On a (semi) related note, I couldn't get "Carnivore" out of my head over the weekend. Went on a skiing trip and every time I started downhill - "I guess it started off slow...But it's picking up speed...And it's gaining on me...Like a carnivore". If good sense hadn't won out over massive amounts of alcohol, I'd have been hearing verses from "Fuck and Run" as well - but I've said too much already... NP: Nothing. It's just that the ones who do are often ignored by the mainstream. Radio, in my opinion, only seems to consistently embrace "earth mothers" like Sarah and Jewel. But there's tons of ladies out there who play lead. Look at Corinne from Sleater-Kinney, or Patty Larkin or Jen Trynin or Lita Ford or Nina Gerber or Juliana Hatfield. A lot of other ladies play lead on records, but don't in concert because it's hard to and sing at the same time. Case in point - Michelle Schocked and Aimee Mann. Not to mention the unbelievable rhythmn work of singers like Shawn Colvin. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Feb 1999 08:24:24 PST From: "Lucas Johnson" Subject: [none] Hola Phriends, First up, Sleater-Kinney is cumming to Texas in March! Maybe some o'y'all wanna go see 'em with me? Jorge, Amy, Mr. Human Cannonball?! :) I don't know anyone else, like in real life, who has even heard of them, except through me, so if I don't go with some of y'all, I'll be goin' by my lonesome. (Which I'm ok with; shed no tears for Lucas.) They'll be in Dallas on the 9th, which I'll definitely catch. Then Austin on the 11th, Houston on the 12th (according to KRS' web site.) Second, I was driving around listening to Liz (one of my favorite pasttimes) and I noticed how much cooler the Girlysound version of Soap Star Joe is than the Guyville. You know how you can listen to a song a lot, and you *think* you know how it goes, but then you hear it a different way? In this instance, I always thought the guitar part in the verse of Soap Star Joe was really frantic. Fast and jerky. And it ranked near the bottom of Liz's stuff. And the way I heard it on Guyville kindof carried over to how I heard it on Girlysounds, even though they're quite different. aNd then the other day I'm listening to Girlysounds, and there's this nice rolling groove going, it reminds me of riding horses :|, and now I'm totally getting off on Soap Star Joe! What the FUCK! Thirdly, you know that interview segment a few digests back where Liz chooses Buffy over Ally McBeal? And she's really dissin' on the characters on Ally McBeal and how self-conscious they are, and she just wishes they would all die? I don't know, that struck me as kindof an extreme reaction, and I wonder if she doesn't react so strongly against that self-consciousness because it's something she fears in herself. I mean, her music creates a picture of her in my mind that is very self-conscious, especially on Girlysounds and Guyville, maybe less so on whitechocolatespaceegg. Now that she has a little boy, I think she sees her past selfishness as a negative trait, one that has become a part of her Shadow, and she projects it on Ally McBeal and her lovable cohorts. Or maybe she just really detests Ally McBeal. I don't really have anything else interesting to say, so you may wanna skip the remainder of this post. (Do I mean to imply that the first part of my post WAS interesting? God, I'm vain.) Ok, so I don't have anything else to say. i've been messing with e-mail for over an hour now anyway, at $6 an hour, and my boss tells me there's filing to be done. :P Love, Lucas ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 11:29:00 -0600 From: "Jorge (George) Cooper" Subject: Liz dream trick Hey kids, try this at home, 1) I stumbled upon a little dream trick. Late last night, I was watching a bewitching, mind-altering Liz tape that was made for me by the ubiquitous Steve Kisko. That night, I had a Liz concert dream. I had a backstage pass and was sitting just behind the band. Janet the backup singer was singing the first song while Liz waited in the wings. I know Spanish, and Liz was talking in Spanish with me. What does that mean? She gave me an autograph. Steve, she signed my book!! So, if you have Liz on the brain just before sleep, you too can have a lovely Liz dream. 2) Now that Liz is writing more songs, this comes to mind. Remember David Bowie's Space Oddity. Great song. But he also did a good sequel, Ashes to Ashes, in which Major Tom is a junkie "strung up on heaven's high, hitting an all-time low." I wonder what Liz song would make a good sequel. What character from a song would we like to see again. Any comments? Or, he said, obviously desperate for a new thread......What subject would you like Liz to write about? I think she should write songs about food. I don't why I feel that way but I do. TMK, maybe we could give Liz something to write about with your Lizphest-gone-Lizwrong warnings. By the way, I think you've been reading too much of the New Testament with your end-of-the-world musings. I understand Nostradamus was also a Liz Phair fan. 3) Cindy asked who also enjoyed the great movie Boogie Nights. How about Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. I saw Wilco a couple of weeks after the movie came out, and Jeff dedicated a song to monster man Dirk Diggler. Chipko, have you seen Wilco live? They are hilarious and have a lot of fun onstage. They'll hammer out song after song, and then suddenly burst into a thundering version of the theme from Deliverance. 4) Sleater-Kinney is coming to Dallas in March. On advice from the list, I will attend. 5) The last few days I've been inhaling What's Up Matador ? which has many tasty gems. I've taken advantage of others (figuratively, of course) but haven't given back to the list that much (guilt tone) so if anyone wants a tape made of What's Up Matador, Email me. My name is Eric and I am 17 years old. I am a HUGE Liz Phair fan...she is so awesome! Here's the story of how I heard Liz (which is not THAT easy to come by, sadly enough)...anyway, I had heard OF her and had wanted to listen to some of her stuff for awhile and then I read she would be on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno one night so I thought "hey I'm gonna check this chick out". So I watched and recorded her singing "Polyester Bride" and immediatly fell for her! I watched that performance over and over and then a week or two later I happened to see her on MTV's 120 minutes and I saw the "Whip Smart" video...which I totally loved! I loved that song toO! so of course the first album I bought was "Whip Smart", then "Exile", then "Whitechocolatespaceegg". I can't truly say which is my favorite but I've been listening to them all a whole lot lately. Okay, I'll shut up now and thanks for letting me on the list. -eric == "You could be my Silver Springs blue-green colors flashing" -Stevie Nicks _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Totally! And people still wonder why I like Liz so much. Um...I dunno...cuz she's Liz! Ohki.....to pass time I thought it would be interesting to put together a tape of comparing Liz's songs to other artists. This is basically based on Hey! That's My Line page on my site. Anyhoo, I was quite surprised to discover that Fantasize and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away sounded alike in some ways, not just for the phrase, but also from the musical point of view. I dunno and then I put together My Bonnie and Black Market White Baby Dealer, oh well... not that I'm gonna bore everyone. Sigh...... the tape is very interesting though.
