One is the "perfect world" in which she is involved with the guy and she is cool tall vulnerable and luscious In the other, she is a mess, she cant even "navigate the guys backyard. she is leading this double life. People think that she is in the perfect world, but she knows that she is in the other one where "home is very ordinary". But she tries to keep up the act that she belongs in the perfect world, but she is really scared that she will open up her mouth and say something that will cause her to fall in the eyes of others (like Lucifer), and let them know that she is only pretending to belong to the perfect world, when really she belongs to the other one. welll I hope this makes sense, I am like half asleep, but I had to write this while I was thinking of it ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jenny "I'll have just one more cigarette before I get myself to bed" - Jen Trynin- http://www.liz-phair.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 02:44:14 -0500 From: Isha Leigh Subject: I think you're all nuts Every one of you.. So I guess I'll see you all in chicago (mumbles, stares at shoes.. shifts from one foot to the other) Sessions was such an excitement for me, even if it was strange. I love to see liz on TV. You can tape it and rewind and watch little bits again and it's so convenient. Anyway, the white background does not need to return. I think it should stay in it's cheezy 80's video coffin. David Byrne is weird. Why does a full grown man choose to wear a camouflage jumpsuit? His accent just made it even more silly. Whatever, it's his body. Speaking of clothes, I have to say I love Liz's shoes, every pair I've seen. I think they were uncomfortable and that's the main reason she kicked them off... did she say "the cool shoes" to the drummer? The cool shoes are always the least comfortable. Liz looks - I prefer the short blond hair look. It fits her eyes and face better. It's also a little more mature looking. I guess it's only fair to have it in the middle of the country and Chicago is logical. I still think we should wait to see what the Lilith situation is before we set dates. Please email me -- I tried emailing you and it didn't work so I have to do this publicly, sorry. Anyway, e-mail me immediately, please. The book "by" Liz Phair that Katie found called 'Whip-Smart' is the fucking Hal Leonard songbook. It's got fairly accurate tabs for the album and horrendous lyrics - Liz never bothered to OK them. There's a hilarious little bit about that whole situation at the tail end of the Illinois Entertainer article, which Ken has on his site. John P. Phair, author of another, altogether different book is Liz's dad. That's his name, anyway. What is the book, anyway? I'm genuinely intrigued. Liz not playing guitar on "Mesmerizing" sucks because it is POINTLESS. She could easily play guitar & sing at the same time on that song. Buddy (or any other guitarist -- think: Casey Rice, in the past) is *not* needed on that song up until the chorus, where the lead guitar comes in. That's why it sucks, because heaven forbid Buddy would ever have to stand there and look stupid not doing anything while Liz played guitar on "Mesmerizing." I am thinking that's the reasoning behind it. God, Liz looks way more awkward standing there not playing guitar than Buddy would. I can see why he'd play guitar for her on "Dance of the 7 Veils," though. That's a hard enough song to sing, and since the vocal is integral, it would be kind of hard (for Liz) to play guitar and emote vocally as necessary at the same time. This isn't meant as a slam against Buddy -- he's a really nice guy and has great taste in musicians and he talked to us after the Toronto show in October. I think he's supercool, but the reasoning behind the no-guitar-for-Liz-on-Mesmerzing is not. Dallas listmembers, you know who you are, and so do we. Don't be afraid. I went away for a few days and didn't check my email at all during that time. Right now, I'm reading new messages more or less as they come in, while trying to work through all of the ones that accumulated while I was out of town. Katie, I'm glad you like the 'Phairities' tape. I now have much higher quality versions of many of those songs, so I'd like to recompile the tape at some point and do another tree to redistribute it. That will likely be quite far off in the future, though. First we'll be treeing the three Chicago shows and the tapes that Ken purchased. The PBS station that we get here (WNED, out of Buffalo) doesn't seem to be airing 'Sessions at West 54th,' so if there is someone out there who wouldn't mind making me a copy of the show, I'd greatly appreciate it. Since I didn't get to see it this week, I compensated for it by forcing the friends I was staying with to sit through some of Liz's videos and TV appearances I have on tape, then making them listen to most of _Exile in Guyville_ and _whitechocolatespaceegg_. It's too soon to call it a successful conversion, but they did seem to think that Liz was "really cool." Also, I finally got around to buying a copy of Stealing Beauty on video, after spotting it on sale at a Blockbuster on Saturday. For all those who may not be aware, the video for Liz's "Rocket Boy" is on the very end of the tape, after the movie is over. I taped the video off MuchMusic back when they first played it, but it's nice to have a higher quality copy of it now. The movie itself is a lot better than I had expected as well, after having read some reviews of it on the list in the past. I've noticed a few posts about a Liz camp this summer and I have to say that I'm all for the idea. I don't know what all would need to be undertaken in order to organize it, but I'll gladly help out in any way I can. I think it would be a lot of fun, and I'd love to meet more people from this list. Let's work to make this happen. As for the location, Chicago is definitely the obvious choice. And I know I do this a lot, but for those who have purchased other albums after I've recommended them and have enjoyed them (Jen Trynin, Amy Rigby, Aimee Mann, Sleater-Kinney, etc.), try to check out the Loud Family's _Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things_. I'd been searching for this album for quite some time, based on a lot of praise I'd heard/read for it (including some from Aimee Mann in interviews), and I finally managed to find a copy of it on Sunday. I listened to the CD for the first time on the bus ride from Toronto back to Collingwood that night and I was completely floored by it. It's rare for me to have such an intense initial reaction to an album, but this one joined my Top 10 of all-time list before that first listen was over, and I haven't stopped playing it since. A few of the tracks are more fragments than actual songs (not really Guided By Voices-esque though, if that's what you're thinking), but both the melodies and lyrics are incredible throughout, and the arrangements are pretty creative. Anyway, the album may be a little hard to find, but trust me when I say it's worth searching for. If worse comes to worst, you can always try to order it through one of the online CD retailers. Anyway, I hope everyone had a good New Year's (or at least can remember theirs; several details of my own are somewhat sketchy at best) -- best wishes to all! Cheers, Jase P.S.
