I just mentioned that I had bought it and started playing it and after the first few tracks I just didn't feel inclined to listen to the rest. I tried some of the later tracks a few days later and it just didn't draw me in. I didn't say it was crap and I didn't say I hated it, I just didn't love it (and I really love the other artists I regularily listed too). 2nd I like Liz more than Juliana. Lets get that straight for starters. This holds true even though Juliana makes a trip up to Vancouver every year (for the last 5) and Liz has only shown up in 3 hour away Seattle twice (neither show which I was able to attend). But hands down I think Juliana is a better guitar player. Some of her guitar lines are so much more detailed and perfect. Not to mention she was an incredible bass player with the Blakes (And the guitar players out there know how difficult it is to sing lead vocals and play bass). I think that Juliana has really travelled deeper into discovering what she can do with a guitar. One of the best interview I've ever seen with her was on MuchMusic.. She was talking about how she's "found that if you actually 'attack' the guitar when your playing it you can bring out unique and more intense sounds". It said so much about how her guitar craft is a science to her. I think that Liz made it very clear in the Sessions interview that her science is her lyrics, not in her guitar playing. Even on some of Liz's best power guitar songs (Supernova and What makes you happy come to mind), she's got someone else playing the lead guitar on both the album and live. Liz's guitar lines are simple and flawless, but they're very simple compared to some of the riffs that Juliana puts out and they certainly don't have the same energy that Juliana puts into them. An analogy: "Live Through This" is to 'EIG' as "Celebrity Skin" is to 'WCSE.' Courtney's voice on 'LTT' is much more raw than on the new album...which is a good thing, but musically, 'CS' is much stronger. I'm surprised you don't like the first (title track) song, though...radio overkill?...I love the Shakespeare quote ("pound of flesh") and the rest of the lyrics. It would be a *regional* Liz Phest, not a *mini* Liz Phest. I know the California contingent is planning something, which makes infinite sense to me: California is a long way from Illinois. There's no need to act like if it's not in Chicago, it's some small potatoes offshoot of the Real Liz Phair Deal. There's just no way I, for instance, can make it to Chicago. I'm sixteen years old, for crying out loud; I have, like, parents who cook me dinner and buy me clothes and sign my field trip permission forms and stuff. What they *don't* do is let their only child take off for Chicago for a few days to hang out with some people she's never met (not that I'm not sure you're all lovely people). So people: if you can't make it to Chicago for whatever reason, don't despair! You're still cool! Plan a Liz Phest in your area. I'm picturing a web of Liz love stretching from coast to coast (and across the Atlantic and/or Pacific, if any international phans want to plan something). I'd love to coordinate a get-together in the Washington, DC metropolitan area--the National Mall might be cool, no? (Hey, Kerry Miller, wanna help?) Drop me an e-mail if you're interested. Steve also posted a few posting guidelines--with which, let me just say, I agree completely. Perhaps we should all bear in mind our audience before we click that send button: with every post, you're e-mailing, what, 900 people? Reread your posts and ask yourself, "Do 900 people, the vast majority of whom I don't know personally, really need to know this?" I'd hate to see us have to turn to, say, ritual spanking of the clueless (actually, as Jase could tell you, this is a craven lie), so let's all be courteous posters. Wait, was that courteous? If not, you have my permission to spank me--in a figurative sense, of course. O.k check this ---does anybody(everybody) have Sarah Mclachlan Surfacing?? Well, I bought it the day it came out and forgot all about the multi-media portion of the cd. I recently got a cable with which I can hook my computer up to my stereo. I got it to play mp3's, but I popped Surfacing in my cd-rom (with the intention of just listenting to it) and the multi-media thing came on my screen. Well let me tell you, I was really exxx...ahhhh...cited (happy). There is an amazing interview with Sarah where she talks about recording the album and writing songs and what not. Anyways, if you have the album and havent checked out the multi-media portion of it, make sure you do cause I guarantee you will love it. p.s. sarah rules ( and she has a new live album coming out soon) It would be really cool if Liz did a similar thing on her next album. Oh to Nicole---you are totally correct ---Liz's harmonys --kick ass, second to only.....actually I would say on par with sarah's. I love the chorus in Never Said. Its really cool cause the chords go in a four step thing (G-A-D-C) and the harmony vocals only step 3 times so it really contrasts. Also the background vocals in the last verse are very sweet. Speaking of EIG, does anyone out there have Exile on Main Street by the Stones? If you dont, then you all should get it!! It is in my opinion ( and many others) the finest rock and roll album ever recorded. Liz picked the best to model and EIG would not be the album that it is with out its predecesor. The overall style of the 2 albums is very similar, from the raw production to the vocal harmonys( yes, Keith Richards can sing!!). The way the guitars sound is also very similar, really dry and raw, little effects or reverb. Plus Liz manages to play some low down dirty mean rhythm guitar, ala Keith. I do give Liz the edge for being the bad girl that she is and writing all those bad ass dirty lyrics. Mick does hovever, get pretty raw on EOMS. I hope Mick has a copy of EIG, cause he would definetely love it. Well, I'm gonna upload some tunes from Exile on Main Street to a server (I'll include the address when I upload them) and you can all download 'em (if you have FTP). I guarantee most of you will want to buy the album after you hear a sample. It is not like regular Stones tunes that you might all know like Satisfaction or Start Me Up. There was only 1 hit single from the album (Tumbling Dice) and it is a masterpiece.Nuff Said on that. I think that is about it for now. --- uhmmmm, yep that is all. Go Leafs Go. My roommate was watching Leno, and I overheard him talking about how Cindy Crawford is pregnant. Which is weird only cuz I've been playing Hurricane Cindy over and over today. But I guess that's just a coincidence, and not really all that weird.
