Liz open for Alanis, this might be your best chance of seeing her. I have no idea on ticket availability, so if anyone manages to find out, please pass along the news to the list. I would definitely like to go myself, so if anyone in the Chicago area would be willing to pick up a ticket for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Please let me know as soon as possible, so I can get to booking the time off work. Thanks! Hi everyone, Here's some interesting, late-breaking news... On the Lounge Ax (a Chicago club) website, it has Liz Phair scheduled to perform on Sunday, March 14. This is not part of the Alanis Morissette tour, but an entirely separate show. The Lounge Ax is a really small club in Chiago, famous for big name bands and little indie bands playing there. Compared to The Vic Theatre, the Lounge Ax is a super small club. An intimate setting, indeed... Oh, by the way: the Lounge Ax site is at http://www.loungeax.com Thanks to Martin Hertz and the Lounge Ax for this info... It's also on my updates page at my Liz website... I had several accidents with e-mail throughout December and January, and I think that's where we missed out. I know he visited my site once, but he didn't sign the guestbook, so I can't get any info from there, and I dn't remember his name. So... won't get anything from me. Sorry kids and adults. :( Also, sorry about spouting about men the other day. But hey! they deserve it. I got the "not now" today when trying to talk to one. Sigh. Subject: One other thing I remember a while back, there was a thread pertaining to the songs "baby got going" and "only son." Seems people on the list were divided between songs. I'm personally an "Only Son", but anyway. So a while ago, like maybe two weeks, I put something on my site, a mini poll about that whole dispute, but only 7 people besides me voted ever. ANyway, you can still vote if you feel so inclined (www.angelfire.com/ca/DontWalk... then go to the main page, it's up near the top). But the status right now is 5 to 3, with Only Son in the lead. Nothing, of course, can stop you from voting over and over for one song, thus falsely giving a song the lead, but that's dishonest! Okay. - -Nicole ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Feb 1999 00:37:34 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Attention UK Liz fans!
