Second, When I was home for Xmas, WFNX (Boston), the best radio station in the nation, was playing Johnny Feelgood, and that was back in December. And they played it during normal rotation hours. Third, I'm risking getting flamed here, but as a devout Replacements fan, what can I do? I have a small grudge against Tom Petty. See, the story goes like this...The Replacements opened up for Petty after the release of their '88 album Don't Tell a Soul. On Petty's next album, there was an oddly familiar line. "...left a rebel without a clue..." was a line in "I'll Be You," the 'mats only "hit" on the radio. Yet, this line appeared in Petty's massive hit (after he toured with the 'mats) "Into the Great Wide Open." That's why I have a little problem with Tom Petty. But that's just personal. Fourth, "I Know It's Not Easy" is the ultimate just got fucked over song. After very recently (beware fresh wounds) getting completely blown off in the chickenshit, "I never actually was interested, so I don't have to call and tell you that I don't want to see you" way, I really identified with that song. Another song that was a little too fitting is "Putting the Damage On" by Tori Amos. "...Cause boy you still look pretty when you're putting the damage on..." That is so true. Getting over someone would be so much easier if they automatically became less attractive as soon as you found out that he/she was a complete fucker, but it doesn't happen like that. You see them around, and they look good, and walk with their head high, and look like life is going their way while you feel like dying inside. Man, my love(less) life sucks...I'm going to be listening to a lot of Joy Division in the next couple of weeks. Speaking of Joy Division (and this has some loose liz connection, I promise), Galaxie 500 does a great cover of "Ceremony," one of my favorite Joy Division songs. I played it on my show this past week, then I told my friend Andy to play it on his show. (See the liz connection, Galaxie 500, like in a video, like in "Stratford on Guy.") Anyway, I hope I provided some valuable info at the beginning of the post, though it degenerated into me rambling (as I always do) about my boy problems... Just into her third decade, and with three albums to her name, the onetime trash-mouthed suburban brat with stage fright has grown up. Smoking pot has been exchanged for swimming laps, while time once devoted to a Mick Jagger obsession has made way for baby Nicholas. However, Phair's most recent album, whitechocolatespacegg, confirmed that some things will never change. Granted, fresh young jimmys have been replaced with fields full of poppies, but Phair's witty, story-based melodies and ever-edgy guitars are a constant. At home in Chicago, Phair is preparing to head south as the opening act for fellow former jilted-lover Alanis Morissette. Just before ravaging Southern values as we know them, Phair takes a moment to partake in some good old-fashioned girl talk. You're touring with Alanis Morissette. Are you a fan of her work? Yeah. I remember at the beginning I didn't want to like it because it was so popular and I resisted it. And I remember driving around and listening in my car and hearing "You Oughta Know" and just finally succumbing to it completely. And the first single, "Thank U," is my favorite thing she's ever done. It blew me away. I literally cried a couple of times in my car late at night driving back home. It was so inspirational. How did you conquer your well-publicized stage fright? I think part of it was that I had all that time off and, so, I was kind of coming out on a new page. Plus, I went straight into Lilith and it was overwhelming. There were so many other performers [and] I was so excited. I'm like a big celebrity-hound. There were so many different distractions. And I got better with practice. When I first started performing with Exile in Guyville, I hadn't done it before and I pretty much sucked. I might have been a natural in certain aspects, but had completely unhoned skills. So it was terrifying. Now I'm more experienced and not nearly as afraid as I was about doing things I'm not good at. I have more enthusiasm because I recognize that this is great. How many people get to do this? Have you been shopping for fabulous new clothes for the tour? Yes! I had a great night last night because I went to this little boutique store and they had pulled this whole rack of stuff for me. It was after hours and it was three women just totally paying attention to me, dressing me up and trying stuff on. Don't you feel when you're wearing the wrong thing you're totally shot? And when you're wearing the right thing, you eel great. You have twenty times more energy. I can actually say to my accountant, "I need this -- this is for my work." My whole problem is you go out at night and the next thing you know you're in, like, black and gray. Are you currently writing songs? Yeah, I'm writing so much. It's kind of beautiful dark stuff. It's funny, but after I put out whitechocolatespacegg it was like another step to not being afraid to say the dark, more disgruntled things. A lot of it has to do with revolving around when I have free time. I'll kill myself because I stay up too late. Late night I love writing. I think I'm going to start recording this month. I have the bug bad, very bad. Do you suffer at all from trying to match the splash that the first album made? Oh, I totally suffer from that because what I think made that album so special is that I came out of nowhere and that I went insane writing that. I had all this passion, which was the sole focus in my life. Plus, I was getting stoned all the time, living a bohemian life. It was like a real madness and it's kind of psychotic, but because I couldn't talk to this man anymore, I decided that Mick's voice would be his voice and I could explain my side of the relationship to him. So I always wonder if I could make that big of a splash now because I'm not willing to sacrifice my life for a piece of art that way -- and that bothers me. That will keep me up at night because I know that I won't go to the edge like that anymore. And sometimes going to the edge like that is what makes those really powerful punches to music. Does the last album have a different significance than the others? You know what, it does. It's hard to say because each one of them has its own significance, but this one's particular significance is that I really felt creatively like I broke through. Images come to mind; like, I feel like I just went from a single stream to a delta and I've got some options now on where I can go. I put a lot of heart and soul into it. It's the first album of my own that I enjoy listening to. The first couple albums, I hear an unhappy person in the voice. When I hear the way I sing stuff it's so washed and tight and I feel so much more free and flying on this album. You mentioned earlier that your songs are actually autobiographical. So, is "Polyester Bride" about a dalliance with a famous man? It's all part of this group that we were hanging out with back then. And some of them were in the John Cusack group, so there was that sense that they were kind of a little more either famous or close to famous. It was like a celebrity group. It's also about searching out people that are more fabulous than you. It's really making fun of myself and my state of mind back then because I was such a little snot. And there really is a bartender Henry. He was looking at me like, "Are you really gonna waste your life with this or are you gonna use your mind to do something useful?" Do you miss little Nicholas terribly when you're touring? Yeah, I'm gonna take him for like five of the days. I took him a couple of times on Lilith, and I took him on part of the fall stuff. I protected him so much, like, "I'll never take my child on tour." But we don't go on a bus, we fly. And he adores it -- "Airport, airport, airplane!" He really does like watching me on stage, at soundcheck, I take him to that. A couple of times I walked him around and I was signing stuff and he just assumed "People clap for us. How great!" He's funny. Are you excited to embrace Southern culture for this tour? I'm really excited to go to New Orleans. I've never been, ever. Of course, I read the Anne Rice stuff, and I love that whole idea of decayed opulence, but I'm sure it won't come true quite that way. It's probably more alcoholic and needs re-shingling. There's something just totally wonderful about that. Can I just tell you what Nick is doing right now? He's climbing on top of my shoulders, climbing on top of my head! He's scaling me like a mountain. I just thought you'd enjoy that. This tree will be to distribute copies of the three Chicago shows from Liz's fall tour. Since it has been quite a while since we've done any trees and we have gotten many new subscribers since the last one, I thought I would take this opportunity to repost the excellent tape tree FAQ that Catherine Molanphy put together and posted quite some time ago. Hopefully this document will clear up any questions anyone may have ahead of time. I will be posting the sign-up form for the tree soon. I know we originally discussed the possibility of making this a CD-R tree, but since only around a dozen people contacted me to say that they would be able to burn CDs, it just doesn't seem feasible. Usually, the participation in these trees is quite strong, and if just 50% of our 900 or so subscribers were to sign up for the tree, each of those dozen people would have to burn over 30 sets of the CDs, and there are four CDs in each set. While some people may not mind burning that many discs, a few people told me when they volunteered that they only wanted to burn a minimal amount of copies. That said, if the sign-ups attract a lesser number of people than I expect, we could maybe pursue the CD-R option then instead. As extra incentive for people to sign up to be branches on the tree, I am hoping to arrange it so that those who agree to make tapes for others will get sets of CDs for themselves. This way we will stay digital for one more generation and everyone will get a better-sounding copy as a result. However, please only sign up as a branch if you intend to follow through on making tapes for other people, and only if the equipment you will be using to make the tapes is of good quality (in other words, no boomboxes or anything of that like, please). If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me. As of right now, I am pretty busy during the week, so don't panic if I don't get a response out to you until the following weekend. Jase ***************** From: Catherine Molanphy Subject: What is a tape tree? I had originally planned to find a well-written FAQ or guide to tape trees on the Web, but I didn't find any that I thought were good enough. (There was probably a good one on the Phish site, but that damn site is so clogged I haven't been able to get on it.) So I'm writing my own; please keep in mind that I am not a super-frequent trader - I only dabble - so some of my explanations may seem a little pedestrian to experienced tape traders. But experienced tape traders are not my target audience; this is intended for people who have never done any tape trading at all and would like to know a little about it. Indeed, I don't think I am qualified to instruct anyone else. What is a tape tree? A Wee FAQ... by Catherine Molanphy * * * * * * * * * Table of Contents A. What is a tape tree? B. How much does it cost to get tapes from a tape tree? (plus some background on the ethics of tape trading.) C. How does a tape tree work? D. How do I read a tape tree structure? E. Once I've gotten assigned to a tape tree, what do I do if 1. I'm a leaf? (plus a tip on sending blanks) 2. I'm a branch? F. Where can I find out more about tape trading? * * * * * * * * * A. What is a tape tree? A tape tree is an organized and efficient method of trading tapes on the Internet. Normally, tape trades are arranged between 2 people. They show each other lists of what tapes they have and then agree on what they want to exchange. There is nothing wrong with this method - much tape trading is conducted in this manner. *BUT*, when there is high demand for a particular tape within an "internet community" (i.e., a mailing list like ours), a tape tree is a more efficient way of getting that tape out to a large number of people. It eases the burden of the person who has this tape and is getting barraged with individual requests for copies. It is also very newbie-friendly - signing up for a tape tree is an easy way to "break into" tape trading. * * * * * * * * * B. How much does it cost to get tapes from a tape tree? Like all tape trading, *no money* is exchanged in a tape tree, save that which pays for postage. In other words, you're getting the music for free. Isn't that nice? [A little background: I've only been involved in tape trading for a couple of years now, but what I've gleaned so far is that tape traders have a pretty sturdy sense of ethics. The basic tenet of their philosophy is that people who make music should receive the profits from the sale of their recorded material. People who create bootleg tapes and CDs and then sell them on the open market are essentially stealing money that should be going to the artists themselves. Therefore, it is immoral to buy bootlegs, because you are giving money to people who are stealing from the artists. That being said, there is a lot of material out there that never gets released by the artist's record company but which the artist's fans really want to have. Copies of this material are circulated freely among these fans, with the understanding that if this material were ever to be released commercially, a true fan is obligated to buy it. The very act of tape trading helps to ease the demand for commercial bootlegging, although some internet communities fight the boots directly by organizing "Beat the Boots" trees: the treeing of commercial boots so that people won't be paying any more money to these companies. (I assume that the basic idea is that if tape trading grows and flourishes, bootleggers will eventually go out of business.) Conversely, tape traders also consider it unethical to make copies of legitimate, commercially released material (like if someone on our list were to make a taped copy for someone else of "Exile in Guyville" or "Whip-Smart"), because they think people should be buying this material in order to support the artists themselves. I'm a little iffy on this last point, because sometimes I think taping of commercially available stuff is a good way to preview that material for people who are on a tight budget (like myself). I have often gotten tapes of albums and then, if I really liked it, gone out and bought the CD later or asked for it for Christmas. I don't want to be spending my hard-earned money on music I'm not sure I like yet. Now that it's possible to put sound files on the internet, I'm sure that it will eventually become the primary medium for previewing and sampling music. (Right now, there is one great source for previewing music: CMJ Music Monthly. It's a magazine which is sold on many newsstands and costs $5.00. In it are reviews of many new albums and a CD containing songs from some of those albums that are reviewed. Please note that I do not work for CMJ (although my brother occasionally writes reviews for them) and am getting no money for writing this; I'm just a satisfied customer. I think their sampler CDs are really fab, and that's the truth. Tpthththtph!!)] * * * * * * * * * C. How does a tape tree work? The basic thing to understand about a tape tree is that it is an efficient trading system which uses a "tree" metaphor to describe how it works. The metaphor is rather simple: a) One person has a tape that lots of people want copies of. This tape is referred to as the SEED or SEED TAPE. The person who has the seed tape is sometimes referred to as the SEED PROVIDER. (If you like, you can think of him or her as the "seed planter" or "gardener" of whatever the hell else strikes your fancy.) b) The seed provider makes copies for several people and mails them out. These people are called BRANCHES or BRANCH LEADERS. c) Each branch leader in turn makes copies for several people. These people are referred to as LEAVES. Pretty simple, huh? Sometimes the "branch & leaf" terminology is scrapped in favor of "parent & child." Choose whichever metaphor you prefer. There is an additional person involved who is the TREE ADMINISTRATOR. This person posts the sign-up form for the tree over e-mail, receives all of the applications, creates the tree structure, and fields any questions about the tree. Sometimes, the seed provider is also the tree administrator. For this "Shelved Demos..." tree, Jason Long is the seed provider, and I am the tree administrator. Last time "Shelved Demos..." was treed, Jason wore both hats (what a guy!!). As with everything dealing with the tape trading, the people running it are always volunteers. * * * * * * * * * C. How do I read a tape tree structure? Here's a little schematic diagram I have painstakingly created for you. If you squint your eyes real hard, it looks like a little tree (or perhaps a bush): LeafA1 LeafA2 LeafB1 LeafB2 LeafC1 LeafC2 \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ | / \ | / \ | / Branch A Branch B Branch C \ | / \ | / \ | / \ | / \ | / \ | / ----Seed---- As you can see, trying to represent a tree in the way I've done above is rather cumbersome and time consuming, but it's helpful in showing clearly the relationship between the various elements of a tape tree structure and how that structure is analogous to a real tree. Once you understand the basic concept, this schematic expression can be tossed in favor of one that is more time and space efficient. Tape tree structures are normally depicted in this manner: Seed Provider Branch A Leaf A1 Leaf A2 Branch B Leaf B1 Leaf B2 Branch C Leaf C1 Leaf C2 Much neater, huh? The number of branches and leaves varies greatly from tree to tree, and sometimes there are more levels than what I've shown in the tree above. What that means is that there will be more than one level of branches: Seed Provider Branch A Twig A1 Leaf A1a Leaf A1b Twig A2 LeafA2a LeafA2b Branch B Twig B1 Leaf B1a Leaf B1b Twig B2 LeafB2a LeafB2b (Please note that "twig" is not a commonly used term.) In a real tree structure, words like "Branch A" would be replaced by the name & e-mail address of whoever is the branch leader. Sometimes only the e-mail address is included, as this is really all the information that is needed. * * * * * * * * * E. Once I've gotten assigned to a tape tree, what do I do if 1. I'm a leaf? If you've been assigned to a tree as a leaf, it is *your* responsibility to find out who your branch leader is (by finding your name on the tree structure) and to subsequently contact him or her or about making arrangements for getting your copy. At this stage you have essentially 2 options for reimbursing your branch for the tape she uses: 1) send her a blank, or 2) arrange a trade. If you are new to tape trading and don't have any boots to offer, then you'll have to choose Option 1. Just tell your branch that you don't have anything to trade, and ask for the address to send the blank(s) to. When you send blanks, you must also include postage or money for postage (the former is generally preferred), because the branch is not getting anything out of the transaction and should not have to shell out for the tape's return trip. You should also include a mailer or a sticky label with your name and address written on it. [The best method for sending blanks, in my opinion, is the following: Put your blank tape into a padded mailer (you can get them at office supply and stationery stores or at the post office) and address that mailer to yourself. Get a manila envelope or any other envelope that can fit the package and write your branch leader's address on it. Take both envelopes to the post office and have them weigh the mailer with the cassette in it and attach the appropriate postage to it. Then put it, unsealed, into the manila envelope and have them attach postage to *that*, seal it and send it off. This way, when your branch gets it all they have to do is dub your copy, stick the tape in the mailer, seal it and send it off.] If you have something to trade, tell your branch leader and offer to send on a list of what you have. He may not be interested in doing a trade no matter what you have, in which case you will have to send blanks anyway. If you do manage to arrange a trade, be sure to settle on what brand of tapes each of you prefers and whether or not you want Dolby. It is good practice to always include as much information about a tape as possible when trading. Track listing, source, concert date and venue, noise reduction, and generation are all good things to provide on a traded tape. Don't go crazy if you don't know the generation, just do the best you can to give as complete a description as possible. You may not care about all of that information, but there are many traders who do, and out of consideration for the trading community you ought to do your best to correctly label the music which you pass on. 2. I'm a branch? First of all, you have to get in touch with the seed provider to obtain your copy. Refer to the instructions for leaves above to find out about doing this... It is your leaves' responsibility to get in touch with you about obtaining their copies of the tree tape, but many branches find it more efficient to send out a group mailing to all their leaves with their mailing address and their preferences regarding trading or sending blanks. It is your prerogative to only accept blanks if you don't want to do any trading just now; you can also decide not to do a trade if you don't find anything you really want on a person's list. If you have any particular wants, a group mailing is a good place to ask for it. Example: "Please just send blanks to the following address, unless you have a really clean copy of 'Girlysounds,' in which case we can arrange a trade." Being a tree branch is a great way to acquire tapes through trading, and I recommend taking advantage of the opportunity. *Never use high-speed dubbing*. I've never noticed a difference, but hard core traders say that the quality of tapes made with high-speed dubbing is very poor compared to tapes made with normal speed dubbing. I know, I know, if you have ten or so leaves, the temptation of high-speed dubbing is great, but for the sake of keeping the tape-trading community happy, resist the temptation. Please refer to the last paragraph on being a leaf for instructions about what written information to include when sending out a dubbed tape... F. Where can I find out more about tape trading? I had kind of a hard time finding thorough literature on tape trees on the net, but there seemed to be plenty of stuff on tape trading in general and concert taping. Here are just a couple of websites you can check out: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mleone/gdead/taping-guide/ http://www.phish.net/taping/ If you still have any more questions give me a "buzz," at , and I will try to answer them.
