Kreusler" Subject: Thoughts on Lizphest... Hmmm...*SIGH...* I hate to piss on the campfire (HA!), but I would like to officially vote for a downtown/hotel arrangement for "Lizphest" in Chicago - I will answer "Bryan's" list for my initial reasons...(sorry, Bryan - don't mean to be so confrontational, it's just that I disagreed with everything you wrote): First off, I hate camping (PERIOD) I NEED technology in a ten-foot radius of my person. If I can't eat what I want, when I want, my stomach constricts and I start loudly cursing at people in German. I also *don't* need a campfire to "groove." Who says you can't "groove," at say, a bar? (Note: I'm not a "groover")...where the alcohol flows endlessly, poured from the hands of well-trained professionals...Now, I can't afford a weekend at the Drake, but I can certainly afford a room at a decent hotel. Plus, with a good number of companions, these costs diminish rapidly. Beds, or even thin hotel carpeting, to me, is/are more comfortable than sleeping on a tarp in the woods on the cold, hard, ground...I couldn't care less about birds "tweet-tweet- tweeting." Jeez, I hear enough of that when I visit my mom up in NY, where she has two, count 'em - TWO - cuckoo clocks in the house. Bryan can still bring his guitar for entertainment, and I'll buy a postcard with a view of the lake (or I'll just listen to 'Stratford on the plane)...Communal? Spiritual? This is 1999, not 1969, my young friend. I may listen to my share of the Dead and Phish, and I may have certainly considered camping while I was in college - but I guess as I get older (27 at last count), the spontaneity of my decisions just isn't what it used to be. I need structure, boundaries, less insanity, etc...I seriously doubt that a "banquet hall" would have to be the venue of our Liz-worship. Since we all seem to enjoy music in heavy doses, I think we could find great things to do in Chicago where an entire mob would not be arrested on sight (remember the parade in Ferris Beuler's Day Off?) I've never been part of a mob like this, so I say, why isolate ourselves in the woods when we could DOMINATE a concert or a bar with our masses, feeding off of the instant camaraderie? ...Cheaper to camp you say? It may appear so. But check out the catalogs from REI or L.L. Bean sometime and you will find that camping gear is not cheap! Hell, it's fucking outrageous! I live in a city (DC), and as such, I don't own an SUV (Stupid Useless Vehicle) packed with a tent, sleeping bag, pillow, backpack, etc. in anticipation of a semi-cross-country-camping-trip. Unless someone wants to pick me up from O'Hare and drive my ass to the Phestival site, my vote is in for everyone to meet at a hotel downtown. Downtown! (It's ALL downtown, George...Petula Clark? The song? Oh, never mind...) "my friend brian and i checked out this show they recommended last friday night, the webb brothers (they are american) and after queuing in the rain fro 2 hours, we got in and it was fucking amazing!! great great show. (oh, there was also the fact that i was so drunk my really cute indie rock boy brian had to tuck me into bed after taking care of me for like an hour... ;) )" Hey, guess where i was Friday night!?! It's a small world fer sure. I saw the Webbs last week and they looked good, but the sound was a bit off and on friday they sounded good, but i couldn't see them. I got ot the gig late (i'd been to see another band before) and couldn't get in to the back room (Ruthie will understand) so i gave up being crushed and hot to stand in the bar area, where i was next to Lou Barlow of Sebadoh. This was good, apart from the fact i have a Dinosaur Jr. cow face painted on the back of my jacket, so i couldn't stand in front of him, or turn my back to him. I also chatted to someone who i knew slightly and who claimed to know me, but neither of us could work out how or why. Turns out he's the bass player in Sebadoh! Luckily i hadn't said anything dumb. When my friend explained who he was, it all became clear... standing on the right at their last gig, yeah, now he looks familiar! Doh indeed. So Ruthie, it's Elliott/Quasi/Sebadoh tonight. I'll be there. It's Blondie tomorrow!!!!!!! and Mercury Rev on Thurs. Sat it's They might be giants (again - great conga last night at their show, no really, the audience did the conga!). Sunday it's Idlewild who are great. Feb is looking good, yes i did get confused so thanks for putting me straight. Madder Rose/Heather Nove/Muttonbirds + Grand Drive can all be done as they don't clash. Sorry for the lack of LP content, but just wait 'til March! It's good to see R has got straight into the "American girl in London" thing by getting drunk and having to enlist the help of an indie groover to get to bed. That's why us Brits are so hunky (er, are you sure - ed) because we're constantly having to carry inebriated yank girls home to safety. I'm too old for that now, but it's good to see the tradition continue. "and i wonder how i've come to know so much less than i knew before" ... Joseph Lee Henry. "i know the promise is so much better than the real thing" ... Liz's birthday is coming up right? Um....how about organizing a birthday book for her? I stole this idea from the Sheryl Crow mailing list. What it is is someone is in charge of collecting all of the letters (you mail them to this one person) and this person puts them all together into one book and delivers it to her. Well......does anyone knows where she lives? Huh? Orlando? Mickey Mouse? I remember that we were going to do some card for her some time ago, but I see it didn't work out? Blah >blah blah.... we knew that already! I have a good feeling that a track from Liz will appear on at least one of the CDs. Liz was a main stage performer and played about one-third of the dates, so it seems pretty likely that she will be included. The only other artists who played more dates than Liz were Natalie Merchant and Sarah McLachlan, I believe. >Hopefully sarah's management will be smart enough to include some of the other >acts like liz... and maybe, just maybe we will get liz on the "jams and >collaborations" cd. Liz may just appear on this disc. At the Buffalo Lilith date, Sarah McLachlan and N'Dea Davenport joined her for "Divorce Song," and I believe others performed this song with her in other cities as well. Also, I remember reading show reviews from list members of other shows on the tour, where Liz performed with other artists during their sets. I must say, though, "Divorce Song" didn't come off too well at the Buffalo Lilith show. It didn't seem all that well-rehearsed, which does make sense if a lot of these collaborations were fairly spontaneous, but there's a very specific flow to that song in terms of the way the vocals are phrased, and Sarah and N'Dea seemed a little off, timing-wise. I'm not saying this to be picky, but "Divorce Song" is one of my favorites, so that really stood out to me. Also, the Lilith audience was rather unattentive during Liz's set (it seemed like Steve Kisko, Fran and one of his friends, and myself were the only Liz fans there that day), and after each song, there would be polite applause but not much else. Like, Liz wasn't good enough for them? Meanwhile, as soon as Sarah came out and joined Liz on stage, the place went nuts, people were on their feet and cheering loudly. That just really bugged me. Not only was it hard to hear the song over the sudden noise, but these people couldn't have given a damn about Liz's set until Sarah came on -- how do you think that makes Liz feel up on there on stage? I really don't mean to knock anyone, but as happy as I was to see Liz for the first time that day, the audience's reaction to Liz was a little off-putting and made me wish I could have seen her under better circumstances, which I did two months later. I won't even get into the number of disrespectful people around me who talked through her set and were extremely distracting... But anyway, Jase Now Playing: Jen Trynin, _Cockamamie_ (The 'Now Playing' thing is something I really like that I've borrowed from the Joni Mitchell list -- I'm always curious as to what music other people are listening to.) ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V2 #19 ***********************************
