Hey all, So I was surfing the other night(checked out Robbie's page, very nice!) and I was at the CDNow site. I was checking out a review on Higher Learning and it said that Liz was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Preformance for "Don't Have Time" in 1996. I seem to recall the question of Liz ever being nominated for a Grammy. Was this ever resolved? If not it kind of is now. Maybe I am crazy and just don't remember if someone said this. In any case I rarely post so I figured this would be a good time. By the way, even though this has nothing to do with Liz, did anyone see The Thin Red Line? I wanna know if there is anyone in the world who liked it as much as I did. I am having a hard time finding people who did. Have a nice weekend. Perhaps they didn't give you warm fuzzies when they disagreed you, but they were perfectly civil. This is what we call mature discussion. Sleater-Kinney have a new album due on 22/2/99 (i'm a brit remember) and it's called "The Hot Rock". there's a couple of slower songs on it and there seems to be more Corin/carrie shared vocals, which sound great. the single is a double a side"a quarter to three"/"Burn don't freeze". The first is quite slow and dreamy and the second is fiestier. Talking of dreamy... it's a great record label. It's latest release is by a band called Ninian Hawick with an album called Steep Steps and one of the tracks "scottish rite Temple Stomp" is fantastic. It's got bagpipes, a singing waitress and loud guitars (only briefly, but brilliantly). A must. On a personal note, I think more people should follow Ruthie's example and fancy Brit guys. I can't wait to hear the comments. > >Have a nice day! >TAD > >( see jamtv.com) Actually, Tad, I could care less whether Liz likes Alanis' music or not, and I'm sure the others on this list who don't particularly care for Alanis feel the same way. We're not exactly blind followers of Liz who will automatically like anything she says is good. Liz has many times in the past praised artists I don't care for, but it's never changed my assessment, one way or the other, of those artists. Liz could, for example, say that she loves Hootie and the Blowfish, but that's not going to change the fact that I think their music is horribly bland and cliched and it does nothing for me. Please give us all a little more credit -- we're not a bunch of sheep. I really do believe that those on this list who do not care for Alanis' music simply just don't like it. Nothing Liz says is going to change how we feel. Music is a personal thing -- what's right for Liz isn't necessarily right for the rest of us. By the same token, Liz could slam someone whose music I really love -- for example, Jen Trynin -- but that's not going to have any effect on how I feel about it. And, you know, if we all liked the same things, the diversity we witness among the members of this list wouldn't exist. Again, it's all a matter of personal taste. It's funny, though, because Steve Kisko and I have had this same discussion a few times off-list, and there's a lot of music Liz has said she loves that we just don't care for. I mean, Liz has admitted that she likes songs like "Gettin' Jiggy With It" and "Ghetto Superstar," songs that make me cringe when I hear them. Even knowing that Liz likes them, that doesn't stop me from having to change the station when they come on. I just don't like those songs. Liz loves Madonna's _Ray of Light_ album. I've listened to it several times and it left me cold. At the same time, Liz would probably hate a lot of the music I listen to. That's cool, though. I don't need her to say that she likes something in order to validate my musical tastes. Why is it so hard to believe that those who don't like Alanis actually don't like her, and it's not because they feel, for one reason or another, they shouldn't like her? One interesting and not really related thing: Liz has said in interviews that without friends telling her what music to check out or actually handing her the albums, she wouldn't know a lot of the "cool" (acclaimed, underground, adventurous, whatever) music she likes. She said that when she's left to her own devices, she's stuck with VH1 and the radio to find new artists. Liz may be an incredible musician and songwriter, but she doesn't follow the music scene too closely and she doesn't feel the need to keep up with things. And as Steve and I have discussed, just because Liz is incredibly gifted as a songwriter and artist, it doesn't always translate into her having a more distinguished taste in music herself. I mean, that Will Smith song isn't exactly at the same level as Liz's own output. Anyway, sorry if this comes across wrong, but I just thought the implication that those of us who don't like Alanis's music would now be jumping on the bandwagon just because Liz does was very insulting to all of us. First off, I'd like to thank Rachel for posting the Liz interview from jamtv.com to the list yesterday. I really enjoyed reading it, and I'm quite thrilled that Liz is already talking about going back into the studio. I really didn't anticipate Liz doing any recording for a while yet, so this really is great news. I'd love it if Liz were to release another album before the end of the year, but at the same time, I'm not going to get my hopes up too high -- _whitechocolatespaceegg_ was released over two years after its first tentative release date. I'm really intrigued by Liz's description of the songs she is writing as "beautiful dark stuff." I was trying earlier to imagine what they might sound like, but couldn't really come up with any ideas, other than that this next album may be more stripped down sonically than _whitechocolatespaceegg_, and the songs may have a similar vibe to that of "Easy," which is one of my favorite Liz songs. I think part of it may because that album has a real history for me -- it's really connected to certain people and events in my life. I do love _Celebrity Skin_ though, but I find that it's not nearly as consistent in terms of quality, and there are a couple of songs I still haven't completely warmed up to, which has more to do with the production and arrangements than the songs themselves. I really love "Reasons to be Beautiful," and have heard that it may be the next single, in which case, if it is, I hope they chop the last minute or so off for a radio edit (everything after the "It's better to rise than fade away" part). It almost kills the entire song for me, which is a shame, because I love everything up to that part. I've seen "Polyester Bride" quite a few times now and they still play "Supernova" from time-to-time. I hope that at some point they will repeat the Spotlight that they aired a while back on Liz, so that those who missed it will get a chance to see it. As for Q107, they've never really played Liz much in the past -- I don't think they've touched a single of hers since "Supernova." 102.1 would be a little more likely to play her -- they were playing "Polyester Bride" for about three weeks leading up to the release of _whitechocolatespaceegg_, but then more or less stopped once the album was out. If you go to their website , they have a link that you can use to request a song. Now that the single for "Johnny Feelgood" seems to have been serviced to radio, it'd probably be a good idea if a lot of us requested it every day or two and tried to get it into rotation.
