Subject: ken told me to do it. Hi I hate to post (you wouldn't know it by the frequency at which I do it), but I just remembered something I always want to post about, and I might forget if i don't post RIGHT NOW. I know Liz didn't write it,b ut she sang it, so it's related. Anyway... you know the banana splits song, right? Well... that part that goes "tra la la... tra lalalala... tra la la... lalalala." Doesn't it sound like this one Bob Marley song? That goes like "oy yoy yoy... oy yoy yoy yoy... oy yoy yoy oy yoy yoy yoy... " or something? Anyone? I mean, I don't listen to bob m. though. Do I look like some weed smokin' frat boy? Do I, punk? Or do I look like a rastafarian? Or do I look like an ignorant chick who is stereotyping people who listen to bob m? Hey... he's an allright guy, okay? I'm just trying to get out of this hole i dug, and it's not working. Anyway... Which came first? Out of curiousity. And a genuine thirst for knowledge. HAHAHAHAHA. That's why I hate college, right? YEAH!!! still trying to find mercury rev/add 'n to X tickets for thursday. for anyone who comes to london, time out should be your bible. my friend brian and i checked out this show they recommended last friday night, the webb brothers (they are american) and after queuing in the rain fro 2 hours, we got in and it was fucking amazing!! great great show. (oh, there was also the fact that i was so drunk my really cute indie rock boy brian had to tuck me into bed after taking care of me for like an hour... ;) ) had a fun birthday, with an absolutely amazing chocolate mousse cake from harrods (only the most pretentious department store in the whole world) and went clubbbing.. woohoo! techno dancing fun! hmm.. chipko.. i think i have already fallen into the indie rock "hole" as you call it (why the fuck is the damn quote sign on the number 2 key!).. but i was already and indie rock snob before i came here, so i guess its okay. i think xfm is on my alarm clock, but that's just because its the only station i could find that looks like it had potential.. i dont' actually listen to the radio.. i listen to the box of liz tapes or the 180 cds i brought with me and i had to narrow it down to that many if you have any more concert suggestions, let me konw.. oh, and from what you said about the feb. shows, nothing overlapped.. madder rose is the 4th, and heather nova the 5th (or they are switched) so i think you are all good. i obviously wont' be doing any cd shopping other than at the £1.50 market in soho, if thse were normal cd prices you quoted for jen trynin (who, i will once again plug, is fabulous ) HEY NICOLE!! where are you transfering. i hope all you #wcse people dont' miss me too much (hey! i found the pound key!) hey KB, i got the pics before i left, and they are currently decorating my wall :) drop me a line. still no news on european liz dates :( she better get her ass over here ( and hopefully not in april, or that will really fuck up my travel plans ) oh, and you all aren't allowed to have liz camp til i get back in early june! so just accept it and deal :) (:ruthie:) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 12:44:19 -0500 From: "Schotz, Gary" Subject: More from the Mp3 debate All of what Jason said is true, however the fact that Mp3, while still realatively new and underground, is already making this kind of impact, only shows that record company execs or artists need to embrace the technology, instead of fighting to squelch it. True, the opportunity for illegal pirating Mp3 files is immense, but it is already going that way and policing it is not the answer. Just like people didn't stop buying albums when they got tape recorders, people will not stop buying CD's with the proliferation of Mp3's. Fans of artists will still want the packaging and information that comes with a CD and not everyone can make the purchase of a CD burner cost effective to transfer Mp3 files on a CD. While people like you who are rightfully concerned with artists being dropped and lables going out of business are hoping Mp3's don't destroy the music business as we know it, maybe that's what the industry needs. Unfortunately, your pleas for people to download only those songs that cannot be purchased, will largely go unheeded. Similarly, any legal action record companies attempt to crush Mp3 technology will be incredulously difficult to police. As long as there is the technology to put this stuff out there, there will always be technology to prevent, or at least hinder its illegal reproduction. If the record biz can embrace the technology, the opportunity for up and coming or deserving bands to get more exposure will be there without anyone losing out on the financial end. As far as record companies not making money from artists who are not Celine Dion or Garth Brooks, you'd be surprised just how much money they make from critically acclaimed artists with no commercial success. More often than not, it's the artists who suffers and is forced to tour almost continuously to maintain their lifestyle. There is an email floating out there allegedly from Steve Albini about how bands get screwed by the music industry on a regular basis. If I can locate it I will post it. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 11:21:11 -0800 (PST) From: Craig King Subject: Profiles and Scooby Well, about 10 people email me with the profiles, and I have them all up on my page at http://phairterritory.freeservers.com. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go to my site and click on SSD Profiles and it tells everything there. Well, I'm off to watch the 3 episodes of Scooby Doo I taped today from the Cartoon Network. God I love that show! Always have and always will! Zoinks! What we lose is being able so shout "sarah, I luv you", in a >theatre full of 500 people and have her look right at me, and smile and say >"oh, thats so sweet, thank you". What have we gained?? Bryan, I first bought Fumbling, and since then have become a die hard fan. I saw sarah last year in los angeles, and it was the most amazing concert, it was obvious that sarah loves performing, and even though we were in a big ampitheater, the atmosphere was intimate, close, sarah was talking with audience members, it was an amazing time - she even played vox for the encore..... I am a big paul westerberg fan, and I feel good that he is not a huge draw, I feel like I've found something unique, that only a few know about - I feel the same way about liz, whom I've loved since eig..... yes, sarah is on vh1, she is on opo soundtracks, she is popular, but why not? she is amazing, few in there right mind wouldn't love her music... so I understand your reminiscing, your sadness. I don't see Liz becoming that popular, but hey, anything's possible. rob ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 12:19:56 PST From: "Robert Hart" Subject: top seven/jewel I know this is a little late but I wanted to put in my top seven: 1)rem - up This was a great comeback considering all that happened with Bill Berry. I love the new sound, tracks like daysleeper and parakeet really sparkle. 2)liz phair - wcse The first time I played this disc, I listened to it for 8 hours straight on a roadtrip from newport, RI to washington DC. I don't need to tell you all whay its so good 3)belle and sebastian - the boy with the arab strap Does anyone else like this group? this album is awash with emotion that seeps around the folk/rock arrangements 4)smashing pumkins - adore 5)bjork - homogenic 6)pj harvey - this is desire 7)beastie boys - hello nasty now jewel seems to have enraged some of you - whoever tried to compare the two should be shot. I enjoy a few of her songs but lyrics like: "if I could tell the world just one thing, it'd be that we're all OK" are a weeeee bit trite and simple, her images she brings up are overdone, like "fragile flame." I did buy the album, I admit, but I was dissapointed. She shines every once in an album, but her music is usually too feel-good poppy for me. Subject: this mailing list is aptly titled (for me) So I had this dream last night, right? I was in some sort of art class, and we were drawing this still life. It consisted of... none other but... a table with spaceeggs in a kind of circle. They were spaceeggs. Specifically. they looked like normal eggs, but they were called spaceeggs. Anyway, so we were to draw this still life, then in the middle of it, at another time, draw a self portrait. I was talking to katie (spaceeggy) earlier today online, and it's like I told her, I think she's getting to me. First I dream about twizzlers, then i dream about spaceeggs. Help? On another note, and I can't remember if I've mentioned this on the list before, but I finally played this X-Files pinball game! It ROCKED so hard. If it would have been small enough, i would have taken it home with me, I swear. It was so fun! Greatest damned pinball machine! and to top it all off, you know how modern pinball machines have this "match" thing they do on that little screen when the game is over? Well, I got a match twice in a row so I got to play two extra games for free! Then, apparently the little kid on the pinball machine next to me had gotten a match or smething, cuz there was a credit left in the machine but he was long gone, so I got to play that one. it was space jam. Didn't AT ALL measure up to x files using the metric system or the american one, but I'm a pinball freak,a nd i never get to play, so this was super cool! Yeah. You know, I'm glad I don't live by the philosophy of that damned baseball movie: if you build it, they will come. My website is just... slow. I admit, it's not the best piece of shit i've ever seen, but i put alot of work into it! Visit! sign my guestbook! acknowledge your damned selves! I konw that there's almost 900 of you out there. And maybe all of yall hae already visited, but i don't know. If not, do. just to humor me. thanks. - -Nicole I Spy a May Queen http://www.angelfire.com/ca/DontWalk ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 23:09:30 -0800 From: melodious19@juno.com (Alice Springs) Subject: Liz Phest, X-Files Hello... Thank you to Cindy and Jorge for filling me in with the details of the upcoming Liz Phest. I would love to meet other Liz phans, but cannot afford to travel the distance! Email me privately if any of you Californians would be interested. (C'mon, you know you want to!!) I forgot to watch "X-Files!" I cannot believe it. I was at a friend's house watching "the Truman Show" and I completely forgot about my favorite show! (How could this have happened??) So, I guess I missed a great episode? Would anyone like to fill me in? It appears that no one in my family taped it for me...
