Blimey and crikey... It's all go here in London, especially now Ruthie is in town. We had a bit of a mix up with Elliott Smith Tix, which was all down to language problems, well, sort of, it's too long and boring to explain. ES was great as were Quasi - who are thingy the drummer from Sleater-Kinney and her ex-husband (i'm crap with names). ES plays bass for them as well and in return they back him. It's always fun to see ES fans talking through their set only looking up to say "who's that guy at the back, he looks familiar". Sebadoh are good, but i feel they need editing, they tend to go into a mess in the middle of their sets. This time wasn't too bad as it was a shorter set. Saw Blondie on wed being filmed for tv. It was as good as you can expect from these things. Thursday was the Mercury Rev gig. All the other bands on the bill were poor, but MR were great. I do feel that Yo La Tengo would kick their arses right off stage though. Sat was They Might Be Giants (again - twice in one week) and good fun was had by all And last night (sun) was Idlewild. They are awesome. Mix Nirvana/R.E.M./Grant Lee Buffalo up and you're nearly there. It was an odd bill with 2 "rock" bands and 2 dace based acts. Due to this i was out of the door minutes after Idlewild finished, having endured Delakota for 35 minutes i wasn't prepared to "groove" with another bunch of talentless, bland, emotionless wannbe musicians. Give me guitars and turn 'em up loud! So when are the rest of you guys coming to lil ole London? You know you wanna. Now i've met Ruthie, i now know the rest of you must be real. Sorry for lack of LP content. Hopefully some news of Ani Difranco soon. she's playing on 20 + 21 Feb in London, but i've heard she'll be playing live on a radio station about that time (inside info - Ruthie stop laughing). Anyway, when it arrived on Friday after work (mail-order), I immediately quashed all notions of going to the gym and started tearing at the box with the zeal of a 5-yeard-old on Christmas morning. Naturally, a selection of different CDs was on my mind as I connected the speaker wires, and I wanted to test some good music rather loudly. First, some classical to get it over with. I put some Vivaldi into the CD player and listened to the solo violin interact with the rest of the orchestra. Very clear, very impressed. Next, I wanted to hear some bass. I was thinking Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine, or Tool, but I finally decided on "Three Days" by Jane's Addiction. My two roommates had hovered up the stairs to my room to verify my idiot status for having purchased a piece of stereo equipment with no remote, headphone jack, or bells, whistles and lights usually prized by male audio enthusiasts. Knowing that "Three Days" was my one roommate's favorite Jane's song, I fast-forwarded the CD past the opening chords to the "meat" of the track. I smirked with satisfaction as I turned up the volume loud...louder....very loud.... without a hint of distortion. They stood there, mouths agape, looking at each other in wonderment. The sound was so pure, it sounded like I was in a recording studio. Perry's vocals were screaming, not screeching. You see, when you listen to equipment like Sony, Pioneer, Technics, etc. for your whole life and then hear something of a significantly higher grade, the sound improves so dramatically that until that point, you never knew what you were missing. They were hearing it now. After listening to the end of the track and congratulating me on my purchase, my roomies headed back downstairs. Now I wanted to really put it to the test, and there was only one disc that would fit the bill. EIG, song #13. Knowing my speakers could handle it, I maxed the volume almost all the way. It came on, and it was so loud, the floor started shaking and I heard one of my roommates yell, "hey!" I was still listening to the opening chords of "Shatter" when they pounded up the stairs once more - and it was an ear-assault louder than any loft-bedroom stereo had any right to be. Now they could see that I was truly amazed myself, as the loudest music I had ever heard prior to this point was probably in the front row at a Van Halen concert many years back. Not only was this extremely loud, again - - it was incredibly pure-sounding. Clearly agitated, one of them asked impatiently, "What IS this?" I handed him the EIG CD cover, and, as I expected, his brow furrowed in puzzlement, not being able to equate the strange, "who-the-fuck-is this" artist with the unbelievable sound flowing like a tidal wave from my speakers. After a moment he nodded at me, yelling, "oh, Liz Phair, you like her, right?" I smiled and shouted back, "yeah, what do you think?" He said he wanted to hear the rest of the song. I wonder if its on the soundtrack? does anyone know? btw, my new kitten is a she, has been spayed and is still the sweetest, cutest thing ever. although she is always biting my toes. and is stalking my turtles. thanks all who took an interest to help me out! Oh, now I know why no one mentioned anything, the commercial for that movie just came on and it hasnt even opened yet! well, maybe someone will see it and let us know. KB- i will write you and send you the tapes this week, i promise!!!! Lani ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 23:56:40 -0800 From: Alice Springs Subject: Umm... Dilbert + Les Baxter + Liz concerts? Okay, did anyone watch "Dilbert"? I was kind of disappointed considering the show itself was prolly ten whole minutes, leaving twenty minutes for commercials. Also, I had always pictured Dilbert's voice as ... well, different. Has anyone heard of Les Baxter? He was such an amazing musician. I am listening to his music right now, and it is *so* beautiful. Check him out! (Well, he's dead, but his music still rocks) Is Liz still touring or what? I haven't heard any concert news lately. Weren't some of her shows cancelled or something? :-( Take care, *Mel* PS- Sorry for the pointless post...
