Oh well..... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 04:44:10 EST From: "Alisha Heidbrink" Subject: Ramble, Ramble... Hey all, I hope you are all enjoying the snow. It snowed all day again all day today in Ann Arbor. Speaking of Ann Arbor, Nicole, University of Michigan is awesome! I am a sophomore here and I couldn't be happier. I recommend coming here. I have an awesome job as a waitress, the people are really great also. No matter who you are, you kind find your niche. There are a lot of pretty rich people, girls in big shoes, black pants and little sweaters (my little sister actually asked if they all had to wear the same outfits to be in a sorority), but it is a blast. I would recommend getting a job when you get here b/c you meet tons of people. Ann Arbor is also close enough to detroit to offer "big city life." and there are smaller schools like eastern and a comm. college down the road so there is a diverse crowd. it's great. If you have any questions, email me. Ok, now for some more unliz-related data. I heard the scooby doo thing like this. Fred and Daphne always sneak off together...odd dont' you think. why don't they let anyone come with them? The van is always over flowing with smoke b/c they are always smoking pot in the back. At least shaggy and scooby are, that is why the two of them are constantly on the search for food. I have also heard something about scooby snacks being some kind of acid or other drug and that is why they freak out so much to get them and after they get them. I think there was more, but it was also all sex/drug related. I still am drooling for any liz recordings not on the market. Does anyone know of any places to buy anything in the ann arbor area? Or even in kalamazoo? Or, would any kind soul be willing to make me a copy of the girlysounds, phairities, etc? I would be forever indebted... Take care everyone and have a great weekend!!! Does any one know if Liz has ever been nominated for any of music awards? Like Grammy, AMA, Billboard, MTV, etc.? Do you know for what song(s)? I read an interview where Liz mentions how much fun she had at the Grammy's, but was she there 'cause she was nominated? Just curious! Thanks! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 10:03:21 -0800 From: "fisher" Subject: Juliana, Camp Phair and PJH Sorry to further an off-topic thread, but... Juliana Hatfield's BED? Definitely my favorite album of the year. I've been a huge fan of hers for years, she's my absolute favorite musician. I would not call her music ear-candy at _all_; however, it's not for everyone. I think in terms of what people have been saying about BED being empty sounding- there are a lot of reasons for this. It was intentionally spare. There are no effects, no reverb, no compression, no digital processing- just instruments. Plus, it was Juliana's first time producing her own album and she had no record company support, so it was recorded really fast (in under a week). There are some amazing songs on that album and the tour was the best I've ever seen her. Damn, I feel like I'm doing some shameless promotion, but I probably am, so that's okay... Camp Phair- I live in Ontario but if this event takes place at a feasible time, my friend Kelly and I are going to try to drive to Chicago for it. What needs to be done to make this real rather than a pipe-dream? I'll help in any way I can, which is probably not much... I was referring to Nicole's (I think) story of her listening to Girlysounds in the car and her mom thought it was a friend of hers cuz the quality isn't that great. Well, as I said, someone in my carpool thought it was my best friend when he heard it cuz he knows my best friend plays the guitar. Now about this Lizfest. Let's get something going if we're actually gonna do it! First, who is going to be in the committee to help plan this thing? I'd really like to go, so let's get things down in stone! KaTiE ():D P.S. for some reason, everytime I sing Liz at work, everyone assumes that I'm on drugs or something. Arrgh! I mean, did you ever see Velma apart from those two? She could have had Shaggy, but instead she chose to be the constant third wheel; she must have been getting something out of it, and Fred must have been too. Oh, and as for Scrappy: yes, he did irreparable damage to the whole concept of the show, but consider two things. One, weren't you a little tired by that time of seeing the SAME EXACT SHOW every week with a different poorly-disguised villian? And two, the little guy was so damn cute! Or how 'bout that Mick Jagger? I've always thought she was an ugly woman, especially to have gotten so famous. She's definitely no Carson Daly. As for Jen T., it's very sad. Alt rock has had its day for now. Blame: a) drugs, for killing/breaking up/otherwise distracting the genre's biggest acts b) Some of the bigger, more acclaimed acts like Liz and NIN for dropping the ball and not releasing anything for years upon years c) Beck and all his imitators for turning alt-rock radio playlists into a 24-hour Dr. Demento program I'm not sad to see its demise in the form it was in. Anyway, just to say, 'cos i forgot, that WCSE was named as the 4th best album of the year by the Gideon Coe show on Greater London Radio a few weeks back, even though the record isn't out in the UK yet. These are the guys who bought the record on import 'cos they're big fans. They played "polyester bride" to commemorate the fact. Last week they played "headache" and tipped Liz for one to watch in '99. This week they played "turning japanese", but didn't elaborate. For those in the London area, the show is on 2-6pm on Saturdays and they keep saying Liz will be on the show when she comes to the UK, but they admit it's a rumour that they started! Hell, with all the royalties she should have enough for a flight to the UK. If i had a car i'd offer to meet her at the airport. Any Madonna fans???? Have you heard her duet with, brother-in-law, Joe Henry "guilty by association"?? It's awesome. The best thing she's done since "holiday". Two posts in a day, i should find some work to do!
