(put it this way, I don't even fully understand what getting bounced means, but here goes) Somebody asked about New Trier (liz's high school) and I can actually give some info on that if ya'll are interested. (if i repeat stuff you guys know, i apologize in advance) I sorta know what New Trier was like b/c I went to Evanston at the same time, which is the rival high school and very close by. It may sound corny but these schools really were a lot like the ones in Breakfast Club/Ferris Beuller (?). New Trier at that time at least was very very white and very preppy (except for the trust fund kids who followed the "dead" b/c they didn't actually have to work). Liz describes her background as upper middle class which i'm sure it was b/c i'll believe anything she says, but let me tell you that New Trier kids by and large were really, really, really rich. that was not an upper middle class neighborhood, it was upper upper upper class for the most part. it was a really good school academically with pretty strong sports, about 2k students i think, and supposedly the highest suicide rate in the country for a while!! The theory was that these kids looked around and realized that they'd never have the kind of money that their parents did, plus they combined that pressure with their super high pressured parents who would freak if they didn't go to princeton or something, and they lost it. other New Trier trivia includes the fact that the dance scenes from 16 candles were filmed at new trier west (or east i can't ever remember) which was closed at the time since they had all the kids go to one school which they called new trier east (or west). i went to high school with people who went to college with liz and from what i understand she was the kind of person who was just clearly "cooler" than most people, but she just did her own thing. this post is getting way too long so i'll leave my top three liz songs for next time. I've been searching hi and low for Liz live CDs, and I've noticed that Tunnel Records out in Miami will order them from overseas for one. Anyone know of any place else to get them? Also, I'm hoping the Bliss and Fetish people are still alive, coz I'm RABID to get a copy of Girlysounds on CD. I personally thought the mixes on the shelved demos were in some cases better than the mixes on WCSE, most notably on RIDE. (And I didn't like the irish-pub version of Shitloads of Money.) Heck, I know I tend to like Artists earlier in thier career. (Note my Tyrannosaurus Rex page in my .sig) Speaking of Early Liz, I've run across another artist on Matador who reminds me (in ways) of the Girlysound recordings. Yep, Cat Power. (Cat Power is the band name, but it's really Chan Marshall... much the way NiN is really Trent Resnor.) If y'all haven't gone over to Matador's site and taken a listen, you should... there's an honesty to her music, though her voice might provoke a love it or hate it response. @>--`-,----------'--,----------^--- catblack@casfs.org ---'---,--^--<@ Catblack the wizard's back- Daubed in doom in his tongue tombed room We of the wind must rejoice and speak ---'---,--^--<@ @>--,--`-- And kiss all our starbrowed brothers on the cheek. http://www.eigi.com/catblack/index.html ---'---,--^--<@ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Dec 1998 12:15:34 EST From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: re: #132 and a confession from me Moe - About the F-16 worshipping my friend spoke of, she was admiring how powerful the machine is I think. Josh - I love your new (or should I say resurrected) thread idea: <> I enjoy doing this, and always enjoy reading other people's interpretations. I'll contribute another analysis soon. (But I'm not going to tackle May Queen - not yet, anyway!) The album with "Jack and Diane" is called American Fool, and I think he was still going by John Cougar at that point. Oh, the high school memories I have of that song... "dribble off those Bobbie Brooks slacks and do what I please...!" Sorry, I'm no help in your decision between "Every Hollow Has Its Favorite Sound" and "alllizphairinloveandtrade" for your Liz trading page. I love both names - very creative and apropos. Since Josh mentioned that Classic Queen was his first CD, I'm wondering how many of us are Queen fans (and I mean for reasons *other* than Wayne's World)? Have you seen the VH1 Behind the Music show on Queen? One of the saddest things I've ever seen in my life is that last video Freddie Mercury did - he was so sick, looked so awful, but kept persevering... he was in such denial. Bit of meaningless trivia: I just realized the other night that one of my boyfriend's guitar picks has the Morcheeba "Big Calm" (whoops, I almost typed that "clam") logo on it. Neat! I don't know where he got it. Though it's probably available everywhere. Jorge: Your account of seeing Blondie live was GREAT! Indelible imagery, just as fresh as when you saw it 19 years ago. But I'm a little confused - at 18 you "had never even seen a girl up close" - ? Were you raised by monks? By wolves? Poor thing, I hope you've recovered. ;^) Your Jesus/Devil item had me *convulsed* with laughter. My co-workers think I'm beyond hope. BTW, I'm a big Kinks fan! Seen 'em 3x in concert. I think they've been consistently underrated over the years. Nothin' like fraternal bickering to keep things hoppin'! I need to look at my ticket stubs to figure out the sexiest performer I've seen in concert - no one's coming to mind right now. Except maybe Nova Menco, the "gazebo" (2nd-stage) band at this year's Jazz Fest in Saratoga. 5 brothers, from somewhere in South America, I think. Between their exotic dark features, long black hair, tight pants (foreigners wear them SO much better than Americans), and amazing jazz/flamenco hybrid music, they literally whipped the crowd into a frenzy! *Everyone* leapt to their feet way before the end of their set, dancing, clapping, cheering. And everyone stormed the stage after the set to buy their CDs. Have any of you ever heard of them? Have a safe and happy New Year, everybody!
